A PEEK INTO THE SECRET WORLD OF THE VOICE ACTOR for those curious, daring or obsessed enough to look....This book offers a comprehensive look at what it takes, what goes on, and what it's like behind the mic from two working pros. In this book, you will * The ins and outs of auditioning * Vocal warm-ups and exercises * Tips for reading copy to maximum effect * Hints to help you stand out * Keys to marketing demo to agent to job * What to expect when you book the job! Filled with anecdotes from 20 VO professionals (actors, writers, casting, directors, engineers, agents) the book is a fun and comprehensive look inside voice-over.
I checked this out for my daughter to read, as she's evinced some interest in voice work, but I figured I'd read through it as well. It's a good introduction to the craft, explaining clearly and concisely many of the features, benefits, challenges, and requirements for being a successful voice actor/voice-over artist. It may lean a little to the optimistic side, but the authors don't have any qualms with saying that it is a challenging business, and not easy to break into. There's a fair bit of humor interspersed - some good, some cringeworthy. I liked the chapter-ending comic strips, although they don't add much to the non-fictional content. The interstitial bits coming from professionals in fields related to voice work were nice too, providing more meat than I had expected. All told, it was an interesting read with a fair bit of advice that is applicable even if you aren't interested in being a voice actor, and it should serve as a strong starting point for anyone who is.
"...Voice-Over Voice Actor is a truly fantastic book. The back cover says it is "the coolest book on voice-over out there" and while I haven't seen or read any others on this topic, the claim seems plausible...Lowenthal and Platt have given us something not only extremely informative, but it's written conversationally, which makes it something that is also charming and fun to read...I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in pursuing voice-over professionally and to people who are just generally interested in the field. I will also say, though, that a great many of the tips and suggestions that are offered in this book could reasonably be applied to the pursuit of ANY profession or endeavour, such as marketing yourself and maintaining a certain level of professionalism (even while having fun). So really, I'd recommend that everyone read this book."

The book was very helpful and also proves to be a great resource book as well that I have every intention on going back to and reviewing. The warm ups are especially fun and I genuinely appreciate all the advice given. This book is a good start for those who are interested in becoming a voice-over actor even if it's for your own hobby or just to learn something new and cool.
Great and amusing, even too amusing 😁😊 loved it dearly and enjoyed it so much 💗 I'm interested in voice-over acting since my early years so this book did great job for me to tell me about basics.
Voice-Over Voice Actor reads easily and quickly and that is good. Its conversational tone keeps you interested and learning without being didactic or dogmatic. This book makes the material fun, yet crams copious amounts of information into a mere 230 pages. A reader can finish this book within a few hours and then spend many years following its advice and building a career instead of squandering months trying to wade through verbose text and redundancy.
Yuri and Tara intend this book for aspiring Voice Actors, but I think it is useful to anyone who intends to work in animation, video games, or other areas of entertainment requiring voice work. I only occasionally do voice work (primarily when necessary or when doing puppetry), but I do often direct or work directly with voice actors. After reading this book, I feel like I better understand the industry and can work more efficiently with voice actors. I also find the advice for building a career as a VO is germane to many areas of entertainment outside of voice acting.
If you want to be a voice actor or work with voice actors, it would be irresponsible not to read this book.
Great, easy to read and accessible book for anyone just getting started in the voice over world, or even just curious about what it entails. If you like what you read, and fail to be intimidated, then move on to the next stage - workshops, training, more "in-depth" books like The Art of Voice Acting, etc. If you are sad to realize that animation is only about 3% of the voice over world, then maybe this is your chance to stop and not invest anymore money or time into the field.
I've since taken a couple of "serious" workshops in voice over, as well as delved into limitless hours of internet research, and everything that Yuri and Tara say are right on target.
This is a great book for voice acting. Unfortunately we don't live in LA or NY. I'd like to see a book with more info about working in smaller markets. I'm quite sure there are jobs in those areas as well. Any recommendations?
As someone who has just started in the world of voiceover, this book was easy to read and fun. As I am so new to this market, it is difficult to say whether the book was very useful or not, but so far so good!
As someone beginning to study the world of voiceover, this is a great resource, even something that can be useful for all levels of VO artists. It was written in an entertaining style, and I enjoyed the snippets of info thrown in throughout the book and the sample scripts in the back.
Very informative and fun to read. Anime fan or not Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt did a great job with this book. If you feel your voice is your career tool check this book out.
