In the City of 207 a citizen’s duty is singular in nature … to obey. Subservient to the Authority of Central Planning and trapped within by a two-thousand-foot wall, every facet of human life is structured to ensure compliance with authoritarian dictums. A good citizen is an obedient citizen. For Jack Moore, though, his monotonous life of blind servitude is turned inside out when he learns there is a small band of rebels who have chosen to disobey. Upon joining their ranks he will discover what it means to be free and the potentially terrible costs that come with standing against the State. Who are the Seers that monitor the City of 207? Why are citizens required to take three pills every morning? What was The Great Silence that occurred in the year 2075? Join Jack and the rebels as they discover the answers to these questions and wrestle with the implications of freedom and self-actualization as they stand in defiance of a world that demands they obey.
Obey is not an easy book to review. What starts as your typical dystopian tale eventually turns into something no one expects. For me, that is a good thing, though genre purists may object.
There is a whole lot of characters, most of which offer their own unique perspectives on the way their world (or what they know of it) works. I particularly liked the initial "villains." They are all very easy to understand.
As for what happens in the end... you will either love it or hate it. Personally, I find the conclusion more than fitting.
this book was absolutely incredible! It was an amazing journey with all the characters who became my new friends. The things they went through and the overcoming attitudes and efforts they made and the trusting of one another while still being scared to death were inspiring and heartwarming. The beginning of this book was reminiscent to George Orwell's 1984 and other dystopian societies. But don't be deceived! It takes its own Direction buy 23% into the book! Such an amazing read that you won't want to put it down! McLean is a source of amazing imagination, hard science fiction, suspense, and a little bit of fantasy thrown in. His clean and thought-provoking novel is a gift to us readers. Thank you Mr McLean
