Charley has always known that she's different - ever since she was small, strange things have happened around her - but it isn't until she meets high school heartthrob and the most popular kid in school, Aiden Cunningham, that she finally realises she isn't alone. Charley Chambers is magic. As Aiden begins to show Charley her full potential, she strikes up a friendship with the new kid, Marcus Gillespie. Marcus is dark, handsome and incredibly charismatic, but there is something odd about him, and Charley soon begins to realise that there might be more to him than meets the eye. Charley must learn who she can trust and who is out to deceive her. She knows one thing for certain, though. She will do absolutely anything to protect the people she cares about, even if it means destroying others in the process.

With the popularity of this genre it's hard for a new writer to shine, but Charley Chambers does shine, with a delightfully fresh and original story. It was exciting enough to cost me a whole afternoon when I should have been working, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

If I had a criticism, it was that the story was so dense, so tightly packed, and could perhaps have benefited from a little comic relief, but on further examination I noted it was almost 100,000 words; hugely long for the genre. It's a credit to the author that I didn't notice how long it was while I was reading it! A very creditable work from an emerging author.

The synopsis does NOT do it justice!!

This is really a book for young adults. However, as I consider myself a young adult at heart (if not in body), I enjoy reading this genre of books.

After the first couple of chapters, I did think "oh no, not another "Twilight". I could not have been more wrong. This story is SO much more than that!

Without wishing to add spoilers, very early in the book, the central character, Charley, discovers she has the ability to perform magic. Her journey thereafter is one of angst, anger, chaos, best friends, a touch of romance, a smidgin' of jealousy, troublesome siblings, overpowering parents, danger... I could go on, but again... no spoilers.

Suffice to say, this is definitely a page turner and I, for one, cannot WAIT for the next instalment.

Brilliant book, an absolute page turner. A story full of interesting characters, a strong plot and a great twist that I did not see coming. A novel that will make you laugh AND cry, I recommend this to anyone that likes fantasy, a touch of romance and a good old adventure.
