In the year 2197, a catastrophic war has ripped through the Interstellar Union, leaving the once prosperous alliance of dozens of planets in chaos. In hopes of preventing further damage, the young war hero, Hank Rhoman, is chosen to lead a ragtag team of humans and aliens to help the Union rise from the ashes of the crippling aftermath. But during the inaugural mission of Phoenix, Hank and his crew discover clues to a malevolent scheme that could push the galaxy to the brink of destruction.
This is an old-school sci-fi adventure, with good guys in spaceships fighting bad guys in spaceships, you know what I'm talking about. The good stuff.
It's clear that the author is having fun exploring the world and the characters here, and that fun shows up on the page.
Even when things get rough for the good guys, I thought "Hey, that's cool," not "I hope they don't die."
The whole book is clever and fun, but Carter specializes in space fight scenes. In movies, those are special effects. Carter has an unlimited budget in his book, but he still restrains himself from writing "BOOOOOM" and "WHOOO-HOO" on each page during the fights.
