The author uses the principles in his book, Refinery Process Modeling, to present a stepwise, simulator-independent model building procedure. This problem illustrates the many principles involved in modeling a complete crude distillation system and the associated heat network.

Starting with the set up of the basic information for the crude oil, this problem takes you through the heating and desalting of the crude oil prior to the crude furnace. Cracking adjustments are also discussed for the crude and vacuum column feeds.

Simulation configurations are included for the crude and vacuum columns, including a general method for representing the vacuum column boot sub-cooler as a part of the column solution.

Easily converged performance specifications for both columns are presented, as well as alternate specifications for the finalized model.

Techniques are presented for building the various pumparound flows used in the preheat train.
