Grillparzer überträgt die mittelalterliche Melusinengeschichte in den romantischen Raum. Sein Protagonist Raimund ist kein in Schuld verstrickter Herrscher, sondern ein unbestimmt Sehnender, der hin- und hergerissen ist zwischen einer männlich codierten, rationalen und auf Tätigkeit ausgerichteten Menschenwelt und der kontemplativ-weiblichen Kunstwelt Melusinas. Aufgegriffen wird so die für die Romantik typische Kunst-Leben-Problematik, aus der Raimund sich nur im Tod befreien kann.

Grillparzers dramatischer Text wird den heutigen Unterhaltungsleser kaum begeistern. Wer allerdings einen Zugang zur romantischen Poetologie hat, wird an diesem sehr hübsch geschriebenen Libretto seine Freude haben.
