I really enjoyed this book — even more than the previous one in the series. I already had high expectations for this romantic couple’s story, and fortunately, it did not disappoint. As is typical in this genre, the plot brought its challenges, but it all led to a happy ending that left me with a light heart.

My Darling, My Disaster 4.5'My Darling, My Disaster' by Amalie Howard is book Two in the "Lords of Essex" series.  This is the story of Princess Svetlanka Volkonsky aka 'Lana' and Lord Graham Findlay, Viscount Northridge 'Gray'.  This book can be a standalone book but if you have read the first book "My Rogue, My Ruin" then you will see some of the same scene in this book...these book coincide.  Svetlanka is a Princes and she overheard her Uncle reporting that he would be killing Svetlanka and her sister.  So Svetlanka  and her sister went on the run and now Svetlanka is posing as Lana a Ladies maid to Gray's sister.  Svetlanka has to stay undercover until there is evidence that her Uncle did kill his brother and now means to kill them.   Gray has his own secrets that he doesn't want anyone to know about that has made him swore off women for a while.  But Svetlanka 'Lana' and him are butting heads and Gray knows there is something more to Svetlanka than she is letting on.  Enjoyed reading this book!  "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read." https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1...  https://www.amazon.com/gp/profile/A2H... https://twitter.com/soapsrus68https:/... https://www.tumblr.com/blog/romancebo...

Gray has left his rakish days behind him. He hasn't been with a woman in years and he's carefully put walls around his heart. His sister Briannon has a new lady's maid, Lana, and Gray can't help himself when he's around her. He's never experienced anything like what he's feeling for her, but Lana isn't easy to conquer. She has many secrets and keeps him at a distance. Gray has something to hide as well, but nothing compared to what Lana is keeping from him and everyone else around her. Will he ever discover what's bothering the woman of his dreams and why she leaves the house by herself at night?

Lana is a Russian princess, but she's on the run. She found out she and her sister Irina were about to be murdered and they managed to escape just in time. The danger isn't over yet and that's why she sisters aren't staying together and to keep a low profile Lana is now working as Briannon's lady's maid. It's an inconspicuous position and together with an ally Lana is trying to uncover the truth and expose the people who are after her as traitors. Will she manage to do this or will they find her before she's been able to find her proof?

My Darling, My Disaster is a gripping romantic story with many intriguing twists and turns. Gray is chivalrous, passionate and impulsive. He's done some things he isn't proud of, but he's changed his ways. He's a protective man and he desperately wants to keep both Lana and his sister safe. Lana works for Briannon, but as her employer has secrets of her own and places to go to unchaperoned Lana has plenty of chances to be alone with Gray. She's fierce and regal and she isn't afraid to stand up for herself, but he's a charming man and he melts her heart. They have plenty of chemistry and even though there are many obstacles in their way, they keep finding excuses to be together. Lana and Gray can't stay away from one another and I loved their strong connection. It doesn't matter what their position is in society or if they can't tell each other the truth, their love conquers all.

Amalie Howard and Angie Morgan kept me on the edge of my seat with a complex conspiracy, plenty of surprises and fascinating secrets. I loved both the mystery aspect of the story as well as the sexy romance. Lana doesn't need sparkling gowns, beautiful jewelry and a large number of servants to be recognized as a royal, it's her presence that makes her stand out. I loved the vivid descriptions of her personality. I also liked the combination of her pride and bravery and Gray's impudent, fearless nature. Together they're explosive and that's what I enjoyed the most about My Darling, My Disaster. I really liked this action-packed, enchanting and captivating story.

More Reviews Here: Readers Live A Thousand Lives

I don't read historical romances all that often, but when I do I always tend to enjoy them and such was the case with My Darling, My Disaster. When I read My Rogue, My Ruin I really enjoyed it, but with My Darling, My Disaster these authors really hit their stride. I ADORED this book from beginning to end.

Both Gray and Lana are great characters. Of course I loved Gray. He is so charming and swoony and is such a good guy. It's very easy to love him. But Lana was my favorite. She is so fesity and strong and I loved her. For a princess in hiding, she handles it well. She doesn't shy away from hard work or from doing what she has to do to keep herself and her sister safe. But she also doesn't sit around waiting to be saved. She takes risks and makes sacrifices to save those she loves. And her and Gray together are fantastic. They have so much chemistry; it seeps off the pages.

Aside from the romance though, I also loved the bit of action throw in. Lana is in hiding and I was constantly worried she would be found. And when everything goes crazy the story is intense. The end of this book had me on the edge of my seat. I loved this balance to the story. I also loved that the story ran parallel to My Rogue, My Ruin. It was fun to see that storyline play out from an outside perspective.

My Darling, My Disaster was a really great read and one I truly enjoyed. I look forward to more stories in the Lords of Essex series.

I enjoyed My Darling, My Disaster and I would recommend this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between Lana and Gray, and I stayed up reading until 4am to finish their story. The plot was lovely, and the characters well developed. Lana was brave, self-assured, and not a push over, which I really liked. Gray was honorable, charming, though a bit too jealous for me at times, he was still very likable. Lana and Gray meshed together wonderfully, their attraction and eventual surrender to the passion between them was sweet, sensual and heartfelt. I am now eager to read book one, My Rogue, My Ruin.

I received this book from the Publisher for an honest review.

'My Darling, My Disaster' is the second book in Amalie Howard and Angie Morgan's series 'Lords of Essex'.
From my experience of having not read the first book in the series, 'My Darling, My Disaster' can be read as a standalone even though it seems as if the first book in the series, 'My Rouge, My Ruin's' story arc is coinciding with 'My Darling, My Disaster's. You don't get to much of the details of what happened in the first book though it still is pretty spoiler heavy in terms of the conclusion of the first book etc.

Princess Svetlanka Volkonsky (Lana) and her younger sister are Russian Princesses who have ran away to England to hide from their devious Uncle who has killed their parents and plans to wreak even more misery upon the two princesses. Lana assumes the role of a lady's maid to Lady Briannon Findlay while her sister is placed into hiding in a country estate of a trusted confidante.
A stash of horribly written sonnets and letters hidden by Lana's father and spirited away to England with the princesses are their only hope of uncovering their Uncle’s long suspected treasonous activities and being able to return home to Russia.

Lord Graham Findlay (Gray), Viscount Northridge is not too impressed by his sister's new ladies maid who doesn't seem like a ladies maid at all but can't stop himself being completely bewitched by Lana regardless of her less than perfect maid's skills/manner. Try as he might, knowing it's wrong to start an affair with his Sister's ladies maid and also hiding a scandalous secret of his own, Gray can't seem to stay away from Lana, wanting to know her secrets and help her in anyway he can.

I really enjoyed 'My Darling, My Disaster'! I'm always a sucker for who couples who start off disliking each other but gradually fall in love so this was just the thing for me. Gray and Lana play off one another really well and in every scene they have together there is instant chemistry.
Lana really is bad at being a maid but come on, she is a princess and was never made to do servants work ever in her life. She seems to 'stay in a servants' place for her encounters with most of the Findley family except for Briannon (as her maid and companion) and of course, Gray who she can't seem to keep her temper around.
Gray...Oh Gray. He really is a sweetheart. A sweetheart with a raging boner every time a certain maid is around but a sweetheart none the less. But what can you expect the man has been celibate for a bit over 3 years. I really loved his interactions with his 'scandalous secret' and just how sweet he is in general. That said he can be a bit of an idiot like in one scene where he gets super hammered at his sister engagement party and stupidity ensues-this was a bit OOC for me but it was one of those 'necessary' things to keep the story going.
All in all the story was intriguing, I thoroughly enjoyed the romance and characters and I actually want to read the first book in the series to find out what exactly was happening there.

A SOLID 3.5 STARS!

I WAS A LITTLE LET DOWN BY THIS STORY. I EXPECTED SOMETHING MORE FROM GRAY'S CHARACTER - perhaps a little bit more arrogant or flighty judging how he has a daughter by his mistress, I EXPECTED SOME FORM OF ANGST BUT THIS WAS ALL VERY SWEET AND WELL, TOO SMOOTH FOR ME.

OUR HEROINE is the brother of Lady Brynn, the new Duchess of Bradburne and also the father of his illegitimate daughter he keeps with a couple who couldn't have children. He loves Sophia to death, but because of society's restrictions and rules...he's not allowed to keep her with him WITHOUT being married or risk to incur a scandal. Because of Sophia, he vowed to abstain from sex and has gone without for 3 years until Lana. There is infinitely something queer about his sister's new lady's maid. She's too bold, too educated and her minor slips of characters so unlike a maid had him a little suspicious, although he chose to close a blind eye on them. One thing was for sure, the beautiful stubborn creature was wrecking havoc on his heart AND she has a hidden secret. As he delves deeper into her problems, he finds himself caught up in something that threatens her life and possibly his family. Gray is SURPRISINGLY very responsible and a gentleman to a T. He's so nice and sweet, you can't help but adore him BUT you also wish he was a little less perfect. You can see how devoted he is to win Lana's love and perhaps a tad clingy.

OUR HEROINE is the runaway Princess, with her sister Irina both on the run from their uncle who is out to kill them for their fortune. Disguised as a lady's maid, she works for Gray's sister and hopes to find a solution to her problem, while waiting for their ally Lord Langlevit to find a cryptographer who can unravel a coded message that can finally stop her uncle's devious plans. Lana didn't expect to fall in love with a lord of the realm, one who is so kind, loving and devoted to both his family and daughter, even to her. How on Earth can she shield him from her enemies and at the same time solve her own dilemma?

OVERALL this was a rather easy and more predictable read, and yes a little less exciting than the other two stories. But still, it was an enjoyable story, just wished it had the angst that came with a Playboy's proclivity. The authors did MENTION Gray's sexual escapades in the past, but it was just so contradicting from his current characteristic that it made the hype a little bland.

My Darling, My Disaster was an absolutely wonderful romance with great characters and a story that really pulls you in.

Princess Svetlanka Volkonsky escaped with her sister Irina after discovering a plot to kill them and steal their inheritance. Now in hiding as a lady’s maid, she’s constantly in fear of her past catching up with her and her secret identity being revealed. She certainly doesn’t have time to deal with Viscount Northridge Graham Findlay, or the feelings he rouses in her. However, soon they find themselves caught up in each other’s secrets and must decide how far they’ll go for the love neither of them expected.

Lana was one of the characters that intrigued me the most in the first book, so I was excited that book two was her story. She’s a very strong person and I admired her courage in getting herself and her sister to safety despite the fact it meant leaving the only home they’d ever known. I loved her devotion to her sister Irina and her friendship with Brynn (the main character from My Rogue, My Ruin).

Gray took a bit more for me to warm up to him, but I did ultimately like him. He has a deep sense of right and wrong and tries to always do the honorable thing. He’s incredibly devoted to his sister and does everything he can to help her experience the things their parents try to restrict her from due to her childhood illness and the issues she still experiences with her lungs.

Lana and Gray’s relationship is definitely more of a slow burn, but I really enjoyed watching them slowly fall for each other. There are trust issues on both sides and I enjoy that the authors took the time for the characters to work through them. The physical side of their relationship does start off fairly slowly as well, but was very enjoyable.

I really enjoyed the storyline of the traitors plotting against Lana and her sister. The authors did a great job with the suspense of when they’d be found out and how everything would unfold. I also liked how they managed to tie Gray’s secret to Lana’s which definitely helped keep things moving at a good pace.

My Darling, My Disaster takes place in part during the same time as the first Lords of Essex book, My Rogue, My Ruin. While there were some scenes that were the same, the story didn’t get too repetitive and flowed nicely. Also, while the scenes themselves were the same, you get a different perspective as this book follows different characters. I think even if you haven’t read the first book, you’d be fine jumping right into this book as it highlights the main events of the first book pretty well.

Overall, My Darling, My Disaster was a very enjoyable read with excellent characters and I’m excited to get to book three, My Hellion, My Heart.

I must remark that I have to go back and read My Rogue, My Ruin, I am in love with the enchanting characters. The fantasy historical world of romance, royal, nobility, secrets, past, danger, and mystery. The characters are charming, intriguing, strong willed, self-assured, intelligent, crafty, and bit more of what I like and don’t like at times.

There was a princess. A real and true princess. But she was not the one being pampered. She was the one doing the work and given lots of sass. Lana was a princess that knew about life, good and bad. She had to make do to make it. She was not beneath the task given her to survive and see that her uncle pays and she and her sister live. But she was not counting on the lord of the manor to be so specious of her. Lord Graham had things he wanted to keep hidden so he knew a thing or two about someone hiding things. This Lana person. She had something she was hiding and Graham was determined to find out what it was.

This read was one filled with twist and turns for a historical romantic suspense with secrets, lies, murder plots, strong wills, and stubborn lady’s maid. This was a fascinating suspense with much conspiracy and a bit of sexiness wrapped with nobility and royalty.

I love Lana. Gray had his moments of success also. He loved his sister and wanted no harm to come to her. There was also something about the lady’s maid that had him wanting more from her also. She was feisty, regal, strong-willed, self-assured, alluring, captivating and he knew there is more to her than what she presents.

Howard and Morgan gave me a historical romance that had me turning pages and wanting so much more. I want to know the other stories that run alongside this one. I want to know what happens to Lana and Graham’s sisters. I want more of the Lords of Essex.

Princess Svetlanka Volkonsky is hiding from her uncle who murdered her parents. She fled to England, and is working as a maid. The man who helped her and her sister escape is trying to find the proof they need that her uncle is a traitor.
Lord Graham Findlay, Viscount Northridge is not happy about his sister's new relationship. He is hiding a secret of his own, but knows his sister's new maid is also hiding something. That must be why he can't stop watching her.
This is the second book in the series but easily read as a stand alone. It is actually set in the same time line as book one, so if like me you have read that, some scenes are familiar but seen from a different perspective.
There is a lot if excitement, intrigue, danger and some hot sexy scenes.
I loved it.

My Thoughts:
This well written story is the second I have read by this newly formed writing duo.
Our heroine is a Russian Princess hiding from an uncle who wishes her dead and fully intends to carry out the deed. She is secretly hiding in England under a new identity as the lady's maid of our hero's sister
Our hero is a very virile young Viscount who is also hiding a secret. His rakish past has made him the unwitting father of a little girl who he has to this time successfully hidden.
Our hero and heroine take an instant dislike for each other but both hold an attraction for the other that will eventually bring them together.
Can these two find their Happily Ever After? Can their secrets and their pasts destroy this newly burgeoning love?
This book is a true page turner. I was captivated from the first chapter by the progressing attraction between these two adversaries.
It is impossible to discern one author's writing from that of the other. They have truly complimented each other in this work.
I look forward to more from this duo of authors.
I gave this book 4.25 of 5 stars for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 4 of 5 flames.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher to read via NetGalley. This in no way affected my opinion of this title and I have voluntarily left this review.

Princess Svetlanka Volkonsky (Lana) is a Russian princess who runs off to England to escape a dastardly uncle intent on selling her off to gain her inheritance and then kill her; after engineering her parent’s death in an accident. Lana assumes the role of a lady’s maid with the help of a trusted English Earl confidante of her father’s while her beloved younger sister seeks refuge with the Earl’s mother in the country. A stash of strange correspondence and letters found secreted away by her father is her one hope of uncovering her Uncle’s long suspected treasonous activities and being able to return home safely.

I found it hard to believe that Lana could convincing as a servant having been brought up a princess with a mass of servants at her beck and call. I also found it unnecessary for the author to keep reminding us that Gray had been celibate by choice (admirable as that was) for several years and seemed constantly in a state of semi arousal (roll eyes).

Nevertheless the book is absorbing. It took a bit for me to warm to both characters at first. Lana is rather arrogant & rude & totally unmaid-like at the beginning towards Gray. I honestly don't think anyone intelligent in those circumstances would have behaved the way she did but both developed very nicely. Lana is dedicated to protecting her sister and I liked that while she did for a moment consider seducing Gray as a means to distract him; it was just that – an option that she never seriously considered.

Gray finds himself bewitched by his sister’s beautiful, regal lady’s maid. A relationship that he knows cannot end well with the disparity of their positions which makes him ponder on the behavior that people are forced into for the sake of appearances.

There were a few gaps and uneven patches in the story (an odd scene that seemed to start from nowhere, where Gray gets drunk for no apparent reason seemed out of character); a side plot about a masked marauder that is totally mystifying but Lana & Gray's story is still well done.

Read this and My Rogue, My Ruin in tandem because they cover the same events. It's fun to read Brin and Archer's point of view and then get Lana and Grey's plus additional background. Lord and Lady Dinsmore's children have had a most exciting couple of weeks. Highwaymen, a Russian princess masquerading as a maid, murder, an evil Russian count and of course lots of steamy stolen moments, the list goes on and on.

Review/Notes
A bit of a slower "romantic suspense" plot in that there wasn't any real mystery, just the h trying to stay hidden to avoid her corrupt uncle who wants to kill her. However, while the plot was a definitely simpler than the first in the series, Lana & Graham were great together and overall, it felt like it was better written. Not a huge fan of how this ran parallel to the first, rather than taking place after. Still an enjoyable read overall.

I absolutely hated the first approximately 25% of this book. And I was fully prepared to write off Amalie Howard.

Let's start with the fact that Howard does not know how to write a hate to love romance. I've read two other books of hers and it was the same in them too. The two main characters "hated" each other for like 1 chapter, and then immediately started kissing and revealing secrets to each other. Like if you want them to get together so quickly just don't even try to make it an enemies to lovers situation.

Also Grey annoyed me throughout the book. And he was dumb. So very very dumb.

Also, this might just be an issue with me, but I didn't like how this story was taking place at the exact same time as book 1 in this series. It covers all of the main plot points from the first book, just from a different perspective. But I didn't find it interesting at all, just boring because I knew exactly what was going to happen.

Eventually, by the half way point, I was enjoying myself. The pacing was still a bit off, but it was fun and I could get into it from then.

I really liked the first book in this series, because the plot was so intriguing, as it was a romance combined with a mystery. The plot of this book, the second in the series, wasn't quite as interesting in my opinion as it held pretty closely to the typical romance pattern of heroine in disguise as servant, then falls for the master, and it didn't have a mystery to solve like the first book did. However, the book was still well written, and the way the passionate tension evolves between Gray (Lord Graham Findlay) and Lana still kept my interest. I also enjoyed how the timeline of this story overlapped that of the first book, so you can see how much of the story you were missing just viewing everything from one set of point of views in each book. Initially, I didn't like the Gray character as he seemed very consumed with what was going on within himself, but as the authors continued the book you got to see the other people in his life that he cared about and that his internal restraint didn't consume his life entirely. I would be curious to see what story would be told next in this universe/series.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book exchange for an honest review.

Well, what can I say? This one was utterly perfect. I am trying not to give five stars that much as a rule usually but with this one, it wouldn't do as it so deserved it in my opinion.
I loved Gray, a lot, I already liked him in the previous book but he just shines in this one. I also liked Lana a lot, and I was completely entranced by her story and struggles. This story felt passionately interesting and somewhat refreshing to me even though I sure many books have used similar plots and tropes. But this one did it for me. Big time.

There is, I think, two sex scenes in the whole book but the anticipation and restraint the main hero suffers all through it makes this book pretty hot. They still managed to stay very 'proper' if I may say so, not so much graphic in my opinion.

I hope you will enjoy this one as much as I did.

Having inhaled My Rogue, My Ruin, I immediately bought books 2 & 3. My Darling, My Disaster was another really enjoyable historical romance. I like that the timeline takes place at the same time as that of My Rogue, My Ruin-- it was cool to catch up with Brynn and Archer as Gray & Lana's story played out. I really enjoyed Gray's story and his struggle with falling for his sister's maid, and I loved the lengths that Lana goes to in order to keep her sister safe. Morgan and Howard do a great job with complex characters, and I love that the heroines are all feisty women who can hold their own against the men, especially in this time period. Looking forward to more books written by this duo! (And now on to review Book 3!).

This was so fun because it happened concurrently with the events of My Rogue, My Ruin but from a different set of characters' point of view. I would say I enjoyed this even a bit more than the first one since there were more plot twists that were happening. The chemistry between the couple was very well done and I liked how they explored the power dynamics and societal pressures. I am excited to read the final book of the trilogy because I want to see the motivations behind Henry's character.

Boring boring boring for the 1st 2/3rd of the book as it is a recounting of the first book in the series from a slightly different POV. When the Russians become an actual threat, versus a vague threat, the book picks up and becomes more interesting. I'm glad I read to the end, but it was almost a DNF.

This book was good, but there was a lot going on. A couple of princesses in hiding, highwaymen and bandits, murders, a secret by-blow, a bullying housekeeper, and kidnappings.
