Are two dead bodies the result of a fateful tryst or something even more sinister?
When a woman is found drowned in her workplace after a flood, and a man shot dead near her, the police have an obvious line of inquiry.
Given she was meant to be on a night out with girlfriends, but was rather galivanting with another man, fingers quickly point at a jealous husband.
But not all is as it seems. When the woman’s life is explored, it is discovered that she was involved in illicit activity with her brother, who is now nowhere to be found.
With the police clutching at straws, once again investigative reporter Stacey Logan begins to uncover the truth about the case. But led on by a maverick ex-cop with a death wish, Logan could well end up in serious danger herself.
Yet another gripping mystery for Stacey Logan, with lots of twists and turns along the way!! Fantastic read once again in this series from Nicola Clifford! I couldn't put it down!!
An enthralling read - and the last couple of chapters are real page-turners… Same group of characters as normal - they feel like family! I really enjoyed this book.
RIVER OF BODIES by Nicola Clifford. This is the latest in a long line of great Welsh local crime stories by Nicola Clifford, featuring many of the characters we have all come to love since book one and the books following on from that. Once again Ms Clifford comes up with a gripping storyline, with several police cases being solved at the same time. And as usual she keeps you waiting till near the end to bring all the threads together and tie up the loose ends! There's also an unexpected and rather shattering event in the latter half of the book.....no spoilers - you're just gonna have to read it for yourself! As I've said before, it's not necessary to start reading this series of books from book one, but I would still recommend it, as each book often refers to previous events/cases/characters in the series, so reading from book one often gives the reader a slightly better understanding of why certain people act a certain way, and how their past history can impact on the present tale one is reading. Great stuff - an excellent read, as always - and now I can't wait for book nine (hopefully!) Keep writing Ms Clifford - we want more please!
I always look forward to reading Nicola Clifford's books. I initially started reading them because they are set in Wales but have developed a real taste for the characters and plots. Without exception, the mysteries are always clever and believable. I love the characters, especially Stacey Logan who is a local photojournalist, and her partner DCI Ben James. Stacey is a local reporter who gets it about balancing the need to uncover the truth with being a decent human being. DCI James is relatable as a disciplined cop who is smart in ways that make him effective. I also like Heidi who does things I would love to do but never would do.
River of Bodies starts off as a murder mystery that at first glance could have adultery as a motive. As the story develops we see that one of the murdered people was involved in investing other people's money. More deaths happen when some desperate refugees are found locked into a truck, with not all surviving. There are other plot lines and they all come together in a most satisfying fashion.
What keeps Clifford's books fresh is the way contemporary issues are key parts of the plot. It gives them soul and why I will always read her books with great relish.
Having read all of Nicola Clifford previous books I was delighted to receive this arc through net galley and the publishers.
Set in my local area of mid wales I can recognise so many of the places mentioned. We catch up with Stacey and Ben again as Ben tries to solve a couple of murders and Stacey as a journalist does her own sleuthing. Along with jack, Heidi and Erica it is like catching up with old friends.
I really enjoyed this latest instalment and raced through it eager to find out who had done it and why. I will be looking forward to any more books Nicola Clifford writes.
wow what a reveal. Maybe a little to quick and not enough in-depth bu surprising never less
The book tackles the subject of human trafficking and does it well Thee descriptions of conditions at the refugee camps and the mode of transportation once they reach their host country is heart breaking A book that twinges your conscious and awakens your ire
I like crime books that make you think as well as entertain, and this doesn't disappoint. In RIVER OF BODIES Clifford shines a light on immigration and people trafficking and shows human compassion and solidarity triumph over self-interest and hate.
As you read this book, you will be impressed with this group of characters, especially Fliss. Talented writer,.good story line, MS Clifford has a well researched, gripping tale for you.
Can Ms Clifford's series of books get any better? Another great page-turner that was hard to put down (well one has to sleep sometime!) More great plots, more red herrings, and more things to keep the reader guessing. I think I've said it all before in my previous reviews (so read them if you want to see how highly I've praised this brilliant Welsh crime writer in the past!) Another cracker!
This book was a real joy to read with its compelling characters and a storyline that moves from rural Wales to cities. It's completely up to date with even a reference to the King. The descriptions of rural setting, murder, people smuggling, migrants and the homeless are all brought together seamlessly in this extremely well written book. I was familiar with some of the characters as I had read the first book in the series a while ago, but hadn't realised there were others in the series until I came across this. Not to be missed.
