Rate this book
Meet Matt Millz - Britain's Youngest (and funniest!) Comedian! Matt may be small but he is truly mighty on the comedy circuit. Well, he is in his head anyway. When the school holds a talent show, Matt has the opportunity to demonstrate that he's got the magical chutzpah quip to take him all the way to the Apollo. With the help of his diminutive manager, Kitty Hope, and his hapless form teacher, as well as the school brute, his heartthrob and Rob his best friend, Matt learns what it takes to be really funny . . . A hilarious new book from National TreasureT and real-life (very) funny man Harry Hill.

Its about a kid named Matt Millz that is a comedian. He goes to different gigs but they end up really bad! Then his manager got him a gig at the Y factor or something and he does really well. But, he gets disqualified because he is too young but after that, he meets his Favourite comedian and he gets really happy! This book is by Harry Hill, a famous comedian. I was excited by the idea of this book. Harry Hill is such a great comedian and I felt as though he'd be a great children's writer. Especially when writing about stand-up comedy. The book introduces us to 12-year-old Matt who loves comedy and making people laugh. After taking part in his school's talent show, Matt decides that he might have what it takes to be a comedian when he's older. With the help of his new manager, Matt starts booking gigs and creating his set. Will he have what it takes to make it?

The story feels very true to Hill's comedy persona. It's pop culture heavy and full of silly puns. It's also a great comedy resource. I thought the encyclopaedia-style entries about different comedians were a really fun addition to the story. This is exactly the kind of book that aspiring comedians would want to read and the fact that Hill offers recommendations of who to watch is great. Not only will it be a great source of inspiration for young comics but it also proves how much Harry Hill loves comedy. He offers tips for performing and encouragement for how to get by.

The story itself is pretty standard for a children's book. It's all quite basic and the story moves along at a fairly quick pace. I totally understand why that happens and it feels appropriate for the audience. The book also makes up for this by adding loads of extras. Obviously, the book is crammed full of jokes. Depending on your age and sense of humour, not all of these will land. However, there are so many of them that something probably will. And it's a kid's book, so it wasn't like it was going to be edgy or subversive.

I think this is a pretty solid start to this book series. The characters are fun and it is a whimsical tale. We're not quite in Roald Dahl territory but it's got some classic themes. The teachers are all ridiculous and over-the-top. The kids are shrewd and quick-thinking. Matt Millz is a charming and enjoyable book that I can imagine children loving it.

Matt Mills dreams of being a stand up comedian but it is a tough business and he is only 12!
Matt Millz is a children's book aimed at ages 9-12 but adults will love it too!
I wish I could bottle how happy this book made me. The stupid smile I had throughout, the laugh out loud lines, Harry Hill's humour shines from the plot whilst his audio narration is superb.
Matt is a young man with big plans. He even has a stage name, changing his surname from Mills to Millz. His comedy routine has been honed to perfection but can he find the right audience? His school mates, an old people's home, the big stage? I was desperate for Matt to succeed and fulfil his dreams but the odds seem stacked against him.
The scenarios are all very funny but they are underpinned by a strong emotional thread. The drive to entertain and be successful is so strong and I really cared for Matt. I think children will like the aspirational nature of the book and think of following their own dreams. The kid characters are easy to like and relate to, whilst the humours lifts the tone associated with the risks and failures they face.
There are lots of mentions of popular culture which younger children may struggle to understand but fans of X Factor and other reality shows should appreciate the references. Harry Hill's quirky humour sparkles throughout and I just can't understate how much I loved this book!

Amusing 'stand up' for kids.

Quite liked this, a look at a budding young comic, his family, friends and teachers.

Matt's mum may leave his step-dad in charge a lot, but that's okay cos Matt and his best mate try his comedy material out at school a lot, and with the help of a new (if diminutive manager), he might manage to crack the big time at some talent shows too... once he's debuted at the local WI...

There are the bare bones here of a good series, with a relationship arc with Matt's stepdad, a possible nemesis in his Headteacher, scarily efficient and knowledgeable manager Kitty, and lots of predictably silly but fun jokes.

Makes a good audiobook allowing the author to narrate quirkily (a la David Walliams). Kids who enjoy telling jokes and who dream of hitting it big will find this both entertaining and useful as possbly how 'not' to do it!

For ages 8-12.

Good fun. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone aged 10-14 interested in comedy, which I suspect is exactly the intended target market.

As someone a little (ahem) above the target age range, but a massive fan of Harry Hill, I found it intermittently amusing and a little predictable, but it breezed by quite happily. I still think his first novel, flight from deathrow, is his best work.

If you have a young relative who wants to learn how to be a stand-up, this tale (aimed at kids between 8 and 14) is pretty good. Harry's personal experience from his time onstage means there are mentions of top comedians - even Stewart Lee! - but it's great fun and a quick read with fun pictures. Less cruel than David Walliams' work, and very relatable protagonists. Give Kitty a spin-off!

Good jokes that made us laugh, with a plot that didn't stop. Some excellent advice for wannabe stand ups. Though another book about kids in school where the author clearly has no idea what actually goes on in school!
