If you liked the series "Special A" by Minami Maki, you will love to follow the adventures of Hina and her friends.
For me, discovering this manga on www.mangareader.net, I admit I had some a prioris from the drawings proposed by the artist. Some features left me a little disappointed in the character's design, less fun to watch because less detailed. I personally have a preference for the drawing by Kisaka Io in the serie "Ao Haru Ride", which is why I am less affected by the style of Furukawa Shiori.
But compared to "Special A", the graphics are more refined. This gives a sense of clarity. As a result, bubbles allow more room for expressions with many close-ups. The pencil strokes are also lighter and more modern. It's why it's not really my cup of tea but the drawings are still well done.
In terms of history, the story focus on a group of five young gifted men who attend special classes and already proven themselves in the business world. Alongside their studies, they must thwart the attacks of different enemies. All hidden things that Hina has to discover in her quest to make friends and finding true love.
Battles, car chases, kidnapping and comical situations are "au rendez-vous" with always good humor.
The reader do not mind turning the pages, even if sometimes some scenes are recurring elements of the manga world with gags and situations already seen and reviewed. But the reader spent a good, entertainment and relaxing time. Fun, this manga is readable with pleasure.
Five is very similar to Special A concept wise, and even character wise, mostly or especially in regard to Hina (aka "Princess" or "Hime") the heroine of the story. Unless the similarities would be something that would irritate you, I'd think you'd like it. Personally I like "Special A" better, but this is a good read.
After transferring schools all her life due to her parents work, Hina is finally able to set down roots and make the friends she's always dreamed of. The school separates it's students by grades, so Hina is put in the S-A class with the top students. There she's meets the "Five" a group of male friends of various types who turn out to be well off or successful. They end up in a lot of peculiar situations while dealing with their own problems and relationships and love.
The art style isn't my favorite, but it's not bad and I've seen similar works. The only think my eyes are constantly drawn to is the hands, where the fingers are too long. Not a big deal, but my eyes zero in on it every time. :)
The thing that I remember most distinctly from this series is the really ugly artwork. Like, this artist's style is terrible. I can barely remember the story (only that I found it tedious and boring and pointless) but the ugliness of everything has never faded from my memory.
I could honestly pick apart the style because it's horrendous on every front. Everyone looks weird and uncanny. I checked the first and last chapters and the author's only real style change is that she used really fat lines at first and then got to using thinner, more sketch-like lines, but the anatomy and weird, huge, bug-like eyes and terrible aesthetic remained.
Since manga is a visual medium, the art plays a big role and for me, a very ugly style will kill any possible merit the story may have had, which is why I maybe got 3-4 volumes into this before I couldn't take it any longer and trashed it.
It may seem harsh, but this manga has the ugliest style I've ever seen that wasn't deliberately made to be ugly and cartoonish, like a lot of gag or children's manga.
This review is part of a personal challenge to: 1) read more French books; 2) improve my French; 3) read all the French manga novels from my mom's manga collection. Seeing as I read this book in French, the actual review will be in French (duh).
intermezzo saat dikejar deadline. plotnya gabungan antara boys before flower sama perfect girl evolution. satu cewek yang keliatannya biasa aja tiba-tiba dikelilingin lima cowok yang jadi idola.
To this day this is still by far my favorite manga. It has so many aspects that I love, the characters, the story and the art most of all. I will continue to read this again and again =^.^=
