Janette Sebring Lowrey (March 2, 1892 – March 17, 1986) was an American children's writer, best known for writing the beloved children's classic, The Poky Little Puppy.
Janette Sebring Lowrey was born in Orange, Texas. Lowrey wrote dozens of books aimed at children and young adults from the 1930s to the 1970s, but The Poky Little Puppy remains her best known, selling over 15 million copies worldwide. Another well-known work of hers was Margaret, a historical fiction young adult novel, which was published in 1950. It was adapted into Walt Disney Presents: Annette, a TV serial which aired on The Mickey Mouse Club in 1958.
Despite her success as an author, Lowrey herself remained in relative obscurity.
Reading some of the stories in this collection multiple times per day. Favorites so far: The Color Kittens, The Three Bears, The Boy and the Tigers, Good Night Little Bear and The Wonderful House. Add the Pokey Puppy, which my son just allowed me to read to him the first time over Christmas to the list of favorites. I think the last two we haven't read are perhaps of no interest to him. I'm going to call this one finished now.
My boys are all loving these. And yes, my 10 and 9 year olds read them to themselves or listen while I read them.
This collection contains:
The Poky Little Puppy Baby Bear The Color Kittens Good Night, Little Bear The Wonderful House The Sleepy Book The Three Bears The Boy and the Tigers How the Turtle Got Its Shell
I love these collection books and love the time we're spending all curled up together, reading.
Some stories are better than others, of course. Some stories I remember from my own childhood, some are completely new to me.
Overall it's a nice collection of quick stories to read to children. I liked color kittens best, my daughter liked baby dear.
The last story, a series of little stories about how the turtle got his shell didn't seem to fit at all and was very differently structured from the others
Cooper and I are currently making our way through this collection. We both really like the variety and the stories are very classic. This reminds me of being young!
