More Lib/E: How to Move from Activity for God to Intimacy with God

Rate this book
It wasn’t supposed to be this way. We start out with hearts brimming with hope and excitement. And that energy carries us for awhile, maybe even years. But one day we suddenly find ourselves like the man in the Prodigal Son half-dead, going through the dreaded motions hoping no one around us notices. But they do. It’s not that we’ve stopped loving God, but it’s just that things have happened along the way that have caused us to settle for a small life, one defined primarily by activity for God. We look around and It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Author Greg Hawkins knows that reality first-hand. He also knows there is something beyond that reality if we have the courage to step out and hope once more. Far from simply more stuff to do, Greg shares the necessary and doable shifts in our thought and language that lead to true intimacy with God. That’s the life of more we’ve hoped for all along, the life where everything is waiting for us!

I had just finished reading the book, "Move," on which the premise of this book was based. 'Move' is a data driven book that analyzes the results of over 1,000 church responses to faith practices and individual closeness to Christ. It is most helpful to church staff (to implement). Hawkins helped analyze the results of the survey.

I was expecting the same from "More." I was wrong.

More is the personal account of Hawkins' embrace of the "Move" survey results. That means that this book is almost autobiographical in nature, and he does use a lot of personal witness to underline his points.

The writing is narrative, the summaries for practices are good. And, I suspect that Hawkins' target audience are those who are 'stuck' in their faith. What next? Why isn't this all working? Should I just give up?

Hawkins provides a credible argument (and backs it up) that our life with God is at its best when we agree to die ourselves for God, and when when we incorporate God into every aspect of our lives. How does one do that? How to we die, and still live (even better than before)? That's for Hawkins to answer in his book; he gives practical advice for Christians who might be struggling to give up control.

Everyone will not enjoy this book; as I mentioned before, those who are 'stuck' in their faith might benefit from Hawkins' suggestions most. But I'll also point out that, as Christians, we are not called to only move our own faith, but also to make disciples of others. As a result, if you, personally are not stuck, consider reading from the perspective of one who is. With that in mind, you might learn how to help others get 'unstuck' in their search for more meaning in their relationship with God.

A great read but I sadly couldn’t finish due to not being interested anymore.

I love the way Hawkins writes as it is so relatable and almost like a blog post, making his messages easy to understand. He offers great advice for Christians seeking to renew and transform their spiritual life with God by providing his own personal experiences.

It was super well done and a pleasure to read the chapters I did.

I could not put this book down! If you are looking to deepen your intimacy with Christ, this book is a great place to start. I’m excited to step in to a life of more, as daunting as it seems to let go of what I have now. Hawkins’ gentle explanation has completely transformed how I view my relationship with God. Eternally grateful for the much needed wake up call.

This book has changed my entire life, and I'm not exaggerating. Found it as Dollar Tree, and it's the best dollar I've ever spent. If you find it, buy it. If it touches you like it did me, you won't regret it.

Do you feel that life isn't supposed to be this way? Do you feel like you were made for more, for that abundant life Jesus promised?

Hawkins has written this book because he believes “each of us can experience the more that God has for us right here, right now.” (9) He questioned half a million church attendees about their spiritual lives. This book contains what God revealed through that research.

He found out that many of his assumptions about what produced spiritual growth were wrong. Involvement in church activities did not predict a greater spiritual growth, did not lead to greater intimacy with God nor one becoming a more loving person. He wrote a book for church leaders about those findings.

But what about individuals? Hawkins talked with people who lived an abundant life. He found that intimacy with God was the key to that life of “more.” He gives six strategic changes in thinking and how we practice our faith that are necessary to live the life God intended. Shifts in thinking include leaving the kingdom of “me,” going from “me” to “we” (including God in you), knowing the Bible is essential to survival, knowing that we're dead, and there is only now. Changes in our faith practice include saying we're sorry to God (confession), times of stillness, building a web of relationships, being present in the moment and emptying ourselves.

I am impressed with this book. Hawkins writes, “We were created for deep intimacy and oneness with God.” (51) He says it is something we cannot even imagine. But we can move ourselves toward that reality. Hawkins' suggested changes in thinking and faith practice rang true to me. The abundant life is available but we will not approach it unless we make some changes.

I recommend this book to Christians who long for more in their spiritual life. Hawkins provides the framework but each believer must contemplate the changes in thinking and behaving. It is a continuing journey, he says. Each day, believers can have deeper intimacy with God and more abundant lives.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

I received this book from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review...

I found this to be a decent, well-written and well-organized book that is great for people who are looking for a deeper and more meaningful connection with God. I did find this more on the "average" side of religious books. I've read many of them throughout my life, and find they are a dime a dozen. Though this book was good, there isn't much of a difference from the many others that share the same point of views. I learned nothing new.

This book was a great read and there were many answers from God through this writer. I recommend this book to others who are looking for more in their spiritual walk with God. Thank you for writing this book as it spoke to me and allowed me to see things in different points of view.
