Some Things He Wishes He'd Never Written and Now He Can't Escape Them
For the first time in memory, bestselling author Ian Merchant can't find even a single word to write. Recently rocked by a powerful spiritual encounter, he is torn by turmoil within and without. Everyone around him, including his wife, Rebecca, agrees that he's changed, but has he indeed become a "new creature"? How is he to build a life of faith when the sins of his past line the bookshelves of America?
As Ian struggles with his faith and his craft, frightening events begin to occur. Someone is shadowing his daily life—an ominous figure who seems to have emerged from the pages of one of Ian's own novels. As the danger mounts, Ian must stand for what he knows in his heart is true and confront the haunting remnant of a life he thought he'd buried.
This book had a huge impact on my life. I cannot recommend it enough.
It is funny that most of these reviews are negative, so I will acknowledge the negative aspects first. First of all, it isn't a thriller. It's like a classic, a book you can easily put down if you need to. Second of all, it's not your typical book. So it's not, probably, for the typical 21st-century reader who wants a quick, engaging read with romance and daring. It is for a reader who has the genuine desire for a heartfelt read with deep meaning and rhetorical devices that is brilliantly done.
It is at its heart the story of a man learning what it means to be transformed by God. The main character has already been saved, but he is trying to understand what it means to be saved, and how to resolve it with his old life. This is a story of a man who once celebrated death being transformed by life.
I felt like the book was written directly to me. For a Christian who was coming out of a spiritual valley, I was trying to understand what it meant to be a Christian. And this book so perfectly and beautifully encapsulates that journey. Like a mystery novel it builds up suspense. Yet at its heart it is a powerful work, one that leaves much to the reader's interpretation, that ushers you into the life and struggle of a man being transformed by God.
I wish I could write a better review, or give more than five stars. If you have the patience to read this, and if you are trying to understand better your spiritual walk, this just might be the book for you. Read it. You won't regret it.
2.5 stars--Christian fiction. Horror writer Ian becomes a Christian and can't write. He's being stalked. Parts of the story feel left out, and you don't find out other parts until the end (flow not so good). Some parts excellent, like the relationship with his wife, but others are stale. Not a great resolution in the end either.
good story but took a while to get there. He had so many things going on between faith, career issues, and the wife's drama it was just so many stories that didn't get enough attention. Glad I read it but never found it difficult to put down for other things.
It took me forever to read this book! I just couldn't get into it. The writing would be good, then disconnected, then good, but the ending left many things not resolved. It says that this was the author's 1st book.
I enjoyed this one although it seemed like there were still a heck of a lot of loose ends. It was an interesting story of finding and strengthening faith in stressful, creepy circumstances.
