This book is comprised of Fourteen Near-Death Experiences and context from Dr. P.M.H. Atwater's research. There is a magical, mystical, thin veil of perception between this world and the other side and there is a point in most people’s lives when they contemplate, “What happens when we die?” Consciousness Continues seeks answers to this mystery, through first-hand accounts of people who have died, were resuscitated, and returned with vivid memories of the other side. Consciousness Continues addresses more than a morbid curiosity among readers, it also presents the hardships that often come in the wake of an NDE. The survivor is often confronted with a skeptical public, disbelieving family and friends, and a society that dismisses the supernatural or humor it only when applied to religion or entertainment. It is not uncommon for NDE survivors to experience depression, difficulty adjusting back to life in the here and now, thoughts of suicide, and the metaphysical challenges of straddling a fence between two worlds. In most cases, survivors keep their NDE a secret for fear of being ostracized...until the day they can no longer remain silent. Throughout the book, Dr. P.M.H. Atwater, a pioneering researcher on the subject of Near-Death Experience, and a survivor herself provides context for the survivors’ stories as she shares the knowledge and insight gained through her extensive study of NDE.
I have read several near death books. What sets this one apart is it is more of a book for those who have had the experience of near death. It really went through the stages of what individuals go through. The people who are the main focus in this book offer advice for the experiencer as well as those who associate with them. I would say this book is for anyone who knows someone who has had the experience or those who come in contact with them. One story that really struck me was at a conference where they asked in the audience who had experienced a near death. A guy got up and told his beautiful experience and how it had ruined his life. He ended by saying I wish I never had it. Then a woman tells hers and she had a hellish experience. However, she said it was the best thing that happened to her. Made her look at her life differently. What was extra special about this book is there is a short documentary on some of the individuals who are featured in this book. So you have a face with the name. The short documentary is on Amazon prime videos. I just want to add that I give a 5 star rating to books I would be willing to read a second time.
I'm hoping to update this review at a later date to better reflect ALL of my thoughts on it, but WOW.. READ THIS BOOK.
Kudos to those in the book that shared their stories and to the author for gathering together these magnificent tales from the "other side". I've personally had some odd experiences, and not only did this book remind me that I am not alone in those experiences, it showed me the importance of sharing those types of stories with others.
Thank you for putting this together, Heather Dominguez, and I can only hope to find more books on similar topics providing this level of compassion, love, and interest.
As someone who has had a couple of NDEs, I have been searching and absorbing anything and everything pertaining to NDEs, in hopes of understanding and coming to terms with what has happened to me...what continues to happen. I'm amazed and hopeful there is a valid interest in what so many of us have gone through, enough so others can gain from our experiences. Many thanks to the author and interviewees for sharing these experiences. I've learned more about myself and what I have gone through in terms of validating to myself that I'm not imagining things. If you have an open mind, then this is mandatory reading!
It seems that the more I read the greater thirst for knowledge I have. I enjoy hearing about other people's experiences and seeing how they have things in common but yet each experience is unique at the same time. That is what makes these readings so great for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It provided some ideas and insights I’ve never thought about before. I wanted to give this book 5 stars but I didn’t care for the organization of the content. I had to keep going back to the first part of the book to remind myself who each of the subjects were. But, it was well worth the effort.
This interesting book highlights work the author did on a film project of the same name. This goes one step farther than most writings on NDE. It follows the experiencers as they share the reactions from others about these life altering events. Valuable learning for anyone interested in this subject.
