Two men starting over, and the discovery that could shatter their worlds.

Artist and antiquities expert Cole Hadley is in a good place. Assistant Cultural Attaché to the US Embassy, Cairo, he’s over his divorce, rebuilding his confidence after years of fat-shaming and misery and checking off the first of his bucket-list items, SCUBA diving in the Red Sea.

Hank Ashton, bearded, built, the best—and meanest—divemaster on the Sea, is stranded in the dying town of Al’Shahin. He owes a local gangster a pile of money and is stuck teaching basic classes at a failing hotel to pay the debt, the dream of his own dive shop slipping further away every year.

Cole’s joy and wonder at Hank’s world cracks his carefully constructed shell, forcing him to realize how lucky he is. In turn, Hank’s lust for Cole’s body and care for his happiness go miles toward healing Cole’s bruised heart. Their shared passion for the marvels of the undersea world spills over into a sizzling affair…one they both know has an expiration date.

Until, in exploring the sea, they make the discovery of the century, one that could change both their lives. But their very different plans reveal just how little they know each other. Cole and Hank have to decide exactly what’s important to them and be brave enough to get it, if they’re to have any hope of resurfacing together.

This was a really great read! I enjoyed it from start to finish.
I really loved the grumpy and sunshine vibes this had and how loveable the characters were. This has representation we really don’t see much in MM books or with queer characters in general so It earned a point for that alone.
The characters are some of the best I have met in the adult MM books I have read In the past. There is good character development and the plot is still there throughout.
My favourite thing about this story was that the conflict was done well and I enjoyed that the characters were adults about it and it got resolved quickly and they were able to just talk to each other and didn’t have a bunch of cliche misunderstandings. The spice here was great as well to boot.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a MM book with fat representation that is dealt with in a realistic light.

I was blown away by this outstanding love story between two older men who find that one week is more than enough to cement a foundation for a relationship that just might last forever. But—and it’s a big but—Hank has to face his past and give Cole the 100 percent honesty that Cole gives him before either man can proceed to commit to a future they each never believed they’d see.

The author portrayed both characters as very real, and flawed, but memorable. The atmosphere of the geographic area, Hank’s work as a diving instructor, and Cole’s thrill at the world he discovers on their dives in the Red Sea were all painted so clearly and beautifully that, even if I were given a video to watch, my appreciation of the story couldn’t possibly be any better.

Hank is a grumpy dive instructor working for a hotel dive shop to earn enough each week to make payments on his debt to a local gangster. When Cole shows up to complete his diving certification, Hank’s life changes. The “grumpy grouper,” as Cole calls him, comes face-to-face with the most cheerful, gregarious “teddy bear” he’s ever met. All his life, Cole has been shamed for being overweight, so he finds it hard to believe that Hank actually wants him in all his chubby glory. These two older men make a wonderful pair that made my inner romantic heart beat faster as every scene unfolded.

The descriptions of the underwater world, often told in Cole’s artistic POV, coupled with their growing attraction kept me hooked right from the beginning. And, although at first I thought I might not warm to Hank, once his hidden qualities were discovered and brought forth by Cole (who I loved from page one!), I began to root for him and to cheer the couple through the difficult minefield of emotions they faced toward the end of the story when they discovered something very important. They fought and failed to communicate just as Cole’s vacation time was nearly over. Did they overcome this painful hurdle? Not easily but… You must read to find out.

Believe me, this is not just a romance—it’s an excursion to the Middle East, a trip below the surface of the Red Sea, and a heartwarming portrait of dreams that can come true. Very highly recommended.

Note: I received an ARC copy. My review is totally my own honest appraisal of the story.

Cole Hadley comes to Al'Shahin ready for the experience of a lifetime. He's gone through a rough patch, but he's ready to put it behind him and get his diving certification. Despite the pointed looks and remarks about his size, he's determined to make this an enjoyable vacation.

Hank Ashton is the grumpy divemaster at Al'Shahin. Hank has had a rough past with bad choices that have put him in the situation that he's in now. The dream that once felt within his grasp is now quickly slipping away due to the lingering debt hanging over his head. The stern older man will have to learn to reel in his brooding personality before it gets him even more trouble.

Cole's bubbly personality is the exact opposite of Hank's, but Hank can't deny his attraction right away. He convinces Cole to take private lessons with him, and the two men find out there is a spark between them. However, they both know that it can't go anywhere, with Hank's past threatening to rear its ugly head and Cole returning to Cairo in just two short weeks. Cole and Hank make the discovery of a lifetime on one of their dives, but they soon learn that they are more different than they initially thought.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. Grumpy/sunshine is one of my favorite tropes, so I was instantly sold when I read the book's description. The trigger warning for fatphobia concerned me as I started reading this, as this is something that I've had to deal with all my life. I really loved how Hank made sure that Cole was always comfortable with his size and even made a point to tell Cole how attractive he was.

The biggest issue I had with this book was the romance was very quick, and I felt like there had not been a lot of development in their relationship in the beginning. I would have liked to have seen more of them interact and watch them both catch feelings before anything progressed further. This is more of a personal complaint with it than an issue with the book, and someone else might enjoy this aspect of it. Overall, I really enjoyed it!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This was stealthly fluffy and low angst, and I'm incredibly okay with that.

From the summary this had a lot that intrigued me. I'm always looking for books with Fat main characters, especially in the romance genre. And honestly, I'll drop most things on my to-do list at the utterance of the words "grumpy x sunshine". Add in MCs in their 40s and a foreign setting and I was more than sold.

My favorite part of this book was Cole's character and the way he deals with how people perceive him, his reflections on his journey of therapy and self-worth, followed closely by the descriptions of the dives. The author did an amazing job of painting a vivid picture of the Red Sea and the fauna and flora in such an incredible setting.

Hank and Cole's connection was adorable, though Hank's attraction to Cole toed a little too close the line of fetish for me, so heads up on that.

If you're looking for an insta-lovey read that packs steam, this one will likely entertain you.
My biggest issue was the sudden conflict and resolution at the end of the book, it felt a little too jarring and yet easy at the same time.

Drifting by J. Calamy is a short MM romance novel set in Egypt about an American artist and antiques expert Cole and the diver he meets while on vacation. What makes Drifting so different from the typical romance is that the characters are not the conventional leading men. Both are older men at 40 and 50 while Cole is fat, unashamed but still socially insecure about it. J. Calamy gives a face to these men at what is usually considered an age past their prime.

I found Drifting be sweet, if a bit too cutesy. The synopsis gives away a bit too much because you can pretty already predict where the story is going. Anyway, this is first and foremost a romance which does work if you are into the insta-love trope. With its short length, the book is quick to build sexual tension, making you want to shout, “Kiss already!” The love feels fast but authentic with just some added drama to break up the ease.

Drifting is a workable and easy to like gay romance with some unconventional leads set in an exotic locale.

This book was stunning from start to finish, I fell in love with the characters and setting instantly. Its got grumpy/sunshine vibes, holiday romance feels and adventure - the diving scenes are incredible and descriptions grabbed me throughout.

Also has alternating povs, plus size rep and older mcs. The scenery and all of the details come to life on the page, could see it as a movie and such beautiful writing. Just had me invested from start to finish, the romance is really sweet and it gave slow burn feels with steam.

Cole and Hank both make the mistake of assumptions about each other to start, but admire one another and instant attraction. I loved how awkward they were, learning one another and enjoying the dives together.

They find common ground and fit together so perfectly. Hanks cooking and Coles art, how they open up to each other and learning to appreciate the small things. Impact each other equally and even when they had their differences it made sense.

I actually didn't mind the conflict at all, it was fitting and I liked how it was handled as they both figure things out. Through their friendships and surroundings, they find a balance and life together.

Overall I enjoyed this book and it surprised me in a lot of ways, grabbed at my heartstrings and I was enchanted. Got to have a happy ending and it was wonderful 💕

Gorgeous writing and look forward to reading more from this author.

Drifting is the first book in author J. Calamy’s Diving In series. The story is told in alternating third-person omniscient perspectives. I really enjoyed how Calamy used this narrative style to flesh out Cole and Hank as individual characters with lives outside their enthralling dives and growing feelings. Cole was a terrific lead. His backstory clearly indicates he’s had a long struggle with being overweight, and on page it’s clear he has and continues to work at accepting himself. The string of interesting jobs (archives in a museum, State Department) added to his intelligence. I really enjoyed that this professional experience also got a moment to shine when Cole low-key confronts the man who is extorting money from Hank by brandishing his public-service honed skills. Hank was a marvelous opposites-attract romantic interest for Cole. For one thing, I liked how Hank is just straight up attracted to Cole from the get-go. And because we get to hear Hank’s side, it was easy to tell Hank is genuine in his desire for Cole.

3.75 stars, rounding up to 4 stars (because I really appreciated the fresh premise).

Diving in Drifting is my first book from J. Calamy, and it won’t be my last. This was a lovely story about two 40+ year old men who meet in the quaint, rustic town of Al Shahin in Egypt; they fall in love while spending their days diving the blue ocean and just…enjoying each other.

Cole works for the American Embassy, is into art and antiques, loves people, and is an easy-going man who sees joy everywhere. He has insecurities about his weight but is learning to combat them in a healthy way. We don’t often see protagonists who deal with weight issues in books so I appreciated how the author really explored this in a body-positive way.

We have Hank, the super-ripped divemaster at the Grande hotel where Cole is staying. Hank is closer to 50, grumpy, and quite a put-off at the beginning - because he has been stuck in Al Shahin paying off a debt to a gangster that seems like it’ll never end and the shadow of being in debt hangs over his head and colors everything he has and sees in a negative way. Also, given how one has to be sensitive about male-male relations in Egypt, he hasn’t had an intimate relationship in a long while and is therefore quite lonely. Cole literally blows into his life and turns his way of thinking upside down and fills all of those aching lonely places inside him.

Grumpy meets sunshine = lots of healing and discovery.

The pacing was a little slow at times but the author did a wonderful job of giving us a fascinating setting, both on land and underwater (I need to go diving NOW), and likable characters. The intimate scenes were sweet as well but a little slow-paced.

All in all, a very enjoyable read!

Yup, this is basically exactly what I want out of queer adult romance.

characters & representation | Our main characters are achillean white men; the buff, bearded, "pushing-fifty" Hank, and the fat , soft, late-thirties to early-forties Cole. The supporting cast is mostly Egyptian. It's entirely possible that I'm missing it, but there isn't enough 35+ love interests in queer romance, so I love to see it. The characters themselves feel older too; they're great at communicating. No miscommunication trope to be seen here!

style & prose | Dual third-person POV of both love interests. This is my absolute favorite perspective. The prose itself is pretty solid- it's easy to follow with ample, but not excessive, descriptions. And the dialog! Basically immaculate. There was a single sentence that I found awkward (because to not use a conjunction when you can use one feels weird), but I'm a pretty particular person so I could believe that it's just a 'me' problem.

plot | Really well done! It wasn't particularly novel, but it didn't need to be. It handled the sunshine & grump dynamic in an entertaining, believable, and super fun way. As a novella, there's so much space for there to be pacing issues, have a rushed ending, or even fell unfinished. There's none of that. Cole and Hank have more going on for both of them outside of falling for each other and that fucking works. Plus THEY'RE SO CUTE TOGETHER. Love this relationship for them.

overall | I really loved reading this. The characters, the romance, the spice (did I not mention that? there's spice), their chemistry, the HEA. All so good. I recommend this to adult romance lovers everywhere.

I absolutely adored this sweet and steamy MM romance novella! J Calamy is a master of creating characters you can't help but fall in love with, and Hank and Cole are no exception. This story gives you sunshine/grump on land, in the water, and getting all kinds of slippery on a boat. Throw in SCUBA lessons, an ancient artifact, body positivity, and gorgeous locations and you can see why this book is a scorching, one-sitting read!

Having read J Calamy’s crime/action romances The Boss and The Chief, I was expecting the new book to be more of the same: scalding-hot queer romance with great writing and all the feels, plus the very real threat of violence in the international criminal underworld. I got the heat and the feels and the writing, but the whole thing was much sweeter, more affirming, and less angsty. While the criminal underworld does play a role, it’s a much more understated one, leaving more room for the exploration of this unique and very sweet grump/sunshine relationship.

Cole—the Sunshine—has some issues, including anxiety and poor body image, but he’s mostly happy as he sets out on his first real diving vacation. Of course, he lusts after his new divemaster’s physique, but why would someone that hot be into him? And why is Hank so pissed off all the time?

Hank—the Grump—has other problems, not the least of which is a debt to a local criminal he can’t ever seem to repay. Though he’s the best divemaster around, his poor social manners make it hard for him to keep his bosses and clients happy and make enough money to get out of debt.

Their first encounter doesn’t go well, because Hank’s kind of a dick, but something keeps Cole intrigued—maybe it’s Hanks’s chiseled, sun-kissed physique? Or could it be the beautiful world beneath the waves he glimpses under Hank’s tutelage?

The ice quickly thaws, and Cole discovers that not only is Hank not an asshole, he’s also into Cole. Like, really into him, into his big, soft body, the one he’s been ashamed of all his life. You can see where this is going, right? Well, it goes there, and in a very hot and satisfying way, the details of which I leave to your reading pleasure.

But there are some things you might not expect, and which bear mentioning. Both characters are dealing with some mental health challenges, and the author does not shy away from showing them in an open and healthy way. Because people have problems, and no one benefits when they get swept under the rug, or off the page. J Calamy is never one to shy away from dealing with characters’ trauma and internal struggles. So while this is ultimately a sweet and tender romance, that sweetness does not come at the expense of realistic psychological portrayals.

Another thing you may not be expecting if you haven’t read the author’s other books is the quality of the writing. Calamy nails each character’s voice, both internal and in dialogue. These are not just cartoon Grump and Sunshine characters—they feel real, and that brings so much more tenderness to the sweet moments and depth to the spicy ones. I laughed out loud on a number of occasions, and I went “Daaaammmnn” on some others. You have to read to see what I mean, but J Calamy can fucking WRITE.

The last thing I want to mention is the setting, which, I guess the title kind of hints at, involves diving. I have never gone scuba diving, but the underwater world they explore is fascinating and beautifully told. The descriptions of the reefs and the undersea creatures they encounter are the equal of any you’ll find in a more “literary” novel, but these come with a sidecar of hot on-the-boat sex. Well, they have sex off the boat too, but you get my point. But even out of the water, the depictions of the Red Sea and the people who live along it are so real you feel like you’re dipping your toes in the salty water.

Calamy uses the discovery they make while diving to highlight some interesting cultural and political issues as well, and the angst that comes in during their temporary setback is well-earned and relevant to the plot and to the real-world challenges of the region. And yes, they get a HEA--this is a romance, after all.

If you’re ever in the mood for a sweet and spicy M/M romance novel with a grump/sunshine love story, reef diving, ancient treasure, heart-warming romance, body positivity, mental health rep—oh, and did I mention the author’s hallmark ghost pepper spicy sex scenes? Well, if all of that sounds good, run—don’t walk—to the seaside for the summer read you’ve been waiting for.

Wow what an absolutely brilliant read. This is the first book I’ve read by J. Calamy and I’ve got to say I have been totally blown away.

Artist and antiques expert Cole is on a holiday for two weeks to complete his driving qualifications and get experience. He is a big teddy bear but he has been hurt badly in the past. When he first sees the scuba diving master he’s not sure what to make of him he looks grumpy. Cole could not deny the man was a handsome hunk of a man. And if honest there was a spark between them.

Hank was The dive master at a local hotel and he was not in a good place. He owed money to a local gangster $15,000 and he knew if he was late on his payment it would not be good. Thankfully the owner of the hotel was a good friend and understood a lot about Hank. They were both hiding the fact that they were gay because in Al’Shahin It was A sin.
As Hank and Cole spend more time together they can’t deny their feelings for one another. But they have to be careful. Could anything come of their feelings for one another??

I haven’t read a book before where being gay is illegal. And I really felt the struggle that these men went through to just be themselves. Their feelings for one another is just like a dream love story. I really liked the way that Hank took care of Cole. Their relationship is just beautiful, their passion and chemistry is just sizzling.
I am so excited to read another book by this author because she got me Feeling and going through every emotion that Hank and Cole went through. An outstanding read

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
Cole has spent a long time getting over his ex-husband's belittling and fat-shaming. He is learning to love himself again and embrace his curves. One thing Cole hasn't gotten back is the inspiration to paint or draw. He still loves art and is the Assistant Cultural Attache to the US Embassy in Cairo but being surrounded by beautiful artefacts hasn't sparked his artistic skills. Cole has arrived in Al'Shahin in the Red Sea to complete his Scuba Diving Certificate, hoping that immersion in the beautiful culture and stunning location will rekindle his motivation. Then he meets Hank - his hot, older and rugged Scuba Instructor.
Hank is in debt to a local gangster and is stuck giving Scuba Diving lessons to the rich to pay off the money. His life is in a rut, he hasn't had a meaningful relationship for a long time due to the restrictive laws on gay people, and the loneliness has left him brash and short-tempered. Cole arrives for lessons, and Hank is instantly attracted to him. He tries to respect the Guest/Staff rules, but he cannot deny his feelings for Cole.
As they spend every day together, their shared love of the sea, diving and food allows them to open up about their lives, desires, and past heartbreaks. A passionate romance develops that inspires Cole to draw again and gives Hank the push he needs to start planning his future. Everything is going well until they make an underwater discovery that sets them on opposing sides on how to deal with it. They fight, Cole returns to Cario, and Hank is alone again. Can they get past their conflict and discover what is more important to them? Or will their insecurities blind them from reaching out to the man they love?
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 A beautiful story about two men seeking more from life, searching for love and needing acceptance for who they are rather than being judged by what people see in them. The book was wonderfully body-positive and sweetly romantic with some heartbreaking moments. It had deliciously hot sex scenes which were passionate and life-affirming. Highly recommend.
J. Calamy is a new author for me and I must say, I was impressed with the openness, honesty, devotion, desire to commit, feeling of worth in finding someone who doesn't see the outer appearance but what's in one's heart this story presented. It is the kind of story that leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling and also the huge desire to read more from this author. This author was able to put on paper the exact feelings, the joy and then the hurt, the feeling of desolation, of betrayal, but then the openness of both characters to see they had made a mistake, to own that mistake and then to take steps to rectify that mistake.
Set in a small town on the shores of The Red Sea, the story centers around Cole, an antiquities dealer for the museum in Cairo and Hank, a diver who Cole approaches to attain his open water certificate. There is raw passion and lust that turns into something much deeper. And that deepness really got into my heart as I read.
Highly recommend this author for anyone who loves a great MM story.
Cole and Hank enjoy diving into life and the sea.  This is a delightful story about two men who have a second chance to fully enjoy life and experience a deep love.  The characters are wonderful and the story has just the right mix of a little intrigue and lots of special moments.
I really loved the diving moments and how wonderfully they are described.  Diving can be wonderful and this book made me want to go diving again.
This is book one in the Diving In series.
I really enjoyed the setting of this book. The descriptions of the dives and the fact that it was set in Egypt was super refreshing. There was a little bit of grumpy/sunshine, but I really liked that both Hank and Coke were confident in different ways.
The story definitely went in a different direction than what I thought it would. I did feel like it ended too quickly, but that could just be because I wanted more.
Overall a super fun and cute story, 3/5 🌟
Why do I have a problem with sex in books? Especially ones for review? That question has nothing to do with my review, btw, I just seem to feel that I'm required to rate it now... 🤣
I didn't know what to expect from this book (I don't read a lot of romance 😅) but I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though the beginning is a bit meh.
The story is nice and very atmospheric, but the characters grabbed me more than the story; I relate the most with Cole, but Hank is also just so real.
This is not just a romance, though; it’s also a trip to the Middle East, adventures below the surface of the Red Sea and a discovery of a lifetime, it's love at first sight, about standing tall in the face of adversity, and about finding that common ground.
Drifing is a solid opening to this series and I cannot wait for more Hank & Cole (Hole? Cank? 🤔)
This was my first read for #Pride Month and I recommend you get yourself a copy!
Hank is the divemaster at the Hotel Grande Al’Shahin (and Navy vet), and he's trapped in the slightly faded resort whilst paying off a bad debt. Cole, an Assistant Cultural Attaché working at the US Embassy in Cairo is taking a well-earned vacation where he intends to tick getting dive certified off his bucket list. Cue, a very sweet grumpy/sunshine romance with engaging characters - I also appreciate that they're both a little older and Cole is an adorable bear. There’s also great imagery of the Egyptian town as well as beautiful descriptions of the underwater world Hank loves to share with Cole, but they're not so much that they dominated the romance. I really enjoyed this quick, sweet read and I'll keep an eye out for more in the Diving In series…4*
The last week I was able to finish an awesome ARC by J Calamy – ‘Diving in Drifting’ thank you @gayromancereview for this opportunity and this is my honest and unbiased opinion:
I was looking for some body-positivity, and while this is always a difficult topic for me personally (I was a bit anxious to apply for this story), reading the blurb and knowing that the topic would be mixed up with some later-in-life-romance, I knew this was just the perfect read for me:
First of all: I loved reading a book placed in Egypt – my hubby and I had our honeymoon there and it was awesome to connect with some moments and places.
Second: My heart aches for all the cities, states or countries where love isn’t always possible to express as carefree as you should be able to and just be whoever you are!
It's a reminder to be humble and grateful to live a privileged life and try to support ppl who might need help in certain circumstances.
(Not only in #pridemonth obviously)
While both MCs were from the US, they had to adapt to rules of the country they live in; so you might consider this a lovestory in a forbidden context.
I loved how Hank described Cole as this cute little bear cub he’s totally smitten with! Made my heart swoon and ache BIG TIME.
Who would’ve guessed that the grumpy divemaster & superhot dude Hank with his “bad tattoos & dad beard” as Cole would describe him; was able to be this soft inside!
They both were kinda awkward and clumsy & I loved it so much, bc I could relate to this level of uncertainty when it comes to flirting&stuff.
I was so glad that Cole despite of his outer appearance exudes confidence, while Hank with his own baggage of problems is anxious to fall in love with someone, he considered himself unworthy for.
This was a quite fresh character design imo & breaks with the usual “fat equals insecurity” situation I’m often confronted with.
It made this read a definite YASS on the body positivity scale!
This was an awesome (fast paced) lovestory; where two beautiful men were able to connect through their love for the beauty of diving within a short 10-ish days and get a second chance to find love
I would've loved a short epilogue but that's my absolute personal preference in romance books, it ends in a HEA !!
I would highly recommend you this story if you’re up for a later-in-life lovestory with opposites attract and beautiful moments under the egyptian sun and the red see.
J Calamy was a new to me author & I plan to read more!
Unique M/M romance, passionate more than steamy, age-gap
I’ve read BBW (Big Beautiful Women) stories where the guy likes his women voluptuous, but I’ve never read an M/M story like that. Cole Hadley is self-conscious about his weight but he still doesn’t let it hold him back from getting his open water certification so that eventually he can get his Underwater Archeology certification. He works as Deputy Cultural Attaché to the US Embassy in Cairo by way of Delaware. He’s on his way to Al’Shahin to learn from a Divemaster. Enter Hank Ashton, ex US Navy, almost 50yo, about 10 years older than his newest student who he immediately crushes on because he reminds Hank of a Teddy bear. Hank is a curmudgeon or as Cole calls him a “grumpy grouper.” Cole likewise is attracted to the buff older southern man from North Carolina who teaches him to dive while Cole shows Hank how to be thrilled at his surroundings for the first time in a long time.
There will be a secret that Hank keeps from Cole, an infatuation that they must hide, a surprise and lots of help from friends. Truly funny, sweet, passionate gay romance with a wonderful ending. I hope the next book is about Hank’s good friend Levi. If you like gay romance with a little intrigue, a bad guy to stay away from and a happy ending, try this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews.
There’s a lot to like in this book: a beautifully described setting – the diving, I have no words; characters who not only rock the grumpy/sunshine dynamic but who also manage to progress through attraction, getting to know each other, and falling for one another with a nice blend of sweetness, awkwardness, and chemistry; and a plot that moves along with few dull moments. Of all the enjoyable components here, I think it’s the character development that shone the most for me– both Cole and Hank feel real and relatable, for better or worse (mostly better). Overall, an enjoyable read.
Alright so it took me a hot second to get into this one. It's a slowish start to me, but nothing wrong with that. I absolutely adored Cole. He's such a happy firecracker and I was here for it. I loved Hank too, he's reserved with his feelings, but he totes has the hots for Cole and I was here for it. The descriptions were rich and beautiful. I loved that Cole was really a badass. He stood up for himself, and asked for what he wanted and didn't let his body insecurity get in his way. Def admired him. I loved how everything was resolved. There's a scattering of really fun/cute humor too that I really enjoyed.
This is alot different than previous books I have read of this author and it kind of threw me for a loop really because it went from danger,seduction and thrilling organised crime drama to sweet and fluffy Instalove.
Cole was adorable and dealt with some harsh things due to being overweight but I love the way he handled the negative energy thrown his way.
Hank was hot, no doubt about that but I felt like he treated Cole as an almost fetish at times. The description of Egypt and all it has to offer was incredible and the author did such an amazing job it felt like you were there in that moment along for the ride.
As I finished reading, I must admit I had to pause to think about my review. First, while it took me a bit to get into this book, I am so so glad that I did. It is a slow build up true romance about two older men that are complete opposites--one is grumpy, and one is a ray of sunshine, but somehow a slow burning love develops. And what a most appropriate title! It is a great blend of mystery, discovery (or rediscovery) of oneself, and following where life takes you. Also, as one who is terrified of diving, this author made me want to try it it is so beautifully descriptive. This was a new author for me but one I will put on my list. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.
While I was not overly impressed with this book, there is nothing terribly wrong with it. The story involves finding treasure as instructor and student were diving; a dispute between the artist who wants to preserve the history and the divemaster who wants to get out from under a debt to a cruel overlord. The divemaster eventually gives in as he is attracted to his student but in the process gets his freedom because the government of Ehypt provides enough publicity that he gets enough business to pay off his debt while the artist moves to be with him. The author clearly has some interest in artistic endeavours and understands diving.
Hank the grumpy divemaster and his teddy bear Cole! Both MC's are 40+ men with very different personalities and life styles. Cole is a happy heavier set man looking to do all things he has not gotten to do yet in life. On his trip to learn how to dive he meets Hank who is big and muscular and very unhappy with his current life situation. I read an arc and I really enjoyed this being a slower paced vacation romance between two mature men both realizing they really are looking to start over a new! Their intimate times were subtle and all the visual scenery while diving was stunning to read! AThis was a pleasant and happy summer romance!
I love Cole and Hank. I like that they are older than twenty-something but still have moments where they feel shy and less than super confident. I love how they get excited about their passions and the other man appreciates that passion. It's a very sweet book, and then there is the diving. The way the author talks about diving makes me want to go! This is a new to me author that I will be looking forward to reading in the future!
This is the story of Cole and Hank. I adore grumpy and sunny main characters. Cole and Hank just fit. Please read the trigger warnings. I loved how the author handled and portrayed the phobia. This is the first book in the series. It is written wonderfully with beautiful descriptions that keeps you reading. Characters are amazing and I fell in love with both of them. I can't wait for the next one. Definitely recommended.
I received this book as an Arc and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
