If you want to read a boy meets girl kind of straightforward romance, do not read this review any further. Ruchi Singh's latest book -- Jugnu -- is a romance that delves deeper. Yes there are those moments of fluttering hearts and emotional ups and downs but they are anchored in real world dilemmas. Ashima, the protagonist is very much a real woman with real problems: a husband she loves who has been missing in action for four years since the Kargil War, looking after a little son and her husband's family while making ends meet by running a guest house. The only thing that drives her is the hope that someday her husband Rohit will return. Enter Zayd. A man who has done time in prison and has secrets to hide. What should Ashima make of the attraction that flares between them? Can she love two men equally? What kind of person does that make her? And then there is Zayd's own dilemmas of guilt and penance. Ashima and Zayd's story glitters with such issues and as the author pulls you into their story with a deft touch, you are completely hooked. The book is as mesmeric as the firefly it is named after.

I have been reading Ruchi’s blog where she writes flash fiction and have read her books Take 2 and Heart & Hots. And I truly admire her writing skills. When I came across her recent book, Jugnu, I had to read it. And boy, was I impressed! In fact, Jugnu is her best work till date.
Jugnu is more than a romance. It is an emotional ride with vivid and evocative writing. I was literally sucked into this story from the very first chapter. The characters are well etched and the story is realistic and relatable. That the story flows effortlessly and the language is impeccable is another reason to read this book. Highly recommended.

Some years ago, I read Ruchi Singh’s romance novel “Take 2”, and it left a lasting impressing. Imagine how excited I was to learn that she’s just released a new book! And I have to say, “Jugnu” didn’t disappoint in the least. In fact, it exceeded my already high expectations and I loved it even more than her previous book.

This book, to me, is so much more than a love story, although at the heart of it is indeed love – a forbidden, darling, sometimes innocent, sometimes volatile, often secret kind of love that made my heart ache and felt very real. “Jugnu” is also a story about stereotypes and prejudices, about familial bonds, hopes and fears, violence and injustice, and above all, about people trying to find themselves and be true to what or who they find.

Ashima is full of hidden strengths, and I admire how she handles the family, her loss and the unexpected attraction to Zayd. As for Zayd, I was intrigued right from the first few sentences, and I grew to like and then love him. These two truly were made for each other, and I found them so authentic and fascinating that I was dying to see them get their happy ending.

Not many romance novelists bother with elaborate descriptions or are very good at them when they do bother with them, but Singh is an exception. Neither too long nor too short, very visual and with an emotional connection, her descriptive passages about Kasauli and other places really drew me into the story and brought each scene alive. I also love her use of fireflies as a symbol throughout the novel (and the title, Jugnu). Perfect how in the beginning, the prologue uses the fireflies to capture impending doom and human fascination with the unknown, and how in the end, after the story has come full circle, she has the couple look up at the stars “twinkling like fireflies”.

This is by no means a normal boy-meets-girl story with a small conflict and lots of physical attraction but a tale of woes and hopes and true love overcoming all odds.

LOVED it! It's amazing how seamlessly & effortlessly the writer has dealt with sensitive social issues like young man falling for an older woman, criminal & widow rehabilitation and last but not the least inter-religion love/marriage. This is definitely a MUST-READ love story & I hope/pray this is soon made into a movie as well :-)

Jugnu by Ruchi Singh reminded me what absolute joy a well-written romance can be. Yet, to call this one just a romance would a bit of an injustice. While a love story is central to the narrative there is lots more to enjoy and savour.

Out on parole Zayd Abbas Rizvi heads off to Kasuali with his laptop for some peace and quiet. The plan is to keep to himself and avoid trouble of any kind. He finds lodging at a guest house run by the petite, ghost-chasing, sad-eyed Ashima, mom to a delightful three year old. Soon enough he forms bonds not just with Ashima but also with other residents of the guest house. And then quite unavoidably, he gets embroiled in their affairs even as he tries to figure out the truth about Ashima’s husband.

My Review

To begin with I loved the setting of the book – the quiet, picturesque hill town of Kasuali. I find the setting matters to me… a lot – it predisposes me to like or dislike a book and here it is just perfect for what the author has in store.

Like I mentioned, Jugnu isn’t just a love story. It is also the tale of two individuals with each of their stories so well written that you would want to reach out for a prequel, or maybe two. I would have liked to know the Ashima before she met Zayd, her life with Rohit and also the Zayd in his earlier life, his troubled childhood, his life with his girlfriend and his prison experiences. However, all we get are intriguing mentions that leave us asking for more.

Other than the protagonists, there are a host of other characters, each lovingly crafted, each likeable and/or relatable.

What I liked best about the book was that unlike most new age romance novels with their insta-love tracks, the love story here builds slowly and steadily. Stilted conversations move on to shared silences and from there to a gradual appreciation of each other – from indifference, to friendship to love. That is perhaps what made it believable. And of course there also was just the barest touch of romantic magic. The love story retains its charm without taking away from the intensity of either of the protagonists’ previous relationships – that couldn’t have been easy to write.

Beyond the characters there are enough twists and turns in this well-woven story to keep you happily turning the pages.

Endnote: This one is a refreshing wholesome romance perfect for a rainy day. I say pick it up.

Disclaimer: I was given a kindle copy of the book by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

The battery meter on my tab is bright red in color right now, and I'm still ignoring the 1% warning on it. Yes, 1% battery left. It was 65%, when I started reading 'Jugnu'. Ruchi Singh, I shall hold you responsible if my tab dies of malnutrition. What I'm trying to say here is that once you start reading it, you shall not be able to put the book down, not even for charging the tab...or yourself. That reminds me, I'm yet to have my dinner.

On a serious note, this book definitely is among the best romances I've read in a long time. The characterization is lively, the locales are real, the flow is smooth, and the build-up is palpitating.

What made it even more interesting for me was the fact that I had been on vacation to Kasauli, just a week before picking up this book. That's a serene hill-station, where the story of 'Jugnu' is set. Everything seemed that much more real to me, as I could visualize the locales clearly.

Read the blurb, and you'd want to read it at the soonest. I recommend this book to all those out there, who believe in love. In fact, I recommend it even more strongly to those who don't.

I give this book a full, five star.

I usually choose a book on the basis of pure instinct, rarely on the basis of reviews. Who doesn’t love fireflies and the umpteen metaphors that come to mind when you see them against the dark blue night in a forest? The title and the blurb instantly caught my attention. And so did Zayd who seems to leap out of the book to arrest your attention.

The prose is beautiful. The love that simmers between the main characters Zayd and Ashima is both intense and mellow at the same time. Every word is so elegantly strung together to form a flowing background for the pulsating, unrequited love and the barbed past that grips them. They live in an isolated world, each in a little bubble they have created to protect themselves from the harsh world.

I loved Ashima. Her character was refreshingly different from the many brash, modern heroines that we get to read about. She is delicate and silent, barely able to hold things together in the crumbling reality of her life, but resilient and dependable in an unobtrusive way. Her pain and weariness are palpable. Her independence and strength are invisible. But if you scratch the surface you'd find a spine of steel that helps her cope with her desultory existence.

I loved Zayd even more. A perfect combination of masculine and vulnerable. But his vulnerability cannot be described as a weakness even though he is flawed. It makes him more human and lovable. Zayd’s pain and anger against an unjust system is a brutal reality in the small pockets of the Muslim community today, where many innocent young men are looked upon with suspicion because of their religion. The author has brought out the problem without sounding preachy. Zayd’s ultimate act of courage for Ashima can only be described as pure, selfless love.

A young officer of the Indian Air Force who goes MIA, Rohit is present throughout the book even though he is physically absent.

Rohit’s mother is a typical mother-in-law. But she demands my sympathy because her anguish has turned to poison. Like Ashima, she is unable to believe or accept that her son has gone. The fact that Rohit was a soldier who lost his life fighting a Muslim enemy, adds weight to her grief. Her prejudiced view of all Muslims is shown from a traditional Brahmin’s perspective. It is terrible, the way she dies…in hopeless hope, just like Zayd’s ammi. They are the older generation of women, embittered and bewildered by a swiftly changing world, suffering helplessly against a patriarchal system, depending on their husbands and sons, without the support of education.

Ignorant of all the turmoil, is pure innocence itself, the little toddler Rishabh, who lives in the middle of a complex world of relationships. His laughter and adorable antics are such a relief in the tapestry of heavy emotions among the adults in the story.

All the other minor characters are well-crafted around the main ones.

The plot is realistic in many ways although the familiar tropes of a romance novel are all perfectly incorporated. There is reality lurking at every corner. The mood is melancholic and heavy with a fragile, ominous kind of expectation. It adds to the depth and layers of this story. It defines the infinite compassion and trust and love that Zayd and Ashima feel for each other.

The pace is slow, which is perfect for the plot and its backdrop of a small town. It meanders slowly like a deep river at certain places revealing the secrets of the past bit by bit.

Chapter twenty-five was beautifully written where death comes in many forms as a confirmation and conclusion. The act of grieving for the dead is a necessary but prolonged process to some and also life-altering to many.

The book remained in my head for many reasons even after I had turned the last page.

Jugnu is a pleasant and meaningful love story. I loved the character of Zayd - flawed yet sensitive & intense. The very special connection between Ashima and Zayd is beautiful and convincing.

Before I get into this review, I want to mention something about the star rating right away – this book holds the distinction of being the first indie romance to get 5 stars from me. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that I haven’t ever read anything better than this. I have indeed read some other books which were equally good.

Though for some weird reason, silly-past-me only gave 4.5 stars as the highest rating in this genre. Stupid, I know! But when it came to this book, I just couldn’t do it. Sure I could nitpick (I haven’t lost that useless talent yet), but what would be the point of that? This was a 5 star reading experience for me, and that’s all that should matter.

Now that I have cleared the air, with that super long introduction, let’s finally get to business.

Jugnu (Firefly) – The Review

I have read most (if not all) of the author’s past books, and Jugnu, is by far my favorite of the lot. Also, because I have read so many of the author’s books, there are some things that I know to look forward to in her stories.

For starters, she always challenges the norm in the genre of boy-meets-girl romances, and takes on bolder subjects while never veering from the dominant theme of romance.

Now I am not going to tell you what are the specific issues she handles in this book, because for one, I don’t want to take away from your enjoyment of discovering it page by page, and secondly, that’s not even the point.

Though I must say that the presence of these themes in her stories always makes for a multi-dimensional, well rounded tale, which is a joy to read.

And while we are speaking of well rounded, I can’t fail to mention the supporting cast of her books. She writes the most interesting side characters, who each have a personality and purpose of their own, and contribute to the story in a meaningful way, and are not just background noise.

In this book, the supporting cast came in many shapes & sizes, though my favorite one was an adorable & vivacious 3 year old charmer.

But as usual, I am getting ahead of myself here. Because I am already talking about the supporting cast without even mentioning the protagonists, whom by the way, I absolutely adored.

Zayd & Ashima are such unique characters, so refreshingly different that they stand out in the maze of hundreds of other characters that I read about all the time.

And Ruchi has etched them out so well, that not only do you come to know them through the pages, but also understand their innermost fears & deepest desires, and then you can’t help loving them and being invested in how things turn out for them.

Moreover, it’s one of those rare romances which is as subtle as it is intense. A bond so strong that tugs at your heartstrings.

Zayd & Ashima’s romance reminded me of this quote by Nicholas Sparks (I can’t seem to enjoy his books, but love his quotes!)

The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.

All in All: Jugnu is a heartwarming tale of love & loss, of despair & hope, of failure & redemption.

And while there are many twists & turns in this amazing ride that the author takes you on, before you get to the happily-ever-after, it only makes for one pleasantly unputdownable page-turner.

Moreover, as I read this book, I could vividly imagine it unfolding in front of my eyes, as if I was watching this on screen, and this is one story I truly wish gets adapted by Bollywood, because it’s that awesome!

My only complaint with the author is that she doesn’t write nearly enough books. I want more! But on the other hand, if the final product is like Jugnu, it’s completely worth the wait.

Disclaimer: I have beta read this book last year, but as many of you know, that doesn’t impact my rating or my review, as I have even given 3 stars to books that I have beta read in the past. Also I was given a review copy of the finished product by the author in exchange of an honest review.

Jugnu by Ruchi Singh is her latest offering and a book that takes us to the lovely hill station of Kasauli. This is the story of Zayd and Ashima, two souls scarred by their traumatic pasts who are brought together by destiny and love.

I enjoy Ruchi Singh's writing style and had thoroughly enjoyed her previous book, Take 2. So when she offered her latest to me to read and review, I just could not resist despite my huge load of pending books.

This book's intriguing title is the first thing that will attract a reader's attention. The blurb is also interesting and had me eagerly awaiting the arrival of the book.

The high and shining aspect of Jugnu (meaning Firefly) by Ruchi Singh that makes it a memorable story is the expertly done characterisation. The plot felt known to me but still the distinctive story telling style and the admirable way in which the author developed her characters, had me glued to my seat and turning the pages eagerly until the very end.

Zayd is in Kasauli for a new start but his past mistakes follow him here too. Ashima is struggling with too many responsibilities and a heart shattering loss that she balances with a love powered hope. Both have faced too much tragedy and too much loss in their lives. I loved how Ashima portrayed the dutiful Indian wife, mother and daughter-in-law who sacrifices her happiness for the sake of her family and revels in their contentment.

Social problems lik the religion divide, societal pressure, corruption, power politics etc. are also given place beautifully in this book and the author's message of love conquers all is very effectively conveyed. Kudos to her for a story that makes the readers' think, ponder and be inspired to make a positive change in their attitude.

I loved and enjoyed Zayd and Ashima's characters and felt connected to them. Ashima's son won my heart with his sweet baby antics.

The romance is expertly balanced with emotional play and had me feeling each and every change in their emotions as if they were my own.

The mystery of the title also gets solved in the story and I loved how the author connected firefly to the story.

All in all, Jugnu by Ruchi Singh is a stellar romance from the author that easily makes a place in our hearts with its fluid narration, realistic characterisation and a well executed plot that sucks the readers in the story. The anguish, love and loss of the characters is realistically portrayed and justified and had me rooting for a happily-ever-after for them.

4.5 out of 5 stars to Jugnu from me and strongly recommended to everyone. I loved this book and look forward to reading more from the author in the future.

I received the book from the author and I am very thankful to her. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

I barely registered the rain or the fact that my dog had come and settled on the bed besides me as I read the book. I was lost in Kasauli. Ruchi Singh has a wonderful way of describing places that is more poetic than prose. I could see the mountains and the sun shining through the trees. I could smell the fresh air. As I said I was lost in the book from the first page itself.

The characters are portrayed brilliantly. I half expected them to come right out of the pages and talk to me. Not just Zayd and Ashima but all the supporting characters as well. Each one of them exhibits a plethora of emotions that you can relate to and empathise with.

Ashima is a single mom… no, she is a single daughter in law, a single bhabhi as well, and the sole bread earner. Her weariness, her loneliness, the conventions that bind and hold her back, Her helpless acceptance of her responsibilities , her anguish of not knowing the fate of her husband who is missing in action in the Kargil war, the endless waiting, the flickering of hope against hope, are what make Jugnu a book that is a class apart.

Zayd, having faced death in all its gruesomeness at an early age, is mature beyond his years. He fights with his demons and forges his own identity. Out on parole all he wants is peace but finds someone who steals his heart instead.

Ruchi has brought out the discrimination faced by Muslims in India in the book, but she deals with it in a very matter of fact manner. She doesn’t make a hue and cry about it. I liked the fact that she doesn’t get preachy yet brings home her point.

I think this one definitely deserves 5 stars.

When I first read the excerpt of Jugnu, I was startled to note that the author had jumped right into a set of seemingly unsurmountable challenges: a convict-hero out on parole, a widow who refuses to be widowed, her young child, an unforgiving, racist mother-in-law, and a snatch of evil villains. How on earth is she going to sort everything out, I wondered?

Well, she did it! She picked a scenic locale, Kasauli, to amp up the romantic atmosphere; then added a heavy dose of chemistry that drew the main characters together willy nilly; and finally threw in some nefarious villainy that prompted our hero to become the knight in shining armor - and, happily, everything fell into place.

A fast read; plausible plot; great characterization!

Love story with a difference.. Liked the contrast between characters..so different but yet so same

Liked the characters their difficult lives but yet their zest to live a happy life with responsibility...I liked the religion contrast as people try to discriminate only because of cast...Love is love irrespective of which religion it belongs!!!

Read the novel in a single session. It is so engaging that once I picked it up I simply could not put it down till I reached the end.

Ruchi Singh has etched out the characters in this novel so vividly that you completely fall in love with them. The emotions are captured beautifully and draws you in and keeps you invested in the story.

The story has a 'happily ever after' ending with all the twists and turns of events and emotions in between. I love this novel!

This is another well crafted love story by Ruchi Singh.

I loved this refreshing, poignant and well written story.

Ashima and Zayd, both are battling with their bitter past. They meet and gradually become each other's solace.

But they have many things that come in between them. Did their love stand a chance when pitted against the barriers put forth by faith, morals, fate and insecurities?

Ruchi's writing is vivid and the characters come alive in the pages of the book, endearing themselves to the reader.

Recommended to all those who love a well written romance.

In our society, a person’s character is determined by his/her religion. Muslims are always looked down with a hint of suspicion and if anyone falls in love with a Muslim boy/girl then…

Jugnu is a firefly which glows in dark. Usually title of a book is based either or any of the protagonist or on the theme/plot of the story. But in this case, I wondered what the relation of a firefly with the story is? I kept reading to know the relation of Jugnu with a love story, but when I finally found the answer I was speechless. Ruchi Singh, the author of Jugnu, has given a unique title to such a unique love story.

This is the first book of author’s which I have read and I must say I absolutely loved it. Ruchi knows how to write a romantic suspense and keep the reader hooked till the end. Usually all the love stories are more or less of same format; boy and girl meet, fall in love, initial hiccups from family and all and then lived happily ever after kind of story… but not this one.

Jugnu has right blend of romance and suspense with dash of relationships and not to forget religion as backdrop.

Zayd, who had a difficult past, comes to Kasauli to overcome his past demons and start afresh. He is unknowingly attracted to Aashima, the owner of the guest house in which he stays. She, herself is fighting her demons, and trying to let go her past and accept her present for her bright future.

Jugnu is a fast paced, romantic yet touching love story with mysterious touch. Characters are well developed, plot too well written.

This is the first book I am reading by author Ruchi Singh, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The title is unique and the blurb hints at a difficult romance. The book is also unusual in that, most romances don’t start off with what looks like an obstacles strewn plot. But the amazing characterization of the undeniably attractive, hazel-eyed Zayd and the demure Ashima drew me right into the heart of the story. The scenic beauty of Kasauli and its serenity subtly shines throughout. As the book progressed I was drawn more and more into it, fretting about the perils, smiling over the brilliant chemistry, anticipating more drama, all the while pining for the two beautiful people to unite. I did wonder why the author chose to portray Zayd as one so young but the strong chemistry they share brushed away any further thought on it. The fact that the lead pair belongs to different religions could have resulted in some tension but the plot is handled very realistically and plays out well. Jugnu is a feel good book with oodles of passion, good language and great flow.

I rate romance novels on these 5 criteria:

1. Was it a fast read- yes it was. So fast that i finished it in a day. Bonus that it was an easy read too. It was flowing so smoothly that i had a hard time putting it away.
2. Were the character well etched and realistic- yes they were. A huge thumbs up to Ruchi for that. Very well described and plenty of background information made it easy to relate to all characters.
3. Was it romantic and believable- yes. It was a subtle romance which was apt for this story line. Throughout the story, i believed this happens in real life too.
4. Was the story unique or different than most- This is where i cudnt bring myself to give another star to this book. I have heard, read or seen this kind of story in indian scenario a lot of times. I did not feel wowed after reading this story.
5. Will i read this book again- it was a good one time read but i wudnt want to pick it up again.

Jugnu - The Firefly: A Millionaire Romance by Ruchi Singh
Jugnu is a firefly which glows in dark. Usually title of a book is based either or any of the protagonist or on the theme/plot of the story. But in this case, I wondered what the relation of a firefly with the story is? I kept reading to know the relation of Jugnu with a love story, but when I finally found the answer I was speechless.
The protagonists, Zayd and Ashima, tug at your heartstrings with their poignant past. Rishabh is a sweetheart who in a very subtle way helps bring these two broken yet strong souls together.
I recommend this book to all lovers of romance. It is a well-balanced book, sweet, cute, introspective, and hot where it was supposed to be. Things I loved in #Jugnu…..

Life always gives a second chance and one should accept it with open hands. Jugnu by Ruchi Singh is also an emotional roller coaster ride of two people who lost their first love in tragic incident. In the awesome hill town of Kausali the two people meet and their relationships blossoms amid so much constraints. I loved the way the author had touched each aspect a woman goes through before taking the plunge.

The character of Ashima, a mother, a daughter-in-law, a manager, a wife has been portrayed so naturally. Even Zayad's character will make you fall in love.

Recommend for all romance readers who are looking for a second chance in life.

Pulling your heart strings!!!
A very different love story, yes ‘love story’, I like to term this book a ‘love story’ instead of romance. Instead of an alpha male as normal in romances here we have a very young man out on a parole, running from his past and trying to find his solace in writing. And a woman who is stuck in a space where she is struggling without an answer about her past. Amidst all this is the small fluttering heart unaware of all the turmoil’s around him. The moments in this book is so heart touching. It’s not a breezy romance, but it’s deeper.

Book:- Jugnu The Firefly
Author:- Ruchi Singh
Format:- Kindle
Rating:- ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

"Jugnu” authored by Ruchi Singh is the book scribbling beautiful emotions of love, loss, and strength to move on.
This is a romantic novel with sweet love story getting transformed to mysterious plot.

Ashima and Zayd are the protagonists of the storyline. Ashima is a single-handed mother, searching for her husband who is missing. She's living with a hope of her husband returning to her some day.

For me this book is one of the best books in the fantasy until date. Author
really created a very beautiful story.

By seeing the book blurb and cover I imagined a story but this is quite opposite to it.

This story is centered around a little boy Sarja who is 11 years old. He lives in a village where he has a very tough social life because of his father who is a robber and was in prison from several years.

To know what happens with this boy you must read this book.

Loved the chemistry between Zayd and Ashima in the perfectly romantic setting of a hill town called Kasauli.
The bonding between Zayd and Ashima's son, Rishabh, was portrayed beautifully. Ashima's loss was palpable throughout the story. It was evident that the final choices both the main characters had to make were difficult but it was a huge relief to see them face their demons with courage and faith. Last, but not the least, loved the title of this book. Jugnu was an enjoyable breezy read!

This is a well crafted story, written beautifully. The characters are not stereotypical and you find yourself slowly drawn into their lives. Great setting and situations. Was reminded of Anuja Chauhan's books. I'd love to read a prequel!

Well written story

The wave of emotions experienced by both the main characters are very well depicted. A very emotional and touchy story.
