Three short stories that feature problem-prone Bertie are contained in this book, which will have high reader appeal for third graders. Many of them will find it easy to relate to his adventures while also being able to laugh because things never go quite the way he planned. In the stories he goes to great lengths to be exposed to his sister's chickenpox, sabotages the frontrunners at a dance contest with his grandmother, and makes quite a mess while becoming frightened to death of zombies while under the watch of a careless babysitter. All three stories are funny, and the black and white illustrations will make readers smile even more at the troubles that plague Bertie. Readers will also enjoy the twists at the end of each story.

For a beginning chapter-book reader, Dirty Bertie is a fun blend of silliness and gross-out humor. The chapters are very short and the language is very accessible for 2 graders and up. Personally, I found this book to be a bit hollow but I can easily see how it would appeal to a much younger audience.

I bought this to expand my books for boys and I'm so happy I did. Organized to support early readers - 3 stories with manageable chapters in each. Ordering more.
