Can theology be practical? Entertaining? Relevant? Anyone who has heard Randy Harris speak will answer with a resounding, ''Yes!'' Combining his experience as a professor of theology with a popular style that makes the profound understandable, Harris opens us up to the world as God intends. These essays challenge us to a wider vision of the God who works in all things.
One thing Randy Harris will do is keep you entertained. The subtitle says it. The 'standup theologian' delivers. The second thing that you will experience is some very thoughtful teaching on how to do theology. Serious stuff, but we learn not to take ourselves too seriously. I highly recommend it.
Years ago, in what feel almost like a previous life, I was deeply connected to the church of Christ, and I had the privilege of hearing Randy Harris speak several times. He embodies much of what and who I aspire to be. And he's brilliant. And funny! Here are a number of his talks, turned into essays. I thought they were fantastic. Pop theology at its best. I hope to reread this in the future (and give a better, fuller review) and others of his.
I recently discovered Randy Harris and I love his work. He takes on heavy theological issues in a light fun way. He uses humor throughout and a lot of that humor is self deprecating humor. To me reading Randy's thoughts is like attending Church and hearing a great sermon only this contains 12 sermons and they are there for you to read at your leisure.
I am looking forward to reading more Randy Harris. He is the type of guy you would love to sit down with, have a cup of coffee and just chat about God.
I could say this book was entertaining and educational and inspiring, but it mostly is convicting (but in a nice Randy Harris way) about my relationship to God. I am grateful to Wayne Tincher and Rosalinda Tipton for both recommending it to me in the same week. I would say that God worked in that...but not in Calvinistic sort of way...I recommend it my searching for Christ friends, but you cannot have my copy!
Complex thoughts but humorous and approachable. Helped give words to some troubling concepts. Randy is knowledgeable and I believe these words come from a sincere heart looking to serve God. Love reading something and thinking, "yeah, what he said." Randy takes a philosophical and realistic look at why would someone want to be a Christian today?
Thought-provoking ideas, nice humor to relax the reading and very down-to-earth writing for everybody to understand. I might check the sequel to this book or other writings by Randy in the near future.
