Megan Jennings has great admiration for Mary Kingsley and her search for a divine appointment from God. An instructor at a local college Megan is literally following in the footsteps of Ms. Kingsley in order to provide an example to her students. Dressed in Victorian era attire she launches on an inexpensive tour of West Africa in search of what could prove to be her own divine appointment. As her flight is about to leave Paris she is moved to first class accommodations apart from her tour group, which she assumes is good luck on her part. This is one of many digressions from her charted course. Megan meets people of questionable character, but her strong and opinionated nature is her strength. As her digression from the tour leads her through dangerous yet picturesque African territory, Megan follows her instincts. Not knowing who she can trust Megan relies on her instincts in following what she believes may be God's divine appointment for her life.

Gold Trap is a fast-paced "trip" through uncharted territory! Lilly Maytree obviously has researched her story in great depth. Her characters are as varied as her main character's distractions from the charted path. Variety is the spice in this novel. The main character is involved in more far-fetched predicaments than one can imagine, but in following the adventures of Mary Kingsley the author's creativity is authentic. I enjoyed the distraction that this book offered me. I had no idea what to expect from this story, but the adventure kept me pretty well confined to my favorite chair!

The Gold Trap by Lilly Maytree was a pleasant change of pace. She writes about her visit to Africa. While on tour, she gets sidetracked by some questionable characters. What her trip really entails is her search for her "Divine Appointment."

Read her book and enjoy the entertaining trip filled with all sorts of experiences:leopards, crocodiles, and a pink hippo..

About the Book:

I simply wanted to step out of my ordinary life and find the Divine Appointment God had planned for me. I'd read about Mary Kinglsey, and it occurred to me that if I truly wanted to share an historical biography with my students, hers was it. So (with much trepidation) I booked the cheapest tour I could find to visit the Dark Continent of Africa. Who knew I'd meet a psychic named Vidalia (after the onion?) - not that I should have been surprised (after all, Bremen Tours specialized in "Voodoo relics of the Dark Continent," or so it was emblazoned on their carry-alls, one of which I owned). But life got really strange when I met a mad (or was he drunk?) professor, a dashing prince (or possibly, the villain), a village headman (the warrior king? Or the prince of thieves?) and a witchdoctor who was neither witch nor doctor, but rather the sinister embodiment of a charlatan who preyed on tourists...and let's not forget the man who started the whole mess-an embezzler-turned-kidnapper...of me! And that's not to mention floating down a river full of crocodiles, two boys who wanted to hold me for ransom, an earthquake, a cave-in, the leopard in my bed, and a pink hippopotamus. In the end, my Divine Appointment from God held mystery, excitement and a whole lot more. Enjoy my adventure, Dear Reader, because I did!

My Review:

Mary Kingsley was a female explorer back in the 1800's and I believe this books main character is fascinated by this woman so much so that she wishes you to many things with her life based on some of Mary Kingsley's exploits. She goes along on this trek to search for divine appointment and gets so much more adventure than she expected. I love the way the author wrote about and introduced us to the main character; Megan, she is funny and quirky. Her done to earth personality though could get her into trouble or could send her on a HUGE adventure.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from bookfun.org.

This is an intriguing, quirky story with a delightfully unusual heroine,Meg, who is just trying to live out “her destiny”. She is full of contradictions, at times sure of herself and what she believes, and at other times, flustered and bewildered. She is a woman of faith who takes a voodoo tour of Africa because it is cheap way to travel. She plans to start her dream of making documentary films with “Following the Footsteps of Mary Kingsley”( who explored Africa in 1890s), but her plans are waylaid by trying to be a Good Samaritan to a drunken seatmate on the flight to Africa. The craziness just picks up from there as suspense and action escalate.

It is not just Meg who is confused and not sure what will happen next. The reader is struggling along with her to figure out what is going on. Why is she wearing authentic Victorian clothes when she is obviously a modern woman? Who is the mysterious man in the café in Paris and what does he want? Why did the Professor upgrade her airline ticket to first class? How does the man with the wheelchair know her name? Added to the mix there is the strange conversation she overhears at the airport, and an unsettling encounter with a psychic with a voodoo doll in her purse. Through it all, Meg is wondering: If one misses a divine appointment, does God give you another chance?

Megan is a great character- naïve, good-intentioned, feisty, and a magnet for trouble. Her story seems to parallel the bits of Mary Kingsley’s life quoted at the beginning of each chapter. I thoroughly enjoyed this cute, funny adventure story and highly recommend it as such.

I received the review copy from the author, but the opinions expressed are solely my own.

This has been my first experience reading a book by Lilly Maytree. This book is filled with details about everything, which to me is great, love the details in this book, describing every feeling, the surrounding towns, jungles, rivers and boats.
Meagan Jennings has a dream, one she is putting into action, all by herself. Well, she thinks she's all by herself, but gets drawn in to a huge action/drama life in the wilds of West Africa. Meagan has studied the travels of Mary Kingsley and has her cameras along to film the places where Mary walked, see the sights that Mary saw and experience West Africa up close and personal. And, she is open to watching for divine appointments. Of course, there is some romance there also.
I like the fact that Mary Kingsley is a real person, and the author uses clips from her writings at the beginning of each chapter. At the end of the book she tells you where you can go online and order the book for free.
There is so much going on every minute through the whole book, not a dull minute shows up anywhere. So many different characters, sometimes a little hard to keep track of each one, until you know the secret.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, especially if you want to learn some about West Africa. I was given this book by BookFun in exchange for my honest review.

Of course I have read this book (oh, so many times!) because I wrote it. And I would recommend it to, um... let me see... anyone who is interested in divine appointments and thinks they might have one in their future... or, just readers who like an adventure (which I know a lot about, because I happened to have married adventure - but that's another story). Am I in the habit of reviewing my own books? Heavens no!

I just happened to end up on this form when I was trying to put a copy of GOLD TRAP up on the bookshelf they gave me when I joined this club. Which I've discovered is not really a bookshelf, at all, but a veritable hall of mirrors where one could end up in any number of strange places. So, my apologies to the GOODREADS community for such bad manners, and I will now go back to looking for a way out. Oh, yes, and if any of you find me still wandering around in here three days from now, please send help...

Beg pardon...

Good grief! Now, I've even dropped my paddle...

PS... And there is indeed a cover for my book -- a very beautiful one -- but I can't imagine where that got off to, either. However, there's a picture of it over at http://www.LillyMaytree.com if you would like to see it for yourself.

I received a copy of this book from the author in a giveaway on The Book Club Network (TBCN) in return for my honest opinion. Let me start off by saying that I have definitely found another author to add to my list of favorites!

What an adventure! This story will take you on such a journey that you will not want to put the book down. The author has such a unique and inspirational writing style. I absolutely love how she chose to base a lot of her story around the life of a person that actually existed, Mary Kingsley. I had never heard of Mary Kingsley until reading this story, but I am extremely motivated to find out more about her. Although this is a wonderful work of fiction, the author also did a great job at intertwining elements of non-fiction to the point where I felt as if I learned something new! The main character, Meg, loosely represents Mary Kingsley herself. Throughout the story, Meg’s endeavors built upon each other in such a way that kept me glued to the pages, even through weary eyes! This book is a truly exhilarating tale of adventure, with a hint of romance, and is one you are sure to enjoy! I am going to spread the word about this author as she is definitely one to watch! I can’t wait to read more from her!

Gold Trap by Lilly Maytree
Meg Jennings is all set to take her dream vacation following in the foot steps of the historical Mary Kingsley. She sets out on a budget tour to make a documentary, but gets a lot more than she bargained for. She meets Professor Anderson on a flight to Africa and her life is turned upside down. His son Tom accuses her of thief, kidnapping and forces her to join him in the search for his father. So the cross country adventure begins. Will she find her God given destiny on this adventure, get her documentary and fall head over heels in love with her prince charming? You will have to read this great book by Lily Maytree to find out. I will tell you this you will meet a list of crazy ludicrous characters with personalities to match. I want to thank the author Lily Maytree and publisher for bringing good clean Christian books like this one to readers like me. I would also like to thank The Book Club Network Inc. for providing me with this book in exchange for my honest review.

As a former teacher, I could totally relate to wanting to do something that would capture the interest of your students. This is the premise behind the main character, Megan's trip to Africa. She tries to imitate a famous female explorer, Mary Kingsley from the late 1800's, and replicate her adventures while filming, to show her students.
Things don't go as planned, pretty much from the start, and Megan ends up with more adventure than she had bargained for, unexpected romance included. This is an interesting book, showing us Africa with both positive and negative attributes. Megan is a Christian and she looks for Divine Appointment on this trip.
I found this book intriguing, becoming engrossed enough in the story to "argue" out loud with Megan when I felt she was messing up. You'll enjoy it!

Absolutely loved this book. Gold Trap was a great adventure from beginning to end. A young school teacher, Megan takes off on an adventure to Africa to bring history to life for her students. She plans to follow in the footsteps of a famous female explorer, Mary Kingsley from the late 1800's, and capture the adventure on film for her students. The story remains very upbeat even as she is pulled away from her scheduled tour & into a mystery where up until the very end you & she will not be sure who can be trusted or which way to turn. I couldn't put it down. My parents have read & loved it & I have recommended to my niece & anyone else who would listen. A great read for anyone of any age.

4 ½ stars!!!

From the beginning of the story Megan Jennings takes you on a grand adventure as she follows the historical path of Mary Kingsley to Africa and tries not to miss “a divine appointment”. Most of us have a list in our head of places we’d like to see, things we’d like to do in our lifetime – Megan has a written “List of Small Things to Accomplish” that she carries with her. Definitely the mind and spirit of an adventurer, but from the troubles she finds herself in, she is obviously not experienced with the ways of the world and the darkness that lurks there.

From the handsome man she meets in the café in Paris, to the Professor and Gilbert, Ms. Maytree takes us on a whirlwind tour where we meet lots of interesting characters and find ourselves in several questionable situations. What a grand adventure it really is! I hope you join her in this adventure!

This book was like a breath of fresh air. It had quirky characters, romance, adventure, mystery and danger. It was just fun. I really liked how Lilly Maytree gave her characters such a unique voice in her storytelling. Another reviewer described this book as Jane Austen meets Indiana Jones. I would agree. The romance was my absolute favorite part. It was sigh worthy. I also wanted to state that it was a clever idea Meg had to bring history alive to her students. Read the book to find out what I mean. I also really liked the front cover. And the back blurb was probably the best I have ever read. This book is one of my top ten reads for this year. I will probably reread it many times. Lilly Maytree is a new author to me but I look forward to reading her next books. Especially looking forward to The Pandora Box. I was provided this book through bookfun.org and the opinions are my own.

This is one of the most unique stories I've read in quite a while! Meg, the woman who decides to follow in the footsteps of Mary Kingsley, is a funny, quirky lady who ends up in the craziest situations! The romance is cute, though I wasn't sure if her mystery man was a good guy or not for most of the story. It was interesting to see what a different culture there is in the parts of Africa she visited, but I want to see it even more after reading this book, though definitely not with a voodoo tour! I also liked her take on Divine Appointments and faith; it gives you something to think about. The story got a little convoluted near the end, but I enjoyed it overall. This was a new author to me and I plan on checking out her other books.

This is the first book I have read by Lilly Maytree and look forward to reading more.
In wanting to find the divine appointment that God has for her, Meg sets out on an adventure that was more that she could have imagined. Her venture was based on the exploits of Mary Kingsley an explorer from the 1800's. I like how each chapter begins with a quote by Mary Kingsley. The details to the characters, plot, scenery, and culture of West Africa draw you into the story and I could picture everything. It is action packed and love how the romance evolves. Well written. Really enjoyed this book.

Also liked the historical information Lilly gives us about Mary Kingsley.

I received this book from bookfun.org for my honest opinion and review.

Gold Trap

By: Lily Maytree

Publisher: Pelican Books

Megan is a Christian who goes looking for a divine appointment. She wants to follow in the famous,

Victorian African explorer, Mary Kingsley. Meg is a teacher and she wants to make a film of her trip to Africa to show to her students. From the start of her trip things do not go as she plans. She has one mishap after another and more adventure than she can handle. Megan does find her divine appointment in Tom, the son of the man who she sits by in first class on the plane from Paris to Africa. This is fun, adventurous, romantic story. It reminds me of the Indiana Jones and Romancing the Stone movies. A great read. I couldn't put it down. I finished it in 1 day.

Story of adventure to Africa. School teacher Meg very strong minded decides she is going to pursue what she wants. Through her teaching history discovers Mary Kingsley. Things are not same now in the time of now as it would have been back in the time that Mary ventured there. Meg tried to follow her footsteps in this great adventure.
I would say this book will keep you on edge and is very fast paced. I think even young people would love this great adventure.
Thanks BookFun.org and TBCN for giving me this book that I might post my own honest review. Thanks Fred St. Laurent.

Gold Trap is the first book I read by Lily Maytree but will not be the last. She has a way of keeping your attention from the beginning to end of the story. This story revolves around a trip to Africa and following the footsteps of a famous female explorer. She believes in "Divine Appointment" and feels the trip illustrates how her life is finding it. I find the book an enjoyable and interesting adventure story. I can't wait to read another of this author's books.

This book was very different than what I am used to reading. That being said, it was great! Meg is the main character and she goes through a great adventure while along the way questioning whether we have divine appointments. It has romance, comedy and adventure all rolled in one. This is the first time I've read a book by Lilly Mantree and I would read more books by her. This book was a very easy read. I would recommend it to everyone! I received this book from bookfun for my honest opinion.

This was a wonderful book and I loved Meg; I loved her independence and how outspoken she was. I enjoyed the banter between Meg and Tom and the little nuggets of scripture that was interwoven throughout the book was awesome. The adventure was great and Meg's list and rules added spice to the story.

Very enjoyable. Not sure that I thought the author's view of the African people was all that authentic but that didn't spoil the story for me.
