The Spellbound Hotel

Rate this book
Strange things are happening in the village of Stagtree Knoll. Ever since Bethany's parents moved here they have developed an unhealthy obession for the local sausages. Not to mention the bizarra soap opera they watch every night without fail, a soap opera that seems to have hypnotised everyone in the village. Everyone except Bethany, that is. Determined to find out what's going on, she sneaks into the mysterious Stoames Mansion and discovers something very strange indeed: a hotel for ghosts, spirits and non-material beings. But Bethany is not a welcome guest here and if she hopes to escape and save her parents, she must face the sinister power at the heart of the hotel, and break the spell it has cast over everyone.

A tough one to rate. It took me a bit to get into but I think that was more me than the book.... I'm not too sure. Parts of this I enjoyed but there were parts, well, one part in particular that I felt was odd and just gross but that's my germ phobia meeting my Autistic sensory dislikes. The tounge. Yeah. The thing in people's mouths..... the storyline around that....just eww and also..... Why!?

Anyway I won't go now into it due to spoilers. The idea of the story was good and while this is aimed for middle grade readers, I think it's going to be more so aimed at the younger side of them.

The characters were, for the most part, ok. I liked some more than others but didn't hate anyone. The best part of this book I think would have been when we got told the story behind the hotel and how it came to be. That's where the author's true talent came out and it was something I found myself getting into. So that saved this book.

I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't rush out and read it again. I probably won't re read unless I'm bored but as a quick inbetween, light, book, it's a good one to pick up. Just don't expect a lot. Though I will say I have a feeling I might be a bit too harsh saying this. There was a decent amount happening, it just wasn't a strong connection with me.

That said, I would give this author another try.

I liked it a lot because it reminded me of Alice in Wonderland! How a girl must make an adventure to discover a secret world inside a strange magical hotel. It is very entertaining!

Again another bedtime story, really quite dark but I enjoyed it. The characters were really engaging and it was quite sad at the end.
