They call me an abomination. A mutant. A curse on their kind.
I don’t let it bother me. Much.
My name is Holly James, and what they say is true. I’m a freak of nature—a null. My mere presence zaps the magic from Others, rendering them powerless. That’s why they hate me. But here’s the kicker: I’ve found a way to profit from my lack of mojo.
Whether it’s acting as a mystical wet blanket in a dispute between pyromancers or keeping hormonal shifters from changing during a sweet sixteen party, I provide a highly specialized service. For a hefty fee.
When a young witch turns up dead, clutching an amulet cursed with black magic, my estranged grandfather asks for my help. In return for nullifying the necklace, Gramps promises to find my missing mother—a witch who vanished after my birth. Of course there’s a catch. He wants me to assist Cade McAllister, the arrogant sorcerer in charge of investigating the case.
Cade resents my existence, let alone my attempts to help. Still, I’ll do whatever it takes to find my mom. For my own peace of mind I have to know what happened to her, and I won’t allow anything to get in my way. Not even this crazy, irrational longing I feel for a hot sorcerer with the sexiest scowl I’ve ever seen.
Terri L. Austin is a new to me author. I was not sure what to expect or what was in store for me. I picked up Dispelled; because the blurb very much caught my eye. I’ve never heard or read a book with a character that cancels out everything around them. She is a freak of nature an abomination to the magical and shifter community, at least in their eyes. To say she is not liked, is an understatement.
Holly, is one tough women. I felt so much for her. We learn about her family - a few surprises in this area, what it means to be a null - not good, and feel the loneliness she goes through. It’s hard for her to accept that maybe, just maybe she can have more.
Cade her love interest was arrogant, broody, and mysterious, but in a fun way. The banter and sexual tension is strong between them. I like that in the end he doesn't’ walk away and wants to build something with Holly. I’m curious to see how this budding romance will develop.
The secondary characters we meet along the way are all interesting and unique in their own way. I like her assistant / friend and of course she pisses off a few magical creatures who in the end may or may-not be allies in the future.
I was blown away, sucked in, and taken on a magical mystery. I loved all the characters and I loved the mystery. I had no idea who was helping and who was doing what until everything was revealed. Your mind keeps turn along with Holly who wants to solve this mystery not for herself, but for those that lost their life and closer on another issue. The mystery will suck you in.
The only thing I wish and this isn’t a complaint since it’s up to each author to decide, but I would have loved a dual-perspective. I desperately desperately want Cade’s perspective. I wanted/needed to know what that moody and broody man was thinking.
I am excited to see that this will be a series. I look forward to more Holly and Cade and the extended cast of characters. I had a mind-blowing and phenomenal time reading Dispelled.
Rated: 4.5 Stars

There were good moments. There were things I liked about it. But the main male character was kind of a douche. Get rid of him and the book gets an extra star. Rewrite the ending and it will probably get another star.
Not a particularly good book, a mashup of matebond romance (without a bond, just the senseless at first sight love) and a UF classic plot. The lack of strong elements really marred the story: bland characterization, bland world building, a lack of a tight plot mysterywise.
I've never read a book by Terri Austin so I wasn't sure what was in store for me with this one. From the blurb, I knew it was a paranormal romance (my favorite!) and that the hero was broody and mysterious (also my favorite). I'm so happy I took a chance on this (new to me) author. This was such an amazing read.
This novel tells the story of Holly James, a Null, or a non-magical person who zaps the magic from others in the paranormal community (including witches, vampires, werewolves and sorcerers), rendering them powerless just by being in close proximity to them. This ability makes her public enemy number one. She is partnered with an arrogant sorcerer, Cade McAllister, to solve the murder of two young witches who died under mysterious circumstances.
I absolutely LOVED this book. It was such a pleasant surprise. Holly was so down to earth, funny and snarky and Cade was everything I loved in a hero - broody, grouchy, arrogant, rude and kind of an a**hole (I know I know! Give me allll the mean boys. I love them! I can't help it.) He was absolutely so fantastic: protective, possessive, alpha and so caring when Holly got under his skin. A definite winner!
One thing I will say, (and this isn't even a complaint because it is up to each author whether or not they include it in their book), is that I wish this book had dual perspective/point-of-view. Badly. I needed Cade's perspective and actually missed it. At each chapter's end, I found myself hoping that the next chapter would open to his perspective. I NEEDED to know what that moody and grouchy man was thinking. I wanted in his head. What was his first impression of Holly? What did he think of her? Was he drawn to her as she was to him? He was SUCH a broody and sexy character that I wanted more from this man. Again, just a personal preference but I did feel that it took away from my enjoyment a little.
All in all, I'm super excited that the story will continue into a series. I look forward to more books with Holly and Cade and the extended cast of characters! And hello! I NEEDa Mick book! He is the perfect combination of being deliciously dark and sexy with a hint of heart! ~ Ratula, 4.5 Stars
I was not thrilled with this read, it didn't wrap me up in it's world.
Holly was just ok. At first I felt like we were being handed a strong, independent, feisty heroine. I believe this started and stopped at feisty, and this was only offered on occasion. Holly was very superficial in the beginning, and that offered an unnecessary distraction. When reading a story about a character that is NOT involved in fashion, I have no interest in what handbag she is taking with her to prove whatever point she believes a fashion designer handbag would prove. On top of her need to make a statement, I felt as though she cowered to Cade, like she was at his whim. Almost as if he had some sort of "hold" on her. This all would have made sense had she not been a null. He could have had some power over her to explain the sudden and over the top attraction to him. Even the tension between them seemed forced and rushed. They hate each other... why are they talking sex? It was as if there should have been some back story provided first, some history between the two characters. SOMETHING! I needed more, and I simply did not receive it.
I believe the concept for this book was very good, the idea of having a character that can nullify magic is fantastic! Werewolves that can't transition, vampires that can't bite, witches that can't cast spells, Shifters that can't shift. (The idea of having opossums as Shifters did make me chuckle.) I really enjoyed a lot of the options that this books offered. Auras and spelled objects, blood magic, and spell signatures. The possessiveness and protectiveness of vampires and werewolves! There were a lot of positives about this one, it just did not come together for me, and the characters were not likeable.
This book was totally "meh" to me. It is also yet another example of why names matter. I've known a few authors who really struggle over naming their characters. And, I frequently complain about names . . . When you start a series, you are getting to know people. Just like when you go to a party . . . we rarely remember the names of everyone we meet. When you write a book and toss names at us, they need to work in the context. And, we need to not confuse them with someone - or something - else. (We also need to be able to pronounce them and associate them with individual characters . . . but I digress . . . )
So. The dead girl's name is London. Every single time I read that name, I heard an accent in my head - had to re-read the sentence - because I kept seeing "city" not "person". Every single time. I realize this is petty - and I may be the only person on the planet that this affected this way - but it did. And, it diminished my enjoyment of the story. Sorry. But there it is.
Also. The leading male character enters the story a jerk. Straight up jerkiness. Uses threats of making the heroine enjoy sex to get her to tell him what he wants to know. (Seriously? Who writes this stuff?) But, he is such a jerk, why is sex even on the table? (Not literally on the table . . . ) He does lighten up as the story continues, but why do we have this sex nonsense so early on in the story - and the relationship?
The prologue of the story totally captured me. From there, I purchased it. Whole thing was turned upside down once the story actually started. VERY disappointing to me. I would definitely have loved to see more of the relationship between Sunny and Holly. I felt like the ball was dropped on that one.
In the end - probably 2.5 stars - which I'm making 3 - because it doesn't feel like a 2 star read to me.
This is the first book of Terri Austin's that I am reading, and I wasn't quite sure about what to expect.I had originally thought it would be a run-of-the-mill paranormal/urban fantasy book, but with a really unique main character. This book surpassed my expectations and really pulled me in. We usually come across vampires, werewolves, witches and fae, but a main character who cancels out other's magical powers and abilities is something we've never seen before!
Holly is a null as I mentioned above. She nullifies the magic around her and renders other magic users powerless. This has caused her to be feared and hated by Others since her birth. But she doesn't let it bother her.She has turned the very thing that sets her apart into an asset and she sells her services as a Null for a price as many situations require a Null. Her mom disappeared while she was young and she never knew her father. Her grandmom is the one who brought her up, sacrificing a lot.
One day, out of the blue, her estranged grandfather contacts her and requests her help in solving the murder of a young witch that involves really dangerous dark magic and in return he'll help her find her mom.The only thing is she will have to help the arrogant, rude and sexy-as-hell sorcerer Cade McAllister who is the investigator on the case. But he doesn't want her interference or help. Not one to let something like this stop her, Holly forges ahead in her investigation gaining new friends and many enemies.Add in the fact that the sexual tension between her and Cade could be cut with a knife, and the possibility that someone might be trying to kill her, Holly has one hell of a ride ahead!
I absolutely loved the world building and the characters in the novel!Holly was a kickass main character- sarcastic, witty, brave but prone to make mistakes due to impatience at times.Cade was really infuriating in the beginning but he grew on me.The chemistry between them was off the charts! And certain scenes were so hot and panty-melting!*fans self* The secondary characters like Mick,Sunny and many others were well fleshed out.The mystery and suspense was really compelling. It had me turning the pages impatiently to figure out what would happen!I was quite sad by the time I reached the end and I really hope the next book in the series comes out soon!I'm rooting for Holly and Cade, and even though their relationship between them is awesome there are a lot of practical challenges due to Holly's inherent nature and I would love to see how they overcome them! :)
I received an early ARC of Dispelled, the first in the A Null For Hire series. Dispelled blends the humor, suspense, and hot romance you expect from Terri L Austin's other books, but with the added fun of a paranormal/urban fantasy theme. Set in present-day Kansas and Oklahoma, Dispelled takes you on a fast-paced ride full of steamy romance and nail-biting suspense. Austin's built a gritty supernatural underworld filled with corrupt politicians, crime bosses, and sex clubs but with her typical humor and sass to keep the story from getting too dark. She'll keep you laughing, squealing, and sighing throughout!
Holly James is a null, she nullifies magic. Although she's detested by the magical creatures around her, they hire her when nullifying magic is necessary. When an unexpected visitor with a key to the disappearance of her mother turns up, she's coerced into helping Cade--a sexy bad-ass sorcerer detective--on a murder case where cursed objects are sent to young witches to kill them. Cade only wants Holly to nullify the cursed object so he can examine the murder scene, however, she's determined to assist him in every aspect of the investigation. Sparks fly, ignite, and smolder between the two. They find it hard to resist their attraction, but they're also oil and water in the magical world. As Holly and Cade dig deeper into the case, they're susceptible to the machinations of those in power, creating many unexpected twists in the growing murder case. They're also susceptible to falling in love, thanks to the machinations of Terri L. Austin.
An interesting world, magic users, vampires werewolves exist along with the protagonist who can nullify all their magic. Weres can't shift, Vampires are human around her and magic doesn't work when she is in the vicinity. The characters are pretty good, the MC Holly was a little annoying in the first half of the book with her obsession with hand bags but happily that seemed to diminish as the book went along. I'll read the next book in the series if the author releases one.
I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book I feel that way anytime I read a new author. Well this is one time that I was very pleasantly surprised! I absolutely fell in love with dispelled, what a fun, witty, and sexy book filled with action, mystery, subterfuge, love and all sorts of bad ass folks. In a world filled with humans and Others which are people with magic anything from sorcerers, witches, vampires, werewolves and probably more Holly is a smart, sexy spitfire that is different she is a Null. This means although human she nullifies all magic around her. Needless to say that makes her less than popular with the Others but that isn't to say that her unique talents aren't needed just the opposite she has a business that does quite well for just those situations. However when a grandfather she never knew existed makes her a deal that includes finding her long lost mother she can't resist even if it means helping to solve a murder case with cranky, controlling detective Cade McAllister that happens to be smoking hot and a powerful sorcerer. The sparks fly immediately as these two try to solve why two witches have been murdered and instead of answers only more questions are popping up, danger is never far behind and everyone has secrets they want to keep hidden. This really reminded me of classic the who done its, with magic thrown in. Very fun and well written I loved all the banter between Holly and Cade and while Cade constantly tried to keep Holly safe and tell her what to do ( meaning tell her to stay home) she had no qualms about getting out there and investigating on her own even if she is a wee bit head strong her intentions are good. The immediate connections these two have is combustible wow, not over the top or unbelievable but holy smokes whew. All the secondary characters were amazing and a blast to meet. HEA is included plus room for more books cliffhanger free but open. I can't wait to read the next one!!
Holly James, a null in the magic world, is a strong, tenacious woman who has turned her lack of magic and the fact that she renders the magic of others useless into a viable job. When a young witch is found dead from a cursed amulet, Holly is approached by a grandfather she didn't know she had to help solve the mystery. Holly must work with sexy, controlling Cade, the investigator in charge and sparks fly! Danger, intrigue and secrets abound and it seems as if more questions are popping up than answers. I loved the chemistry between Holly and Cade. Neither want to be attracted to each other and both have secrets they are keeping which just adds to the tension between the two characters. The story is interesting, the pace is quick and it was hard to put down when I had to go participate in "real life." This was a fresh take on a paranormal genre and I am definitely looking forward to the second in the series.
I wanted to like this book, but I made it 2/3 of the way before I had to stop. The beginning starts off well enough. The character has a very unique magical ability that makes her cancel out all other magical abilities. Because of this everyone hates her. I've read books with similar concepts before but in this one everyone really hates her, and that's all we hear about in the book. The repition makes this a difficult read. The love interest in the book constantly acts annoyed with her, but the main character still likes him! Halfway through the book after a few romps in bed she decides she's falling in love, yet we have yet to see the love interest do anything remotely truly romantic. We constantly see a repeated cycle of her investigating the murder by talking to people who hate her, or are glaring at her. It becomes very tedious to read. I was not a fan of the book. Great concept, poor execution.
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 3 Narration 3 Story 3
Intrigued by the description of a heroine that is a Null – she nullifies the powers of the paranormals around her, I was curious to see just how the story would unfold. Holly was born into a magical family, but is different from everyone else: she draws the power away from others- which, now that she’s older has worked into quite the lucrative business. But, it’s still very lonely as people used to using their power (whatever it may be) at will, she is a bit of a damper. But then, a young witch is found dead, clutching an amulet that is cursed. Black magic is to be avoided by all, but Holly’s unique abilities allow her to drain the magic, and render it harmless, on a request from her grandfather. But – he’s got conditions: there is a need to find a murderer, and there is a sorcerer on the case who can use Holly’s skills and talents – even if he won’t admit it.
Cade is one of those arrogant, handsome and talented men, who uses his fear of Holly’s strange abilities to take control (even though he won’t admit it at first) and it turns him into possibly the most despicable romantic interest ever created. And – the fact that Holly is drawn to him, despite his lack of (early on) redeemable features. They do have chemistry though, and the trope that is almost unstated is the fated mates bit: as the two are meant to be together….. once Cade develops some cracks in his tough guy façade, he does get a bit more likable, and the sexual tension between them is off the charts for a new introduction.
Narration for this book is provided by Hollie Jackson, and I’ve experienced her before with young-ish heroines. Her voice works naturally to capture the new-adult aged voice of Holly, and she does make some adjustments to differentiate characters in tone and pacing. But, what I discovered in this read, there was a decided sense of care taken to exactly hit each word in the book, perhaps to the detriment of some emotional moments, or pauses to bring frustration, tension or concern to the fore.
The mystery and it’s unraveling was best realized in this book, and with the addition of Holly’s unique abilities, really kept me interested in finding out who the killer was, and just why they did it. With a romance that didn’t go far enough to redeem Cade by his behaviors, and a few of Holly’s own insecurities left unexplained, there are more answers yet to discover in her ongoing story, not the least of which is if Cade will fully flush out into a believable romantic interest, not just one of convenience or ‘fated’ to be.
I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
I enjoyed this story characters and it was fun intriguing and non-stop action. I hope this is a series because I really want to see where it goes. Good reading and great writing. Thanks.
Nulls are individuals whose proximity immediately nullifies magical energy. Vampires are defanged, weres can't shift and sorcerers can't perform spells. Being a null does not make Holly James popular, but she has found a way to make it profitable. She can equalize a room of supernaturals in situations where emotions run high and tempers flare (interspecies negotiations, were-opposum weddings, etc).
Things get interesting when her paternal grandfather asks for her help in solving the murder of a moneyed socialite. He's never wanted anything to do with Holly (an embarrassing offshoot of his magically powerful family tree), but Cade, his lead investigator has made no progress...and it's an election year. If she can quickly and quietly help solve the crime, he will help Holly find her missing mother.
Of course Cade and Holly immediately clash, yet are passionately attracted to one another.
The Null concept is not unique. Scarlett Bernard in Melissa Olson's fictional world is also a null working with supernaturals. Scarlett must fight to achieve some small measure of security and worth in a universe where she is nearly powerless. Holly's world is much less dark. She feels both guilt and love for her supernatural grandmother's sacrifice in raising a null, but generally does not feel personally threatened by Others in the supernatural community.
This book is much lighter and breezier than the Scarlett Bernard series. Holly is a delightful smartass whose only real goals in life are finding her missing mother and augmenting her designer purse collection. She could be perceived as shallow, but I respect Holly for knowing her limitations and when to ask for help. Cade is a good counterpart, understandably annoyed at being saddled with a woman who has no investigative experience and who nullifies his magical talents. I look forward to reading the next one.
Imagine living in a world where anyone magic detests you...
Loved the plots and twists in the story, loved the characters. Loved that the story was about someone who is a null - someone who stops magic around them, its not an exciting power, in many ways its an anti-power that makes magicals not want to associate with her... a book that I enjoyed reading, that made me chuckle... and sets the grounds for a good series.
4 stars out of 5 As a reader of almost any genre I get very excited when two of my favorites are combined in such a brilliant way as they are in this book. The question is, is this a Paranormal book with a Mystery twist or vice versa? To me, it does not matter, it is just entertaining and a great read. It had me guessing till the very end and hoping that this is not the only book written by this author. This is about Holly, a magic dampener called a null. She is an outcast in the Magic community and that is more than okay with her until she is forced to help a Sorcerer to find a vicious killer. Cade is an arrogant but very sexy Sorcerer who doesn’t want the help but he has no say and that doesn’t make him too happy. As they work together some feathers get ruffled and that makes for an entertaining read for me. Will they be able to find the murderer before they kill each other? This had everything I could want in a book. I am sure you will feel the same. As I was reading this book I was reminded often of Patricia Briggs, less werewolf more magic, but the feel is the same. The feeling that I am not putting this book down until its done is there from the first word. I am going to be keeping my eye out for Terri Austin because I have a feeling she is going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Hold on to your hats and get ready for a wild ride, Dispelled by Terri Austin is here and it's going to take you through a mystical world that will have you hanging on to the edge of your seat. November seems to have been a paranormal/ fantasy month for me and this was my favourite book so far! The first book in the 'Null for hire' series Dispelled introduces us to Holly James a magical 'Null' and Cade Mcallister a sorcerer.
Now what is a Null I hear you ask a Null is someone who strips magic from those around them temporarily if course. For Holly being a Null had caused some problems in her life stripping magic from those around her doesn't win you any points in the magical world or with the magical users around you.
When a knock at the door brings Holly face to face with Cade McAllister and a family she didn't even know she had asks for help she can't say no. A magical Investigator the last thing Cade should do is involve himself with a Null her very presence strips him of his magic and wards his protection but there's something about Holly that calls to his inner man. This paranormal mystery gets top marks from me 5 stars! I was kept guessing to the very end at who the murderer would be and I loved the characters throughout the book.
Holly is a null - she makes all magic disappear when she is close by - and that has not made her very popular in the magic community. After being bullied for it most her life she now has a profitable business 'null for hire'. After her mom disappeared after her birth, Holly was raised by her grandmother. She does not know her father.
And then one day her grandfather seeks contact. He wants her to help sorceror Cade McAllister with the murder case of a young witch. She has to nullify a curse. He also asks her work with Cade in exchange for finding her mother. Cade is not amused and wants Holly to quit the case. They are attracted to each other, but when he is with Holly he can't use his powers. As Holly says, they are on different sides of the magical coin.
I loved this story! Holly is a determined and sassy woman on a mission. And Cade... Cade.. yummy. I can't wait for the next in this new series.
I am not normally a big fan of paranormal romance. I like action on the streets, not between the sheets. That said, I still loved this book! Action a-plenty and a cool premise for the main character. I'm not sure I've read a book before with a Null included, let alone as the main character. Holly has a fairly pragmatic attitude about her ability/disability. What hasn't killed her has made her stronger. Terri has the unenviable task of writing the story with Holly as a Null and how it affects those magical 'Others' around her. Editing must be a stone blast with not only with regular continuity, there's the Null effects during the action. Terri handles it wonderfully. Much as I adore tough, snarky Holly, my two favorite characters are Abby and Sunny. Both just made me grin each time they arrived on the scene. Definitely recommend.
Sometimes you get lucky with a book. This is that kind of book for me. A good mystery, a feisty heroine, snark served hot of the fire. Characters to love and despise everywhere and unique situation.... never before have I visualized a were opossum wedding with cow patties scattered about in triple digit summer heat.... my nose is still twitching in sympathy.
And the best part of this urban paranormal? The heroine's secret weapon.... her presences nullifies magic. I want more, lots more. When I have ten volumes in hand we can discuss Ms Austin's first vacation, until then back to the keyboard. I'll bring the sweet tea and brownies you just keep typing Miss Terri
I had read another book about nulls but really enjoyed this one so much more. It kept my interest so well that I spent a whole day reading it in one fell swoop. (during football conference championships too!). Well designed, fleshed out characters in some quirky situations and then more dangerous situations. Can't wait to read the next one!
This was a fun and quick read and I really enjoyed the concept of nulls in the magical world. I read a lot of fantasy, but generally stay away from romance. That said, I enjoyed the romantic aspect of this book more than I thought I would, and I appreciated it that it seemed like a secondary aspect, rather than the focus of the book. I'm excited to see how the rest of the series goes.
I loved this book! It is the first book that I have read by Terri Austin and I plan on reading many more. Holly is a great character, with interesting ability of a Null. Something a little out of this world, even in a world filled with magic and sorcerers, like Cade. It has everything a good book needs: magic, mystery, romance and of course a story that draws you in!
ok plot, trite, overdone, writing. Not worth the three dollars I paid for it. Something I would expect to see from a thirteen year old writing her first story about unicorns and rainbows. Will not be reading from this author again.
This is the first book I have read by this author , I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It had a vibe that reminded me of Amelia Hutchins, I will be looking out for other books in the series.
