After seeing all of my 8 year old daughter's "Thea Stilton" my four year old was excited to learn that there were books about a boy mouse. I read this to my son over the course of several nights. While much of the book is over the head (and attention span) of a four year old, he found the majority of it to be quite amusing.

I generally do not fault children's books for their plots. In this one, Geronimo Stilton, a self-proclaimed "bookmouse", is secreted away by two friends and, without this knowledge, entered into the world karate championship. Our course, he had no previous experience and only had one week to master the discipline. Pretty silly stuff but the silliness made it all the more enjoyable.

My grade 3 daughter enjoys the female counterpart stories and with some dumbing down, younger kids can enjoy the unlikely adventures of Geronimo Stilton.

In this, number 40 of the series, Geronimo Stilton’s adventurous friends blindfold him and fly him off to Japan to learn Karate. After a mere 7 days he fights in the world championships! Geronimo proves that if we try really hard and put our mind to something anything is possible.

However after Geronimo finishes his last fight the book moves to deal with a serious issue in sport, performance enhancing substances. Even though it is an excellent idea to teach children that cheating is wrong and has serious consequences, I don’t think this topic gels well with the rest of the book. There are a lot of positives to take from the book though. For example, on every page the font and colour of several specific words is changed. In general I found this variation made the pages interesting and is a pleasant change from the usual solid blocks of black print. When you combine this with the colourful illustrations on almost every page I would recommend this book for a 7-9 year old reader, especially one who struggles with more traditionally illustrated books.

Possibly what impressed me most was how the story gradually introduces us to Japanese culture and language. For example, when they first go to the training center, we learn the Japanese for gym is ‘dojo’. Also at the end of the book the ‘ABC to karate’ gives the basics to Japanese, including the number 1-10. All in all an excellent book.

I being in brown belt know that karate isn't easy . it takes a lot of time and whole lot of practice to get one belt. looking at Geronimo in the cover doing karate shocked me because Geronimo (no offence)is a very lazy mouse and just wants to relax he gets dragged onto all sorts of adventures and mysteries. so in his book ,Bruce hyena signs Geronimo for a Karate Contest and bruce hyena calls his
cousin sister Shorty tao who is a pro at karate to teach Geronimo karate. the main reason i rated it a 3 was i think its very dumb that Geronimo learnt all the karate moves in a week. i being in karate and t took me yers to learn karate moves. to fight in karate isn't easy but in the book they made it look so much easier. My favourite character in this book is Baby tao because he is so cute and really strong. My favourite part was when Geronimo won because i thought it was very dumb and very dramatic.

One of the better GS books we’ve read so far, as Geronimo spent less time complaining about his bad luck and more actually gaining an appreciation for the situation his friend roped him into. As usual, the boys loved it.

Geronimo Stilton is not a sporty mouse. He's more of a book mouse, likes to relax and have some quiet time so,.... when his friends Bruce Hyena and Shorty Tao settled him on a plane to fly to a mysterious place that he didn't know of he felt panic. But when he found out that they were going to compete in the Karate World Championship, panic really came! Geronimo was no sporty mouse and he didn't know a thing about karate so how was he going to over come this challenge. He knew that his friends would help, but.... Read the book to find out what happens to Geronimo on this exciting adventure of the mighty sport karate.
I liked this book because of the colorful words and fun pictures. When you read you couldn't put it down because you knew that you were almost to the end and you had to know today what happened to Geronimo. The pictures were fun to look at because they had a lot of detail and a lot of things that you didn't notice the first time you looked but if you looked again you would see funny things that would make you smile and even sometimes laugh! I really liked this book.

This is the first Geronimo Stilton book that I have read. I have to admit that I never understood the appeal of these books and was a little baffled by why they are so popular. I think I was put off by how busy the pages are with side information and the words that are randomly highlighted in a different font. I tend to think less is more. I am clearly not the intended audience, however. After reading this book, I am pleasantly surprised. I can see how it engages young readers and makes the chapter book more accessible to those that are used to less text and more illustrations. It also introduces new vocabulary and concepts in a fun way. The story itself was also fun, entertaining, and helpful. I loved that it showed Geronimo so nervous and how he was able to deal with his nerves. I'm looking forward to reading a few more in this series.

Fun fact: they missed a sentence in an illustration (p. 52) when translating so you get to enjoy a bit of Italian in the French edition (or at least my copy)
