Little Tinka is the seventh child, so her family waits anxiously for the luck she is supposed to bring . . . Unfortunately, she brings nothing but a pretty head and a lazy disposition. When, in desperation, her parents buy a charm from a Wise Old Woman to cure Tinka of her laziness, the little girl embarks on an unexpected adventure, and an education!

This little book is absolutely darling! The folk-tale atmosphere and gentle message make it a delightfully wholesome read, and the illustrations are fantastic.

An interesting take on how to learn to work--that's what I like about Kate Seredy's books, is that she can see things a different way, more like how I'd describe God's viewpoint, being able to see absolutely all parts of the picture, so her explanations teach lovingly, but with the "pure knowledge that enlarges the soul." I so wish I could find the book by her I most want to read, but apparently it's out of print and not to be found these days.

I read and re-read this book in elementary school, because I loved the beautiful coloured illustrations. Lazy Tinka, Pagoo and D'Aulaires' Norse Gods and Giants were the three from the school library that I pored over by the hour because of the beautiful drawings. The moral tale itself is a bit heavy-handed, but I've known plenty of pretty girls who thought they should be exempt from ever having to do any actual work! I giggled immoderately over the feather-bed, every time.
