A lively, illustrated biography of the great American author and humorist traces the colorful life of Samuel Clemens from his youth along the Mississippi River, through his work as a riverboat captain and journalist, to his popular writing career.
Rick Lyttle, who was born in Los Angeles in 1927, has been making prints for a good part of his adult life. He grew up on a ranch, served in the U.S. Navy during the closing months of World War II and then entered the University of California at Berkeley where he majored in English.
After graduating, he worked as a ranch hand, reporter and editor, bar tender, school bus driver, teacher, and freelance writer more or less in that order. He has written forty-one books, some of which carry his own illustrations. He began exploring printmaking in the fifties, first with relief prints and later with etchings.
His interest in printing led him back Indian Valley College in Novato and later to Sonoma State University in Rhonert Park. He has studied under Shane Whare, Kate Delos, Bud Gralapp, Walt Kuhlman, Mark Perlman, Ted Greer, Kent Rupp and several other outstanding teachers.
Lyttle uses a variety of techniques, and his images range from the abstract to the whimsical and from figures and landscapes to still life and portraits. His work has appeared in more than 100 juried shows.
He is a member of the California Society of Printmakers (www.caprintmakers.com) and has participated in Point Reyes Open Studios (www.pointryesart.com) for the past several seasons.
This book was an biography by Richard B Lyttle. It is about mark twain and how he was a Printer, riverboat pilot, newspaper reporter lecturer and of course author. It also talks about his family life personal experiences. I thought the book was very interesting Because of the fact of how wiled his life rely was such as when he was a kid he did almost every adventure that Tom Sawyer did in his book "Tom Sawyer". But at some parts the book was very boring. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes biographies or fun filled mischievous books.
Mark Twain--The Man and His Adventures Biography 231 pages
The book Mark Twain--The Man and His Adventures is the inspirational story of Samuel Clemens, a man who went from being a printer to a riverboat pilot to a lecturer to a writer. Samuel Clemens was born in 1835 in Florida, Missouri. His father was a judge and his brother Orion worked various jobs to provide the family money. When he was 12, Samuel was forced to work as a printer because his father died and could no longer provide them food. Soon after, Sam had many adventures, such as mining in San Francisco and becoming a riverboat pilot. After that, Sam wrote articles for many magazines, and was generally regarded as a humorist. Samuel mocked Captain Sellers in of his articles, and took up the name Mark Twain as tribute to Captain Sellers after Captain Sellers was so offended that he stopped writing altogether. He began writing stories based off of his life, such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer which was based off of his childhood in Hannibal. Even though he was rich from the several books he wrote, Samuel lost tons of money because he invested in things that failed, such as an automatic typesetter. By giving a worldwide lecturing tour, Samuel was able to regain his wealth. Throughout his life, Samuel faced great loss, as most of his family and some of his friends died. The book ends with talking about talking about how Samuel died.
This book was kind of depressing because it constantly talked about how it was the last time Samuel would see someone. For example it says "When Sam bade her goodnight, he had no idea it was their last farewell." and it also says "... they had their final view of Suzy ..." which means that both Suzy and Jean died. Also, I didn't like this book because it was very boring, the author didn't really try to make this book exciting. One thing I liked about this book was that the author was relatively unbiased. Richard B. Lyttle never says something like Samuel blamed himself, and he was right, he just says things like Samuel blamed himself. This is good because you can decide if it is actually his fault or not. Another part I didn't like about this book was that it was sort of confusing because sometimes the author would say Mark and other times he would say Samuel and I would forget that Samuel Clemens was Mark Twain. Overall, the information was pretty interesting, like I learned that The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was based off of Samuel's childhood.
