This delightful romance is the story of Raine and Jack. Connecting online in a chat room, Raine feels comfortable revealing her innermost thoughts and feelings to Jack and vice versa. The anonymity of the online world lets them be who they really are, and develop a relationship. When Jack wants to meet Raine in the real world she eventually agrees - and discovering that they know each other in real life is a shock neither expected. Can they trust what they've built online to provide a basis for a future together?
I've been wanting to dive into some HQN older Blaze books recently and I picked this one up on the premise, as internet chat rooms and online dating sights have only picked up since this book was first released. It holds up well over time (having been released initially in 2004)and the circumstances and scenarios that Jack and Raine find themselves in are exactly what one would expect now. I really enjoyed both characters. Jack in his real life is a confidant, somewhat quiet and focused man, all personalities that come through in his online persona. Raine on the other hand, in her real life world is a no-nonsense, get things done woman who can't afford to let anything slip and be vulnerable emotionally. But online she can be herself and reveal those innermost feelings. The sexual attraction between them online is quite sizzling and when they meet in person, despite the circumstances (no spoilers!) the attraction holds up equally well and they find themselves unable to resist each other. The love scenes are steamy and intense.
There is a secondary suspenseful subplot that plays out throughout the story and is key to the decisions that Raine and Jack make. I enjoyed this aspect of the story as well - there were some action packed scenes mixed in with the sexual and emotional ones and they made for a well rounded story.
Overall I found this to be an entertaining fast paced read with a well written plot, interesting characters and a steamy and believable romance. 4 stars!
The mystery was cool though I predicted the culprit from the beginning. It is a romance novel so plenty of sex which was fine. Some of the words used to describe the sexual encounters seemed a little forced. I like that it was not all about sex. Plenty of other interesting parts to the story.
The only part I loved was when Jack made a confession to Raine that they grew up together in the same city and went to the same school, that he already had a crush on her back then but felt intimidated by her family wealth.
Really enjoyed this one. I believe this was her debut book, so it's quite old, lol, but nonetheless a really good read. I may just have to hunt out her other ones and play catch up!
