As Bonus Material included in each volume, chess games are explained move by move to allow you to better understand the strategy. To facilitate further understanding, a chess lexicon and annotations are included.
Big improvement from the first volume in a Chess perspective. Actual games are being played & the move sequences make sense. Even getting a game breakdown between 2 main characters at the back of the book. I hope they keep getting more detailed Chess wise as these are introductions to the game
"Blitz Vol 2" is a nice continuation of the plot from book 1. What I like about this book is how it shows that while Tom has improved significantly and is very skilled, he still struggles with the psychological aspect of the game. From hunger pangs to worry to a grudge (albeit an understandable one), his emotions do sometimes get the best of him. It leads him to struggle and make mistakes. That leads to great tension in the book and suspense, particularly in his match against Laurent. It also allows for much opportunity for growth.
Indeed, his character arc continues to be solid. Whereas before he would just be impulsive and solely focused on winning Harmony's heart, he is more accepting of his fellow chess club and team members as friends. He also continues to be focused on excelling at the game. I look forward to seeing how future books will have him address the psychological aspect of the game too.
I like how the book has given us some more depth into the side characters. There is a great backstory for Anne and why she both got interested in chess and is determined to succeed. We also learn more about Laurent's home life and a potential reason for his snobbish attitude. There is some nice mystery about the Yoruzudou owner too.
With that said, the number of characters continues to grow. There are a lot of characters and I do wonder if they all will be fully fleshed out. The story did jump a couple of times from Tom's story to Karl's decision to watch Riko to Riko herself to Garry Kasparov organizing the international tournament. There are a lot of storylines and it sometimes can be a challenge to keep track of the characters.
The story itself continues to be fast paced and largely focused on the game. That keeps it exciting, but sometimes, it feels like it's moving a bit too fast.
Still though, the story is good overall and I enjoyed it. The art is good. I also like how we get to see the chess matches pictured as medieval duels too. It's fun. I am enjoying this series.
I read this second volume on Hoopla after reading the first a while back. It's nothing super stellar but it handles chess play, friendships, and romantic relationships in this action-packed graphic novel with bright graphics and movement in a way that engages readers who may or may not love chess.
