When Archer Hughes came back from serving his country, he didn't come back quite like he went in. The pain and trauma he saw all around him gave him scars that only few chose to see. Shane Dixon knows about the pain and trauma of returning veterans. He runs a soup kitchen to help them in their time of need. But when Archer and Shane meet and find themselves in a makeshift friendship, they fall for one another much deeper than either of them suspect. Can Shane help Archer overcome his flashbacks? Can Archer show Shane an honest love that he's never had before? By the final page in their story, they'll both realize that despite what life deals them, they are unshakeable.
*** Lovely short story of two men who find what they need. Shane runs a Soup Kitchen, and SafeSpace, where he helps veterans get help.
Archer is a veteran with PTSD that needs controlling. He works construction and volunteers at the soup kitchen. Shane looked up and saw a new man chopping veggies for soup stock, and introduced himself. Each time he comes in they talk a bit more and Shane is developing a crush, but also knows he must stay professional. When Archer's boss is looking for him to see why he quit coming to work, Shane is concerned, because he's not volunteering either. Shane decides to find him, and discovers his apartment in shambles. Shane tracks him down to his family's cabin. He stays to see if he can be the friend the man needs. While sharing the space and chores, fishing, and watching movies, the men become closer. They sleep together, where Shane can help with the nightmares.
This situation turns into expanding feelings, kisses, and eventually sexy times. These are first time M/M times for Archer.
Wonderful characters, lots of anticipation, steamy sex, plus a sweet, slow burn romance. ENJOY ! =====================
I'm voluntarily reviewing a free advance reader copy I received from the author.
Shane runs a soup kitchen with his best friend, and Archer comes in one day to volunteer. Archer is a bit closed off, and Shane is a bit more forward. Archer doesn't want interaction, but Shane pushes his way through Archer's defenses. The two end up eventually becoming friends, but that is mostly driven by Shane's attraction to Archer and his persistence in trying to have conversation.
Archer is pretty uncomfortable with the concept of being gay, so he pushes Shane away a lot until he just can't anymore. I liked how they were when they were together, and I liked how Shane helped Archer with his nightmares and panic attacks. I do have to admit that I was not a fan of Archer after they finally got together, and I don't quite know that I would have forgiven Archer so easily for running away and going to the bar.
Maybe I'm the only one, but I didn't like this book.
First of all, I thought Archer was a jerk and Shane was way too nosy too quickly. Secondly, I just don't like books where characters smoke. It turns me off. Lastly, if I had seen Archer kissing another man in a bar after telling Shane he wasn't gay, I think I would have been way more upset and hurt, especially with the way Archer talked to him. But no, Archer and Shane go back to Archer's place, quickly make up for reasons not clear to me and everything is wonderful. Too much drinking and smoking for me. Should have stopped reading it at that point, because after that, the book got even worse for me. Sorry, just not the story I was expecting from the synopsis.
Beau Bishop has done it again. Characters so well written and with such depth. Shane and Archer meet at a time when they both really need it. I loved how Shane was a friend first no matter how he felt inside. It's hard to keep trying when you are given little encouragement. Watching Archer grow to accept himself and what he wants was amazing. Great job. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
Archer shows up at Shane’s soup kitchen turning Shane every which way but straight with his refusal to engage in any sort of polite conversation. Until Shane realizes he is a vet, and finds a way to become friends, however an awkward moment has Archer doing what he does best, running. Shane tracks him down but again things become intimate then awkward and Archer runs yet again. Sweet and sad short about a vet who cannot seem to escape his demons alone and a persistent man who may just be the one to put those demons to rest permanently. **I voluntarily chose to review a copy of this book and I have not been compensated in any way**
I liked a part of this story where Archer and Shane got to know each other. Sure partly because of Shane, who was pushy with his affection toward Archer. Nonetheless, I felt like there was something missing between them. Archer wasn't as developed as he should have been. Something was just missing. Sure they fell in love with each other, but still..., it could have been better.
