Delightful! This was spontaneously narrated to me by my forever to learn to read 9 year old last night. She loved and recommended that I read it as well. I LOVE the fact that books bring everyone together in delight. Happiness especially appreciated the fact that this young lady LONGED to read like herself and prayed that she would have the opportunity just as this one prayed to finally get it. God is good! I devoured it this morning myself and had to agree that this thrift store find was a keeper! An inspiring story of perseverance and faith.
This is a simply written and simplified story of the life of Mary Macleod Bethune, appropriate for readers about 10 years and up. I don't remember ever having learned about Mary Bethune, who was born in 1875 and who made it her life's work to educate black children and work for racial equality. She sounds like an incredibly intelligent, articulate, and strong woman, someone who worked incredibly hard on many fronts all her life, an inspiration for many--if more people knew about her!
