Still in the throes of fake dating Satsuki and trying to mend fences between the former and Mai, Renako gets a little assist from Ajisai. But bringing Mai and Satsuki together is like inviting a bonfire to a gasoline convention and the only way out might have Renako’s destiny on the line…
This is all-female Tenchi Muyo!, practically. I think we might get an actual resolution down the line, but otherwise it has the same energy with regard to poor Renako, erstwhile loser, attracting everything in her friend group.
Except it can be a little too mean in places, especially with Satsuki, who might be the grump with a heart of (horny) gold, but the ratios are all off for reader enjoyment, skewing way too hard for the cranky parts and the pushy bits.
Which is especially a bummer when not only does there turn out to be a strong backstory and reason why Satsuki is so upset with Mai, which is great, but it then defangs the whole thing with an attempt at humour that doesn’t go well.
And it’s not like Mai couldn’t stand to be brought down a peg, even if she is a great character by virtue of being very, very self-assured, but having the most boring, wet fish of a character do it is really not the best way to do it. It gets the job done, but inelegantly.
In fact, I would go so far as to label it as downright cruel, which is another problem. This series can be very fun; it is, in fact, quite amusing at times with how exaggerated and silly it gets, but when it goes mean it goes a little too far, like it doesn’t know when to quit.
I guess that’s the downside for a story having forward motion versus being stuck in shenanigans forever - the way you choose to move forward can be just as problematic as remaining inert. Satsuki twists the knife on Mai several times and it’s really not much fun or that strong dramatically.
Things are smoother with regard to Ajisai - there’s clearly an incoming arc with her and Renako and she is entirely more nice than the imperious Mai and the terminally cold Satsuki, so I’m hoping that goes a bit lighter.
I don’t love the way Renako gets treated by either of her would-be partners here either. The stakes of the competition are ridiculous enough, but the rivalry between Satsuki and Mai is so overblown that they literally treat Renako like a piece of meat with a blue ribbon. Yeah, it’s tongue in cheek, but you still need to write it well.
Anyway, things are better by the end, when Mai walks back some of her stupid proclamations while spending a little quality time with Renako. The whole ‘friends with Renafits’ thing is so dang silly, but it’s like a breath of fresh air and divested of all the nonsense they make a very enjoyable pairing that has the best steamy bits in the book.
Eh, an average volume all the same. I’m glad that we can hopefully put this Satsuki arc firmly behind us and move on to greener pastures. It has its moments - Mai’s choice of meeting place is naturally outrageous - and the side bars from Renako give it a boost, just not enough of one.
3 stars - uneven with a side of mean. People who like Satsuki will be well served, but I was just waiting for this to get it over with for the most part and it’s somewhat okay, but nothing close to its preceding volumes.
I think I’m too old to enjoy these. And I hate that cause I really want to. Middle school me would have been all about the *drama*. But adult me can’t stop thinking… she could just… not? Again though, I found myself sinking in to a deep ick in the first half, rage quitting for a few days, and then coming back to finish the second half and being pleasantly surprised by how nice everything is buttoned up. I will probably read the next one. It’s a solid series it’s just very… young characters going through hormones and high school. Ya know. I read these for my past teen self that didn’t get to experience things like this at their age but honestly sometimes these make my inner teen with the floopy bangs cringe, and that’s saying something.
Okay, I actually liked the way that Mai and Satsuki's relationship was handled. Satsuki's feelings for and about Mai are so complicated, and her naturally competitive nature masks a lot of her softer emotions. She and Mai still need to be better about respecting Renako, but this was a pretty good volume - plus "duking it out via FPS" felt very real for this group.
