Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Oda is a grandmaster at establishing the fantasy, the adventure, and the mystery and peril. I think this arc is the first time he gets to really pull off all stops with the stuff. Neither we nor the Straw Hats have any idea where they've just ended up, with things gradually unveiling and the initially lighthearted jaunt turning into something creepier and deadlier. A seemingly divine force is set against them...

...and a bit of a funny timing for me to read just this stuff, when in the comic, as I write this, an even greater divine force - with much the same methods and mood, just cranked up to eleven - has showed up. The Skypiea Arc seemed like filler when it first came out, but even to this day it continues to prove its value and worth in foreshadowing.

SKYPIEA ARC - PART 1
1. i love reading chemistry stuff in new worlds, YES, give me the science of it all, especially about new land mass!!!

2. i love the idea of the shell dials! tone dial, lamp dial, wind dial. it's also a clever way to show again the different types of animals that get used that substitute electrical things - like the transponder snails and now the shell dials.

3. first impression of the kami island: it looks like the spirit plane in avatar the last airbender

4. i need to know all the class offenses now, so i will keep track. so far, i know 5 out of 11. (will update which volume tells me those)

class 1: not submitting to the judgment of a kami's vassal (#27)
class 2: disrespecting the kami (#26)
class 3:
class 4:
class 5: obstructing government official (#26)
class 6:
class 7:
class 8:
class 9: theft from sky island (#26)
class 10: damaging sky island property (#26)
class 11: trespassing (#26)

5. once again, a group of crooked people are taking charge of a country while the actual ruler (king or god all alike) are nowhere to be found/disempowered

6. so far, this entire volume was merely exposition with the hint of the challenge and red line to be followed about.

The art for Skypiea is beautiful. The arc as a whole is a hit or miss for some people. I really like it, but I can understand those who don't. Enel is great. I'd love to see him return at some point.

I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of this arc, so you'll see that my ratings for the next couple of volumes are going to be pretty low.

I know it's an important arc, both because of Merri and because we get our first introduction of the haki, but i have never found it as exciting as all he others arcs

6/10 🌟

When you can't read books, cure your slump with Manga. Sky Island feels really underwhelming, yet I'm still in the beginning so let's see how this turns out

The sky islands are intriguing and it is fun starting a new arc. The place looks a little too good to be true and it is, of course. I love that Conis and her father and the Sky Knight is a cool character, too.

Content notes: violence, smoking

2025 reread : I think this is the first read through where I notice just how much damage the Merry goes through. It started in Reverse Mountian and hasn't really let up since then. It's good foreshadowing but it hurts.
So many things are introduced in this volume that will be important to this arc. Too many to list. But it doesn't feel like an overwhelming infodump. I think the speed of information giving is just right so there is no time to get bored and yet we're not overwhelmed either.

It's nice how things starts going faster. And the crew being separated in two group offers some opportunities for nice interactions. Some of the forshadowing is hurting my heart though

One Piece, Vol. 26 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (237–246) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon begins the Skypiea Arc. The Straw Hats successfully reach the cloud harboring Skypiea, and soon after their arrival meet some of its inhabitants – a hostile group of apparently primitive natives and a friendlier people of the more civilized town of Angel Island. While the rest of Straw Hats mingle with them, learning of the town's history, and enjoying its unique technology, Nami explores the endless sea of clouds. She finds Skypiea, but learns that the Straw Hats have been labeled as trespassers and will be dealt with accordingly.

Although, the Straw Hats are able to fend off an initial arrest attempt, their ship, and some of the crew, is taken away by Eneru, the current god of all that lies atop the cloud. Free, but wishing to reunite with their friends, Monkey D. Luffy, Sanji, and Usopp enter Skypiea – Eneru's domain to rescue them.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part, it is written and illustrated rather well. Riding the Knock Up Stream, the Straw Hats finds themselves in the "White Sea" – an ocean in the sky. While greeted amiably, their prescience in the White Seas is noticed and they are promptly placed arrest for trespassing. While some of the crew is arrested and taken away, the others plan to rescue them, by going into the belly of the beast – Skypiea, where the cruel God Enel resides.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 26 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

A lot of the fanbase seems to have a problem with the Skypiea arc and reading this volume I kind of understand why. It's very exposition heavy, you have the introduction of the sky islands, the knights, the gods and angels. There is a lot more but you get the gist, the thing is it's great introducing all these elements but not one of them is developed or intriguing, so it make the whole thing feel like a slog to read through. To boil it down, it's at least 2 new concepts per chapter and we've got 10 chapters in this so that 20 new things. I kind of miss the simplicity of early One Piece at the moment where it didn't have all these things happening at once and you could just enjoy the voyage.

The only good bit for me was the local citizens that took in the crew to help them out and the alter scene at the end. However the thing with the alter is it requires a sacrifice and they had a few of the Straw Hats there but this is one of those series where I just don't feel like there is a genuine threat. So there isn't that emotional pull or stakes there it just feels like it's put in there for no reason.

The crew are finally on the Sky Island which is made up of clouds – Zoro takes the piss out of everyone jumping in, flip to the next page and you can see Zoro’s little legs sticking out of the clouds!

The crew beat up the local police as they are asked to pay 7 million to enter the island, and for their crimes, they are going to face the God of the Sky Islands. And this is no ordinary god, this god just blasts people with lightning left, right and centre like take a day off!

Zoro starts fighting a sky shark and gets so annoyed that the future World's Greatest Swordman just punches the shark instead!

Zoro doing the Tarzan yell whilst swinging on a vine is classic and backed up with Luffy going the same yell a couple of chapters later – they are truly a match made in heaven – captain and first mate have to think alike!

Oda’s drawing of Luffy, Sanji and Usopp being charred and shell-shocked after unexpectedly blowing themselves up is too funny – all wide-eyed and hair wild!

I think the biggest win was seeing some more of Robin’s power tbh. But I am intrigued by this whole Heaven’s Gate and the people so far. I’m curious to know how the world functions since it seems like it isn’t as peaceful and picturesque as previously presented.

The boys are so good in response to Conis’ betrayal though I understand why she did it considering she was nearly smited (smoted?) in real time. And just who exactly is this knight? Everyone seems to know Gafor, but Conis referred to him as “kami”, interesting!

Once again, the gang is split up but I like that we’ve changed combinations again. I think it’s fun to see different relationships at play. You can tell Sanji is already kind of over it having to be the voice of reason between Luffy and Usopp, lol.

Have I mentioned that I love how Zolo looks out for everyone? His willingness to let the others get to safety while he stays with the ship. He’s a good first mate. <3

(Read in 2010, review from 2024)

After a better last volume (Vol 25.) this one I thought was alright. The Straw Hats are finally in Skypiea proper which has all of Eiichiro Oda's crazy unique ideas and designs worked throughout. I will say as interesting as the designs were there was a lot of exposition dumped on the reader which wasn't as interesting. Still there were a lot of cool visuals which I think carried the volume otherwise.

A promising arc start, but then it got full of unneeded stupid technical details about the working of skypiea, which was so boring.

Besides Luffy was really getting on my nerves this time.

They finally arrived there. I like that place, the reason is too simple. I am so surprised at the people who live in sky island.Have you ever seen the people who have a wing on the back? I have never seen them like this, so I like the idea of author of One piece. It is so interesting for me. They met an old man before this volume. He used to be the God of sky island before.
