“Started out great, then went down hill fast. I love the take-charge, arrogant alpha hero who absolutely cannot resist the heroine’s charms. He absolutely has to have her, no matter what. For me Jack was totally opsite of that. I like a strong heroine who knows what she wants and goes after it but this was just a big

In between nonsensical blatherings they have sex, which he possesses boundless expertise. Obviously.... Luckily, virginal Abi also becomes an orgasm machine, chucking them out all over the place. So much so that she overlooks Jakck's general bastardry and bends over nicely for a few beatings.
And then the cliff ending wich make no sense at all for me....I have no idea what the author was hoping to achieve accept more nonsense material for a second book! After finishing the first book I will not read the next 2 as I just don't care what hapens next. Ohh and Jack...

A deliciously dark trip down a sensual road full of turns and twists. You won’t be able to put this well layered book down.
I loved Abby from the beginning. She’s an everyday heroine I really found myself invested in. Independent, intelligent, and real, I got it. She’s not perfect, in the way that none of us is, which made her relatable and believable.
Finishing her last year of college, the last thing Abby expects to do is meet a man like Jack. Hell, none of us expects to meet a man like Jack. Though we might wish we could. The handsome wealthy man with a dark streak ensnares and fascinates her. A chance meeting turns to a life-saving situation, that I believe bonds them.
Jack opens her up to her own sexuality, hidden wants, and provocations. But it’s no easy road. Jacks a man with a past that’s hardened his soul, and soured him toward anything more than sex and fun. He’s a layered, complex, sexy, infuriating man. Yes, all the great makings of a hero you can’t help but lose your heart to. Wait, did I say hero? Let’s say male lead. *laughs. You’re intrigued now, yes? But I don’t want to give too many thing away. I will say he’s a man with many secrets, walls, and issues.
The fabulous thing about this book is that the minor characters are equally as interesting. You keep turning the pages to catch a glimpse of these spectral with their own treasure trove of issues, experiences, and secrets. I loved how fleshed out this was.
This is one of those books you’ll find yourself thinking about long after you’ve read it. Their road to happiness is anything but smooth. None of the best romances are. The push and pull is real, and this is book one of three. So there’s no buttoned up ending with all ends tied. But it is intriguing, sexy, and thought provoking. If you’re looking to step deeper into the world of BDSM with your romance this is the perfect place to start. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s done tastefully and in a way I think even those not inclined toward Abby and Jacks’ appetites can appreciate.

Jack Landon is in control of his business and his life, or so he thinks. After saving the beautiful and clumsy Abigail he can't stay away from her. The attraction is undeniable. He is the dark and she is pure light. Can she diminish the shadows on his soul?
This book had me feeling every emotion as the characters were experiencing them.
Rue Volley definitely has a way with words and tells a story that will stay with you long after the last page. I highly recommend this book and the author too. Do yourself a favor and one-click this book and book 2 The Devils Fire at the same time as there's a huge cliffy in this book.

Abigail “Abi” is a simple 23 year old, just finishing school, trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life, and she is also a virgin. She’s not ashamed of it, she just hasn’t found the right guy she wants to be intimate with yet. One day out at a coffee shop she sees Jack Landon, one of the most successful, richest, unattainable bachelors. She’s so busy swooning that she trips in the street and almost gets hit by a bus and he ends up saving her. He invites her over for dinner along with many people from the press, and announces that they are dating, even though he never mentioned anything to Abi. She’s shocked by his revelation and at first is a little unsure of why a rich and powerful man wants to date her but after a while she decides to go ahead with it. Jack wants Abi, but first he wants her to fully submit to him. Abi is a little nervous about it but when she feels ready, Jack for some reason never fully goes all the way. Abi feels that she is in love and she is still unsure of why someone amazing like Jack would want to be with someone like her. Jack is by far from perfect though. Jack and his family have many secrets. Some that they go out of their way to make sure that no one will ever find out.
Jack’s troubled past was actually pretty shocking. I thought it was a very good twist with his character and actually felt sorry for what he’s going through, and will have to go through for the rest of his life. It seems that characters like him always have “a dark past” but the little extra twist with him is something you don’t see too often and was unexpected and new. A minor issue is how fast the characters fall in love. They don’t really know each other very long but seem to fall in love quickly. If Abi went on a few more dates and they talked a little more than it would be more natural, but I know this is a love story so the characters do have to fall in love soon so minor nitpick.
The ending will leave you shocked and craving for the next book!

The latest release from erotica author (and talented artist) Rue Volley is not a typical erotica novel whatsoever. But I wouldn't expect anything else from Hot Ink Press!
With your typical erotica, you usually get straight up sex right off the bat. Sexy girls and lusty guys abound. Well, you do get a very lusty man in Jack Landon. He's sexy, dashing and mysterious. But he's also got a lot of baggage that is deeper than the normal leading man carries. I enjoyed learning more about him as the book went on.
Abigail I absolutely loved. She's a very relatable character: smart, sweet and honest. She knows what she wants and doesn't want. She willingly gives Jack control, but doesn't give up her sense of self.
This book is about bondage, about giving up control, and Abigail has a lot to give, more than most other leading ladies ever do. The story shows what submissives who are just discovering life in the bondage scene go through, but Abigail's subdrop is different, because she is different. In fact, it takes more than half of the book for sex to actually happen.
You, as a reader, don't miss it as much as you might think. This book proves that you don't need constant, repetitive sex to make it a great erotica novel. Everything in this book is erotic, from stitching up a wound to a simple kiss. You'll find yourself turned on by the littlest things.
That's what great erotica writing is: the ability to turn the reader on with every single word. I love, love, love this book. I think Rue did a great job with the characters, the plot and the very essence of the story. BDSM is more than whips and chains, much more, and she really captured the emotions behind the scenes.

Imagine Wuthering Heights mixed with the darker elements of Jane Eyre and explicitly explored kinky sex. Although, in many ways, this story is more about sensuality than sex and sensuality is very, very sexy.
It's masterfully written. The pace is perfect. The character development intriguing. It is so much more than a hot read, but mark my words it is a hot read and at times it will leave you breathless. It doesn't matter whether you love or hate Jack, at times I felt both, he is a catalyst and Abigail is the butterfly.
It held me like a lover's hand cupped gently under my chin, until the final moments, when the story slapped me hard across the face. I didn't see that coming.

Rue Volley has done it again. This book is an amazing read. I really wish that we had the option for more than 5 stars. I had problems with putting it down to eat or sleep. Just a warning, make sure you have a change of panties, or a few changes. You will need them, I promise. I was so excited when I was offered a beta copy of this book. I can't wait for everyone else to be able to read it. This is the first book of the trilogy. I am already begging for the next book!
Abigail Watson, or Abi as most people call her, is just your normal college girl. Well, she's 23 and getting ready to graduate, but she is a virgin. She wasn't into the party and dating scenes. She was there to bust her butt, graduate (which she does, with honors), and start her career with a great job. She lost her father when she was 17.
I really love abi and connected with her. She's awesome.
Her roommate, Avery, is hilarious and had me cracking up. All I will say is BANANA and "Vampire checklist". Once you read this awesome book, you'll understand.
Abi thinks she knows exactly what she wants in life, the things I posted about above, but some of that changes after she meets Jack and embarrasses herself....BULLET - before he saves her from being hit by a bus.
Who knew getting stitches could be so freaking hot!
Jack Landon owns everything. He is very mysterious and hot. There is an instant attraction. You can tell he is into some heavy things. He thinks he is a monster and he wants Abi to see it.
"Why, Abigail, does it hurt to hear the truth from me? To understand what really sets me free? I want to be treated as I deserve. For the animal that I am. I want you to submit to that part of me. Until you do, you will never know who I am, not fully."
Abi changes, she wants to submit to him. And he wants to open up more to her, but he just can't. They don't have an easy, safe road to travel.
"If you want to fuck me like you hate me, then do it. Hurt me, cut me - take everything that I have to offer you and devour it. Devour every piece of me. I offer that to you, but don't, don't pretend that you don't know what I am."
There are a few surprises in this book that I honestly didn't see coming. I had a few "oh shit" moments while reading as well.
"Together we were fire, pure and red hot. Hopefully, it would never consume us."

The Devil's Gate is truly an amazing, all consuming read. The way Rue Volley writes, it sucks you in. She takes you into the world of these characters, that her brilliant mind made up.

This is a story you don't want to stay away from. The way the author has wrote this story can go in so many directions....But there is only one direction I would like to see it go. Slow and Kinky :)
There's defiantly a Love/Hate relationship storm brewing in my mind! Even with the main character, Abigail. She chooses danger over safe, comfortless over comforting. The knowing with Sam over The unknowing with Jack. Jack is mysterious, adventurous and unpredictable. There's times I thought I had figured him out, then there's a twist in his personality making him no where to be found. I do like how Jack thinks!!
Victoria, Jack's mom, is vicious from the beginning. There's no loving her! Jerod, Jack's brother, I'm still deciding! Rose, Jack's ex-wife, I just don't like her because to me she's the OTHER women! Maybe I can get to know her in Book 2. "Which I will be Reading!" Sam, the hopeless romantic. I just plain love him!
Rue has made GREAT Beginning to a story I know I will truly enjoy :)

Rue Volley manages to leave you hating her and begging for more in the same breath.
Much like I imagine her (sexy as hell) male lead can and will do to Abby many times throughout this trilogy.
the characters are much more in-depth than other erotic novels. Volley gives little glimpses which make Abigail especially seem to be just like one of my friends... or me. :)
Even the side characters seem very solid, not to mention hilariously involved in their friends lives, I found myself looking forward to having the roommate return from a trip, just to see what she would have to say about a plot development,
though this book has a bdsm tag, it is very light. not something I would be embaressed to discus with anyone. I've gotten sick of bdsm novels that are nothing more than physical chains and whips. there tends to be an actual relationship, which rue has managed to portray amazingly.
if you have any interest in bdsm, sex, or just a damned good read, look no further.

OMG! Miss Volley has created a world like no other. I Love this sensually erotic and sexilicious story of self discovery.
Very well written, fast paced, and hard to put down, with just the right amount of twisted mystery to keep one glued in their seat until the end, unless family obligations tear them away.
I can tell that Miss Volley has invested herself into the character development and Hawt Dayum scenes that will leave you breathless.
I highly recommend this series to those 18+ who like erotic reads. Job Well Done Miss Volley.

Rue Volley is a force of nature. Her writing style has a way of cutting straight to the chase without mincing any words. She literally slaps you in the face with the story. I am sure that The Devil's Gate will be compared to 50 Shades of Grey and in some ways, that is justified. But where 50 Shades gave us a cotton candy version of submission and domination, Rue delivers a far more believable take on this subject and with far more likeable characters. Bravo, Rue.

This book made me ranty. Like, really ranty. There were just too many TSTL moments. So here is my warning, this review will be full of ranty spoilers, read at your own risk. I will hide the spoilery parts with a spoiler tag on Goodreads so no one comes across it by accident.
Let's start with the blurb, the "brush with death" was so anti-climactic as to be a non-issue. But this paves the way for Abigail, the uber-naive 23 y/o virgin to come into closer contact with Jack, the dark and depraved billionaire. A little reminiscent of FSOG here. Honestly it was the heroine that I had such an issue with - she was just such a doormat! And stupidly naive and weak. Let's look at some of her stupidly stellar moments here:
Then we have Jack, the illusive rich boy. He really came off as a huge douche. They would be together then all of a sudden he would turn cold and distant and she wouldn't hear from him for weeks or months, which necessitates Abigail chasing after him like a sad puppy. Between him, his whack job of a family, and his I just couldn't get behind Jack as a hero. Nothing about the relationship felt genuine. Plus there was this weird three-way instalove with Abigail to Jack and Sam to Abigail, that just didn't make sense. I can usually tolerate instalove but it was too extreme in these situations.
So for me, the most interesting aspect of the book was all of the batshit crazy people. First we have Rose, who has been in a mental hospital for years, But by far the most interesting character was Jack's dad, diagnosed with borderline schizophrenia mixed with some bi-polar and manic depressive states. And
The cliffhanger combined with the crazy people and demented family has piqued my interest enough that I will read (or at least skim) the next book to find out what happens. I just hope Abigail matures and stops being such a doormat.

Every time I pick up a book by author Rue Volley I feel like I am transported to another place - this book is no exception. She is an amazing writer no matter what the genre, and can adapt to any story with an ease that continues to amaze me. When I first started the book, my first thought was that Abigail could NEVER keep up with Jack...I mean come on, he is rich, experienced and so not into "vanilla" sex....but then they meet in a dark theater and all of my previous thoughts went right out the window. Abigail can and will be able to handle Jack, will Jack be able to handle her?!?!
The characters are so much fun to read about - author Rue Volley is a master at secrets, twisted, curving roads and at keeping readers on the very edge of their seats wondering what may happen next. There were times throughout the story that I was literally biting my nails, shaking my legs in anticipation and other times when I was out and out fanning myself to calm down. She is a master at weaving the story to be tight, complex and at the same time filled with sexual tension and innuendos - and the reader soaks it all up and loves it!
This is a must read for any and all readers - it has a little bit of everything thrown into it. I am on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen now that Rose has made a reappearance! I hope that book 2 comes out sooner rather than later! I NEED to know!! Make sure you add this book to your TBR list and add it soon, as it should NOT be put off! This is an amazing story that will leave the reader panting for more!

Abigail Watson is innocent, pure and super clumsy!! She has dedicated herself to her graduate school education and left nothing in between. BUT Leave it to Jack Landon to save her every time she falls or falters and to put something (ahem) between then.
Now for hardcover EROTICA fans, don't expect full throttle here as Rue Volley EASES you into a blissful state. WHEN SHE DOES MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FAN OR YOU WILL FAINT. The plot is intricate and gets tricky towards the end, but it's captivating.

Rue has done it again with another awesome book!! Once I started it I could not put it down I had to know what happen next!! Abigail meets Jack London the mysterious heir to the Landon fortune and her savior from a certain death. She can't keep away from Jack in fact she is in love with him. But Does Jack love her back? Soon she sees a different side of him. Jack's Ex-Wife comes back which I do not like. Will Jack go back to Rose or will he stay with Abigail? This story leaves you off at the end wanting more and wanting to know what happens next!! This Book is Sexy as Hell and you won't be able to put it down!! I Can't wait for Book 2!!!! I loved the plot and sensuality of The Devil's Gate. Rue has created a heroine who is a mixture of relatability, sexiness, and awkward that I'm in awe of. Jack...oh let me describe Jack. He's dark and twisted and sexy. The erotic elements of the novel are well written and in a lot of ways, exotic. You'll never look at ice the same again. :)
I'm still processing exactly how I feel after reading book one in the Devil's Gate trilogy. I love Rue's writing and hate her for leaving me wanting more at the same time. I can't wait for book two.

We meet Abi in a coffee shop. It’s a favourite place for her to hang out. In walks a very handsome man and he unnerves her. She finds out that he’s the mysterious Jack Landon, heir to the Landon fortune and pretty much NYCs answer to Bruce Wayne (money-wise at least). She steps outside and proceeds to step in front of an oncoming bus and he saves her life. And THIS is the start of the whirlwind journey that these two take.
In the midst of this is Avery, Abi’s roomie of almost four years and Sam, a guy she went to high school with and the only one who’s gone further than anyone else with a backseat groping at her senior prom, that she quickly shut down. Then there’s Jack’s mother and brother.
I’ll be honest here. I don’t like Jack. I don’t like how hot and cold he is. I don’t like how unconcerned he is about anyone else than his wants. I don’t like lack of honesty and disclosure. I don’t like Abi either. She allows him to treat her like crap and keeps going back asking for more. She finds out these truths and forgives him his blatant, unrepentant lies. Her behaviour isn’t that of someone in love, but rather obsessed and it’s unhealthy all the way around. I liked Sam. HE is a good guy. Granted he wasn’t as forthcoming about his own emotional entanglement, but that’s nothing over the stuff the other cad told…or didn’t tell rather. I liked Avery, she was a hoot. I couldn’t stand Jack’s mother, and though his brother is a complete jerk, he’s not as big a jerk as Jack himself.
Ms. Volley writes a compelling story. I have to admit that though there were some content discrepancies IN the story itself, it’s well written. I just flat can’t stand her characters. I’m debating if this were deliberate and I should read the other two books in the series, or if I should call it a day and not read any further. I’m truly on the fence on this one because it could really go either way.

There is something about a broken man you just want to fix. This story had me transfixed on how to help Jack! In the beginning of the book, I thought that clumsy, easily flustered Abby was going to be your soft, give in to everything kind of woman with Jack leading and teaching her as you go along. As I listened, I was pleasantly surprised by her intuitiveness and strength. Jack, the in control,alpha male has so many layers to his personality, you can't help but fall in love with him. Watching this relationship unfold, and meeting the supporting cast kept me captivated. Jack's family, especially his mother, you love to hate, but also feel that compassion for her when you learn of her past. Jarod you want to shake, and Peter..well, you have to read the book to see about Peter.
The narration of this book by Sierra Kline was perfect. She has great flow, a warm rich voice and differentiates between her characters so you know exactly who is speaking. I hope she continues the series.
I cannot wait for book 2...the cliffhanger does exactly what it's meant to...scramble for that next book!

I Love love LOVED The Devil's Gate. I bought this on release day and hesitated over reading it. Not because I doubted the author - exactly the opposite - I KNEW that Rue Volley would somehow lure me in, make me love the characters, the setting, the impossibility of the relationship. I knew that I would hope for that happy ever after, that I would laugh loudly, weep softly and yell my exclamations out into the silence of my room. Then after that - after my heart was firmly in her hands - she would destroy me. I literally screamed at the end of this book and No, that is not giving anything away because you want to know why I screamed...in fact you need to know. Beautifully written, engaging and silkily seductive this is a highly recommended read from me. Now I am off to hover over Rue's author page and stalk her until the next book is released.

What a dark and delicious tale! No spoilers here because you should read this book and fall in love and be surprised by the characters and the very well written setting as I was. I had an idea what it was about, but let me say that Rue Volley out did herself! The characters are so well written and have such depth, you feel as if you're reading about people you know. I loved how descriptive Ms.Volley is with the setting of the novel, it takes you right in and you feel like you're walking the halls of the places she's written. That aside let's talk about the eroticism content of The Devil's Gate...
Way more substance than the Christian Grey novels! Abigail is spunky, funny and a delight and Jack? well he will steal your heart and leave you wishing you were Abigail...A very well written sexy ride into the forbidden!!
