Sharon C. Williams is a native of New England raised in Northern Maine. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and son. She is also owned by a flock of birds
Sharon has a B. S. degree in Chemistry. She loves to read, sketch, take pictures, walk, exercise, go to the movies, and listen to music. She is a budding bird watcher, and knits on the side. She is a huge sports fan of baseball, basketball, hockey, and football. She is also a shutterbug and is always looking for the next big shot.
Sharon tends to write by long hand as the flow works better for her this way. Her bookshelf consists of works written by Stephen King, Agatha Christie, Bentley Little, and James Patterson. The best advice she has ever received about writing was to write about what you know. Her first thought was, “Yeah right,” but it really is that easy. A writer just needs to know a little tidbit to turn it into a short story, and soon enough, there's a book.
Two of her short stories were published in the anthology, Cassandra's Roadhouse, and two in the Dragons in the Attic anthology, which was written by her writing group, The Wonder Chicks. Her children's chapter book, Jasper, Amazon Parrot: A Rainforest Adventure, and Jasper: Amazon Friends and Family, was released by Fountain Blue Publishing in 2013 and 2015. Volume three, "Jasper, Amazon Parrot: The Perils of The Jungle", was released in November of 2019. Her comedy novel about her war with her backyard squirrels, Squirrel Mafia, was also released in the spring of 2015. Her latest book, “Everyday Musings” which is a collection of short stories and poems was released Sept. 30th, 2016
As of 2016 Sharon has started an author'scoaching and beta reading service.
Children's books come in all varieties, shapes, and sizes. Sharon C. Williams offers a new series about Jasper the Amazon Parrot who has adventures in the rain forest. This is my first book by the author and won't be the last... I've already read the first two in the series but will focus on the debut in this review.
Considered chapter books, this one has nine chapters and was published in 2019 with great success. The story begins when two baby parrots hatch from eggs in their mother's nest. They face a bunch of danger in the Amazon, especially when they get curious and try to fly too early on their own while their mother is away securing dinner.
The cover is gorgeous, and I'm certain it would catch any kid's eye in the store. The language is on target for the age range, and this brought back memories of my classes on Reading and Children's Literature when I was in college several years ago. I could easily see reading one chapter a night with a young kid, then taking it a step further by researching pictures on the internet, applying the lessons to real-life dangers, and talking about the underlying themes behind the words and scenes.
Williams has created a wonderful cast of friends, including a monkey and a sloth. There are humorous and serious moments, and readers will quickly latch on to the curious but lovable personalities of the two main parrot babies. Even Momma bird has the perfect amount of spunk and maternal instincts.
A definite recommend for youngsters and teachers... keep an eye on this series and author. I see good things happening here!
Book one in the Jasper the Parrot series begins with the hatching of Jasper and his brother Willie and their first adventures in the Rainforest from dealing with dangerous red ants to trying to fly before their wings are ready. Their mum Sally certainly has her work cut out with the two lively characters.
The book is very imaginative and has a lot of poignant moments that will teach children right from wrong, such as not doing something you know is wrong just because someone else wants you too. The two parrots are both humorous and lovable and they were enjoyable to read about.
The book is split into nine chapters which are each quite short and I read the book in under thirty minutes, though a child would probably take longer. It is the perfect size for those that would like to move on for picture books but are not ready yet for longer stories.
My only disappointment is that the book didn’t contain any illustrations, I don’t know whether this is just my advance copy (I checked on look inside on Amazon and didn’t see any either). With the front cover being so colourful and the book being, in my opinion, a step up from picture books, I think it needs at least one illustration, whether colourful or black and white per chapter, but like I said that is just my preference.
Overall, it is a lovely book that will keep children entertained from beginning to end as they follow Jasper and his one day younger brother Willie who finds themselves in some strange, scary, and sometimes amusing situations. It is also educational.
This was an adorable story, full of kid advice, some chuckles and adventure. I liked the brotherly camaraderie between Jasper and Willie, and the friendships formed with Charlie (a spider monkey) and George (a sloth). The tone throughout the story is friendly and lighthearted, the kind of story that teaches kids – and some grownups – a thing or two about animals, the Amazonian wild life, responsibilities, precautions and friendship. I had an “Uh oh” moment toward the end, but everything panned out great! I recommend it to children of any age, as well as middle graders looking for some light read.
An absolutely fun, brilliant book with humor and adventure, just perfect for kids of 5 to 8 years and adults like me who enjoy the innocence that is enclosed within the words.
Jasper was the Amazon parrot with a baby brother Willie, the book followed their lives from the time they hatched until they learned to fly. Perils and romps went hand in hand as they learned how to negotiate through their life journey. This was book 1.
My first book by author Sharon C. Williams, I was quickly pulled into the story which so lovingly brought Jasper and his brother into my life. There was love in the family, with the mother guiding them through various facets of their lives.
The dialogues and prose had me smiling as both brothers tried to find their way. Falling down on their bums while learning to fly was quite humorous. The author knew how to interject the prose with subtle lessons along with loads of humor. The world widened for these kiddos when they explored the skies.
New friends like the spider monkey Charlie and sloth George kept the prose interesting. The writing was quite superfluous. This was one book I would love to read out to my niece. The cover too, I was sure, would attract all kids.
This book is a cute story with parrots as the main characters. It's unique to me because I've never read anything like that!
While I was enjoying the story I found some little things that bothered me a bit. The jealousy at the beginning of the book was something that I felt wasn't necessary to the story. Also in the middle part some things were a tad over the top. Like writing "Ahh" with 31 H's (I counted them), "Whee" with 28 E's and writing the word So as Soooooooooooooooooo. The book didn't need that.
While coming along with Jasper on his adventures I loved how the scenery was portrayed. I love the amazon, I love watching documentaries about nature, so the way the amazon was portrayed really made me happy. The colours were described as very vibrant and all the plants and wildlife were there. That's what I liked the most.
From the cheery, bright colors on the cover to the delightful tale of two young parrots learning to spread their wings in their rainforest home, Sharon C. Williams’ A RAINFOREST ADVENTURE is the perfect tale for young/future readers!
Jasper and his younger brother Willie are finally grown up enough to see the world, or so they think. Like any child, their foray into the beginnings of independence may just be a little too much for them to handle, and quite worrisome for their mother…but there is a whole world to explore and patience is not one of his strong points!
Sweet, warm and so easy to relate to, this tale is perfect for family reading and discussion after as children can see themselves in Jasper and Willie, because, really, the younger we are, the more we want to grow up quickly! Wonderful reading, short, easy to understand and simply magical! This bite-sized chapter book makes a fabulous gift! Definitely a hidden gem for younger readers to enjoy!
I received a complimentary copy from Sharon C. Williams! This is my honest and voluntary review.
Series: Jasper - Amazon Parrot - Book 1 Publisher : Peculiar Possum Books - A Next Chapter Imprint; 3rd Edition (July 9, 2019) Genre: Children's Adventures Print Length : 48 pages Available from: Amazon For Reviews, Giveaways, Fabulous Book News, follow: http://tometender.blogspot.com
A gentle little tale of Jasper, a fledgling, yellow cheeked Amazon parrot who, accompanied by his little brother, Willie, learns about his home in the Amazon Rainforest. The brothers get into some scrapes together as they learn about the dangers they can encounter as youngsters alone on the forest floor and the friends they can make. A simple tale with a strong sense of right and wrong. Young readers will learn the importance of listening to their mother and to older, more experienced friends, even if those friends come from a totally different background. I recommend this book.
This delightful story is a real page-turner for children of all ages.
The author skilfully combines minor perils which will thrill her young audience, with a number of life lessons for growing minds.
The underlying theme of going out into the world, meeting new friends and adapting to everyone's differences, is dealt with in an entertaining and educational way.
Many young readers will readily identify with Jasper, the Amazon Parrot's experiences, which include peer pressure, the realisation that being in charge isn't all a bed of rises, and the innocent acceptance of everyone's cultural and physical differences.
Each bite-sized chapter is self contained, while progressing the overall story arc of Jasper growing up, meaning developing minds will feel full satisfaction as each one ends, but will be eager to hear about the next adventure.
This is a short fun-filled book that tells the tale of Jasper, Willie and Charlie. From the moment they met, they became friends and enjoy each other's company. The mother parrot an excellent example of parental guidance as they navigate through the forest.
The story begins the moment Jasper hatched, seeing his mother for the first time. The adventures on his journey taught him all about life and how big it really is. At first, he had to learn about sibling jealousy and what it means to be part of a family. Learning to fly his next venture he definitely enjoys.
Through Jasper's eyes, you discover his world which began in the hole of a tree very high up. At first, the dizzy height had him scared but soon he learned to trust his mother and instinct to take that first step. The book is informative and well suited for younger readers. Life lessons a part of growing up wonderfully told.
A perfect gift for any child that wants to learn more about birds, and the world around them.
Jasper, Amazon Parrot is one of those stories that will capture your heart in more ways than one. A delightful tale about a young parrot and his friends who learn a lot about life in the Amazon jungle, it's a story you'll definitely want to read over and over again. Be it for yourself or with your children.
Sharon tells a story where anyone of any age can relate to Jasper, Willy, and the myriad of friends they make along the way. She also intersperses every day happenings into the story that are meant to be lessons learned along the way. From Jasper's innocent wonderings about the world he lives in to being able to help those in need along the way, this book will help to further open the minds of those who take the time to read it.
Jasper is based upon her own beautiful parrot who just happens to be a Yellow Cheeked Amazon parrot himself. Utilizing Jasper as the focal point of this story, Sharon gives us an in-depth look at the goings-on of everyday life in the jungle. A true keeper, this book is one you'll love from the moment you begin reading it.
When I first received this book, I was enthralled by the colorful cover. It instantly brightened my mood and I just KNEW I was going to enjoy this book. As I started reading it, I was absolutely captivated by the story line, the characters, and the way in which it was written. It appealed to me as an adult, yet I could see how it could still be perfect for a child. Jasper and his brother, Willie, have some pretty interesting adventures that will have you worried about them, laughing, smiling, sighing with relief, and shaking your head! A must read!
Short but sweet! As a teacher I think I will get the printed version of this book for my classroom.I have read it to children as an ebook on my Kindle fire and they just love the colourful illustrations. It also led to discussions about the Amazon and how different the weather would be compared to England.Enjoyable picture book!
From beginning to end, this tale takes flight on the wings of an exciting adventure in one of the most mysterious and exciting places in the world.
After hatching, Jasper waits to see if the last egg might bring a sibling for him, and sure enough, he gets exactly that what he wished for! His brother is quite the adventurer, and after the two decide they're going to learn how to fly, the fun begins...and the worries for their mother. But Jasper has everything in grip. Sort of. With the friendship of a spider monkey, the group explores the forest around them. And while Jasper tries his best to be an awesome big, responsible brother, there are many things in store for them.
Jasper is a wonderful parrot. He's got heart, determination, and a bit of curiosity. In other words, he's the perfect bird to set out and discover the world around him...and some very unexpected other things as well. From the very first page, the story grabs and keeps the reader engaged all the way through. The other characters carry quite a bit of personality and make sure there's never a boring moment. But then, with Jasper, his brother and their friend, they do have their hands full. The are moments of tension, a pinch of mystery, and giggles too. It's a lovely mix.
The rainforest setting and it's creatures make for a wonderful setting. The author does a nice job of letting the scenery open up without falling into the danger of offering too many, dragging details. Readers are brought into the exotic world and even learn a little along the way. But the main theme still stays with Jasper and whatever he runs into next. There's also a wonderful sense of friendship, learning about the world and, above all, sibling/family relationships. And these are very nicely woven in.
When I saw this was sold as a chapter book, I was expecting...well...a chapter book. But this one is formatted more like a middle grade read. The text and longer chapter lengths are also a bit heavy for beginner readers and suit more sure readers. So, I wouldn't call this a chapter book. However, this does make for a terrific read-aloud for kids up 4 years of age and more reluctant readers will love the short length. Still, I'd recommend this one to 7-9 year olds, since older readers might not be as intrigued with the gentler themes and plot.
Oh, and I should add that I love the cover! Also, this would have been a super read to add a few illustrations to.
Book Analysis – Jasper Amazon Parrot by Sharon C Williams
As I have started to review books, I have realized that an author’s writing style balances out with the genre in which they write. This was the first book I have reviewed for a younger age group as such, but the author illustrates this story through words so well. This story is based around parrots, specifically one who grows up and learns the routes of his young life. Jasper, an observant and smart young bird. This book was inspired by the author’s actual Amazon Parrot, which makes it obvious that this book was heartfelt and sincere to the author. Overall, it was a very fun and easy book to read. The relationship between Jasper and his little brother, Willie, is so sweet and is a great way to expose children and young kids to how sibling relationships should be. The dialogue between the characters was just as normal conversations would be, which made it that much more fun to read since it is with a twisted viewpoint of birds and parrots. The array of nature described in this story, from the storms to the nest to the trees, makes it so visually easy to see what is going on in each scene. Each bird character is carefully introduced to make sure they do not get confused, and the author sought out them perfectly, not once did I get confused! I find this technique very important! The swiftness of the storyline and personality-filled characters make this book a breeze to go through, which is a great way. Younger kids and anyone who reads this short and sweet will be completely engaged throughout the whole book. The pictures are fun to pass through and are a good surprise as they pop up on the pages occasionally as you read, and the structure of the book’s body makes it so much clearer to read. The ending of the book also has some fun surprises for the reader and a description of the author that I thought was so sweet! I do not like to spoil the action of endings of books, so I will not do that now either. But, if you are looking for a light book to read yourself or out loud to anyone, definitely pick this book up and it will have you smiling the whole time.
Jasper (parrot) lives in the rainforest. Sally their mother was sitting on the nest eggs that soon would hatch adding more parrots to the family. Low/behold 1-day Willie (Yellow Cheek Amazon parrot, younger brother) had arrived. Later he was trying his best to flutter/fly. Al was trying to help the boys find their mother. It wasn’t long & Sally found them. Jasper & Willie were going farther on their daily jungle outings. George (sloth) introduced himself.
Where will their adventures take them next?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great colored pictures & proper font & writing style. A very well written children’s parrot adventure story book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s parrot adventure movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini TV series. It wasn’t as exciting as I hoped so I will only rate it at 4/5 stars.
Thank you for the free author; Creativia; 2 edition; eBookStage; Amazon Digital Services LLC.; book Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
I have raised birds and have talked with many owners of Amazon parrots and all express how talented their avian friends are.
I learned that the background to creating this book was the author looking around her home to see if she could locate anything to write about. She landed on her rescued Amazon parrot, Jasper, and decided to create a book series of Jasper's adventures.
In this short children's story, Sally's eggs hatch. Shortly thereafter, Jasper jumps out of the nest with his brother Willie and both fall to the ground. They are separated for a short time and meet Al. Sally appears and they head back home with her. She exits and they find themselves in a precarious position when ants threaten them. With the help of their mother, the brothers survive and when fully fledged they attempt to fly and plop to the ground again. This is when they come upon a spider monkey named Charlie.
Mom returns and reminds them of the importance of flying practice. Mom leaves to scavenge and the two brothers report in to their neighbor, Mrs. Peabody. Soon after the brothers begin a thrilling adventure with Charlie and along the way they meet a sloth named George.
This is a wonderful story about exploration and observation of the nature of the Amazons. I feel the best thing about this detailed adventure is it may help young readers gain a greater appreciation for the most biologically diverse place on Earth.
I received a copy of this book from Sharon Williams.
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
Book one in Jasper the Amazon Parrot series is a story about Jasper and his brother, Willie, who hatch within a day of each other. It’s from Jasper’s perspective, and the first thing he has to learn is that having a brother means he has to share his mother’s love. He soon finds out that being a big brother means that he needs to take a little responsibility and make sure Willie doesn’t get into trouble.
This nine chapter book relates adventures of Jasper and Willie, sometimes along with their friends, a spider monkey and a sloth. It is easy to imagine them in the forest because of the author’s imaginative descriptions. I could almost feel red ants crawling all over me.
I liked the characters. Each one is unique and has qualities that can be found in people, such as Jasper being jealous of Willie but being protective of him at the same time.
A Rainforest Adventure is definitely a book that children will enjoy. It would be a good read-aloud book. The only thing missing is illustrations. The cover is beautiful with vibrant colors. Young children would be more inclined to read this book on their own if it had illustrations, especially some at gorgeous as the cover.
What a fun story!! I love the rainbow of colors used to paint the pictures for this story. The landscape is filled with bright green leaves and trees covered with orchids. The parrot’s feathers are a multitude of hues with a brilliant explosion of violet on their foreheads. The depth of description is enough to engage a young reader without being overwhelming.
From hatching to flying, we get to watch Jasper’s trials and tribulations as he learns to become a responsible young Amazon parrot. Jasper begins life with the uncertainty of being a single child. Does he want a sibling? How can a young parrot know if he wants something he’s never experienced? Does he even have a choice?
Jasper soon learns that having a baby brother may be troublesome but having a constant companion more than makes up for it. Together, Jasper and Willie find adventure and friendship in the jungles of the Amazon rainforest.
I love that the brothers have been taught to respect nature and the habits of others. Being different isn’t bad. Friends can come in all shapes and sizes. Don’t hate what you don’t understand. Army ants may seem evil (I know I wouldn’t want to encounter any of their patrols), but they only do what nature intended.
Line Summary: Jasper is no ordinary parrot. He lives in the rainforest, which secrets he’s eager to explore. Jasper loves his home and his family, and he’s also in charge of his younger brother Willie – a responsibility Jasper takes very seriously.
My Review: Such a lovely fiction for kids. My kid loves it! it’s very easy to read and understand the emotions! Fun to read about the forest and parrots. I was looking for this kind of fiction for my kid quite a long time and I am so happy to find this! When it comes to fiction books for boys, the classics are quite tough for them(at least to my boy) to understand, and other books have dark humor as a theme! (What is it with boys and dark humor books???!!!!) This one is perfect with its little but practical messages!! I am sure the sequels would be much more exciting and fun reads. I highly recommend this for intermediate readers who would enjoy some light fiction books!
A Rainforest Adventure Rainforest Friends and Family Perils of the Jungle
By Sharon C. Williams
George the sloth was nearly as slow as a rock.
“It looks like Willie has gotten himself a stomach bug.” “I got a bug? Get it out, Mama.”
These three charming children’s books are full of witty writing such as the above examples. They introduce young children to the flora and fauna of the Amazon rain forest. They inform as well as entertain while following the lives of a family of Amazon birds. Even adults, or at least this adult – I had no idea Poinsettias grew in the Amazon. The author introduces her readers to an enchanting land that is vital to our world, and that also is quickly disappearing. Perhaps some young reader will grow up with a love of the Amazon engendered by these books and feel empowered to help save it. In any case, the author brings the rainforest alive in a way young children can understand. I would recommend these book for any young reader.
This book was received from the Author/Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was such a cute read and perfect for young readers who are just getting into chapter books.
In this story, Jasper and his brother Willie run into some obstacles and they grow up but they also learn that they are not grown-ups yet they still have a lot to learn. Which is great since there are multiple books in this series. There are a lot of lessons in this book even though it was so short. Kids see they should always tell someone where they are going, listen to your elders, making friends with people that are different from you is a good thing, and more. The more I think about this story the more lessons I realize I read.
If you are a parent or a teacher and you are looking for new books to add to your library this one is perfect. I just wish I would have had this when my daughter was younger.
This is the story of Jasper and his brother, who are parrots that live in the Amazon Rain forest. It was lovely to see the Jungle through the parrots eyes and to watch them grow. I think this book is very descriptive which I think is great for children, it is good for children to read by themselves or with an adult. I am not sure what age this book is aimed at but I would say some children might not know what some of the words mean like ruckus or late bloomer. But all in all I think it is a nice gentle read and an educational read as I found I was learning things about the Rainforest that I didn't know. I look forward to reading book 2 to see what adventures Jasper and hos brother go on next.
Set in the Amazon forest, Jasper and Willie are two newly hatched parrots who live high in the trees with their Mama. After finally learning to fly they decide to visit the jungle floor and meet a variety of animals which include an adorable Spider Monkey, a sleepy Sloth, an army of frightening red ants and even humans. This is a tale of discovery, adventure and self awareness which children will surely love. It is a story about friendship, family love and celebrating differences. Woven throughout are lovely descriptions and information about the rainforest. Beautifully written with humorous dialogue, this book will appeal to both boys and girls. A lovely heart warming read.
Jasper, Amazon Parrot: A Rainforest Adventure is a cute story about Jasper and his brother Willie. They are Parrots living in the Amazon. I read this one to my kids. It took them a little bit to get into the story. It starts with Jasper just hatching and then his brother hatching and my kids were not hooked on the story until after Jasper and Willie try to leave the nest. These two have a great brother relationship. Along the way, they meet new friends, Charlie and George. We definitely will be reading more of Jasper to see what adventures he gets into next.
A Rainforest Adventure is a delightful tale narrated by Jasper, a Yellow Cheek Amazonian parrot. The personification is endearing. From being hatched, attempting to fly, how to be a good sibling, keeping out of danger, and discovering the world around him, as Jasper has his adventures, there’s a moral backdrop, there for the adult reader to use to get children talking and thinking.
Sharon Williams has penned a story perfect for story time with Mum or Dad or Teacher. A Rainforest Adventure is also terrific for early readers after a story they can relate to.
A Rainforest Adventure is a wonderful story. Jaspar has some fun adventures in this book. Not only is it a great way to spark kid's interest in the rainforest and who lives there, it teaches a few life lessons along the way. Friendship is a constant theme, and the animals Jaspar and Willie meet along the way make for a wonderful cast. The short chapters make it perfect for early middle grade readers. Definitely recommend!
This was a cute book, fun adventure, and a few laughs! The relationship between Jasper and Willie is great and I love the new friendship relationships with George and Charlie.
Children will love the fun story and learning things about the animals and the rainforest! This is a great book for children who are just getting into "chapter books."
*Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Jasper and his brother, Willie, live high up in a tree in the Amazon Rainforest. They love hanging out together and they love adventure. Their best friend is a Spider Monkey named Charlie. You’ll enjoy reading of this their adventures in this delightful children’s chapter book. I highly recommend it.
My children love these little books. They thoroughly enjoy each and every story, as if they are all unique and individual without any cause for similarity among them. Even though sometimes, they might seem tedious and repetitive to me as a parent, I do enjoy being able to read short-stories to my children that are clean and respective.
This is a fun story to take young readers into the rain forest to learn about the animals, especially parrots, and how their daily life is lead. The author does a great job with the storyline. This is a good book for readers who have left behind picture books.
