28-year-old Brayden James lives alone. He dines alone. He walks the formal gardens, alone. There is a barrenness about his life that cannot be filled even by his closest friends. Until, the solicitation. The first book in the Waldorf Manor series follows Brayden as he seeks out the person who will fill the void in his life - the void that has been calling out to him since adolescence. A gentleman through and though, he very rigidly raises a girl just ten years his junior to embrace a formal lifestyle and all that goes along with it. What began as healing for their broken lives soon draws them together in an unlikely relationship.
It's like Downtown Abbey sprinkled with age-play. That's probably how I would describe it.
Sometimes it gets almost ridiculous how far up their own asses those "proper gentlemen" are, and how pretentious it's all written to be. It's almost comical in its description. But only almost.
The story omits any sexual content in favor of pure domestic discipline as it was done in the good ol' days. And there's no romance either. It's replaced with a father's love for his daughter.
Again, it's weird, because it's different, and that makes it interesting.
I think I am going to read the next book in the series. But I do hope the story gets just a tiny bit more "normal", because it's so close to being a comedic caricature of upper-class British society, rather than a loving age-play/domestic-discipline story, which is probably what it aims for.
Very powerful dynamic. There were points where there was a feeling of force despite her being there willingly. Yet you could feel her settling into the life. And I think even Brayden was surprised at his feelings. The only real check I had was the unsettled feeling I got from the guy at the dinner party. He seems like a real potential threat and I was glad to see Brayden was watchful.
This story was recommended to me by a person who knows it intimately. Normally not my genre, I gave it a try. And was blown away! The cadence of the very British turn of phrase, the narration of rather Victorian values applied to a modern day insular society, is by turns fascinating and appalling. The characters are at first glance shockingly out of step with the times, but slowly the reason for their evolution becomes clear. And it is a rather sad and lonely existence. Hence the search of a man in his late twenties for a daughter to raise according to his standards. But that's where the tale takes a surprising turn. This book is a complete surprise!
This book is quite unlike anything else I've ever read. Never before have I read a spanking book that is not a romance. And never before have I come to quite like characters that I can't even begin to relate to. Brayden's lifestyle and wealth is something so far removed from my own life I couldn't even begin to imagine myself living like that. Bella Bryce has woven a tale that I struggled to put down, I was so engrossed in the book. The only thing I was disappointed about was the ending. It didn't end, but flowed seamlessly into the next book.
I really enjoyed this book because the writing was so well done and the characters were clear in my mind. I've never visited England but after reading this I feel like I know more about their culture. There were definitely times I felt that Alice was being mistreated, her uniqueness being repressed, but once again, that might just be my special snowflake Americanness acting up. I guess it's not so far fetched to assume the upper class value culture more than uniqueness. Overall, the story was enjoyable to read.

I got a little over halfway through this book before I got to the point where I just really didn't want to read it anymore. I think it was the point where I realized that this book does not meet my definition of a "romance". Definitely not my cup of tea.

I loved this book and it hit the right balance between discipline and love. It seems rare to find books like these in the kinky genre. I felt like the author was in a league of her own with writing unlike most books I've read and it was really unique.
What a touching and wonderful start to a really terrific series... This first book of is in no way a romance (nice and very sweet), but as your read the next of the series, romance comes in... Anyway, I really loved this series, and hope that it is a nice long series...
