It's pretty awesome to have a graphic novel series set in Appalachia. The CARBON/SALT series mirrors the troubles faced by this region--namely, the plundering of its natural resources, leaving devastation and poverty in its wake; and the hypocrisy of politicians who use dog-whistle phrases to get elected, then beat the people down even more.
In SALT, the West Virginians have even more problems than they usually do, when horrifying monsters are unleashed through the fissures in the ground caused by extractive industries.
True, there's some silliness above and beyond the supernatural elements--the world is at the brink of destruction, and you're playing baseball?--and the ending was way too corny for me, but I'm glad to see one of America's most neglected regions get a nod.
