A Haunting Epic Romantic Adventure that left me speechless with it`s perfection... "The Spanish Rose" has everything i love in a Romance novel, its a Keeper that deserves more than Millions of stars. Its a long book with almost 500 pages, but trust me: it`s so worth it!
It has everything i could possible imagine in a Historical Romance. Shirlee Busbee is a Masterful writer in her own class..she creates the best flaming Romantic Tales- with addicting plot, interesting vendetta between two families, exotic locales, detailed battle fields, and the bravery of one woman who will have to let go of her Delgato pride, to accept the undying love of her handsome Tigerish captor...this is a book i could not put down for one second.!
Set in the middle of 1600s it must have been a very barbaric time with the war between englishmen and spaniards hovering over the seas-the famous feud between the english Lancasters and the spanish Delgatos that started many generations ago when Francisco Delgato kidnapped the beautiful Faith Lancaster and made her a unwilling mistress. Their brothers had killed each other to the death, and even so when Francisco had married Faith- the war still went on between the two families, and the Lancastres never forgot the insult.Til the present the saphire blue Lancaster eyes the heroine Maria Delgato have inherited she rebels against her older brother who has become her guardian after her parents died. He wants to force marriage upon her and she wants none of that. Bravely she escapes on a ship to her beloved home Hispaniola. In another ship our hero, the emerald-eyed Gabriel Lancaster are on a ship with his young pregnant bride and sister full of dreams and hopes of the future. But a brutal attack to the ship causes Gabriel`s wife to die and with grief and rage he gets forced to surrender to Diego Delgato, Marias brother. The man whose father killed his father. His sister Caroline gets captured by Diegos cousin Ramon. Its then, that moment,he steps on their ship with chains around him that he sees Maria overboard over him. The vengance that always been on his blood ravages him to the core as he makes a vow to never again get defated by a Delgato, and that he would kill Diego. But little did both of them know, while they stared at each other...that they both would fall at their knees at the love so passionate,so consuming and painful..would make their love the greatest of all time!
Maria Delgato is a heavenly heroine i just came to adore! She was so stubborn and full of pride, and denied Gabriel of any affection towards her. She willed him to hate her and let the old vendetta become a barrier against both of them. But she could never resist him, and the love-scenes with the both of them are so FREAKING BLAZING SPICY! Yeah they were so hot in bed that it actually became a little traumatic for me to read it, Gabriel is a one of a hell sexy lover in bed AND out of it (smirk).Jeezuz how i envied Maria-and i NEVER do that! I just came to admire her spirited nature and every time she called Gabriel "Englishman" i just giggled, as she also called him "her Englishman" in her mind.
Gabriel Lancaster is a dream that every woman wish for herself. He is a noble man despite his attentions of being opposite towards Maria-and i just simply love him for it. He always reminded me of a restless Tiger in the way he fought against the enemy on battlefields. With a fearless smile on his face, his dark-wild hair, emerald eyes and the wicked silver earring on his one ear-he made one hell of a sexy imagination of a hero! Ever since he enslaved Maria, he never behaved toward her like she were a slave, he simply couldn`t...instead he worships her the first night they make love, he teases her, he adore her, being extremely possessive of her...while he hates himself for forgetting her to be a Delgato and falling irresistibly in love with her himself. He has never been in love with a woman before, not even his own wife who now is dead. But the bitter words of another woman who hurled words in his face are ones that always comes to his mind in the afterward of his fierce longing for Maria- that his hearless heart would one day fall in love with a woman, and that she would break his heart. Poor Garbriel..how it happens to him. His utter devotion and desire for his Maria..he longed for her heart, her love, and how as a reader i love it in the way he fought for it. Gabriel Lancaster has become one of my favourite heroes of all time, he was willing to give up everything, even his life for Maria to be safe. He was a pride, waggish, honourable and fearless man..who only comes to live and breath his love for Maria. He is a ferocious force of a byronic hero, a man whose feelings are so passionate that he could destroy everyone around him.
Pretty pirate book! It would gave been better without the romance. Both characters were in love with each other but 100 of pages being stubborn. ---got old.
Sweeping Saga from the Spanish Main and British Jamaica in the 17th Century
A sweeping saga from England to the Spanish Main and British Jamaica in the 17th century—it’s a great story. Set in the Caribbean in 1664-1668, this tells the story of two feuding families: the British Lancasters and the Spanish Delgatos.
A long time ago, the two families became enemies when a Delgato man took as his unwilling bride Faith Lancaster, steeling her away to Spain. The Lancasters exacted their vengeance, as did the Delgatos their retribution—and so the vendetta has continued.
Maria Delgato, raised on the island of Santo Domingo, has the Lancaster blue eyes her Spanish relations hate. Gabriel Lancaster, who owns land on Jamaica, immediately recognizes them. On his return from London, Maria’s cruel brother, Diego, seizes Gabriel’s ship. Diego’s attack results in the death of Gabriel’s young wife and the capture of his 16-year-old sister. Gabriel becomes a slave on Diego’s sugar plantation, where he is treated cruelly. But Gabriel escapes, and 4 years later is planning his vengeance with Maria in mind.
I loved the hero; Gabriel he is noble, generous, tender with those he loves—and constant.
If you like to be swept away to another time and place, this is one you will like. Busbee, a master of historical romance, has done a good job, starting with an interesting time in history, and adding to an intriguing plot, lots of action, suspense and a compelling hero. If you can be patient with the slower pace and at times a heroine that may annoy, you’ll find it a wonderful dip into the past.
Another excellent Busbee read ! I am getting excited about this author, I have 3 more of her books here to read ...it was a pain in the butt to read without cracking it open and breaking the the seam however 😜
Just finished this a short while ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the reviewers said it was very slow, and I do agree that there were times when I thought the hero & heroine would never find out how they felt about each other. However, given that the English nobility have always been great at hiding their emotions, and the heroine had not a great command of the English language, I can see where the author was probably spot on with her portrayal of these two characters. Really, it made it just that much more enjoyable when they did find out the truth...and the love scene at the house in town was incredible! All in all, I have to say I loved the book, and would recommend it to anyone who loves historical romance, and also enjoys a lengthy read.
This book was one of the first romance novels that I have ever read. It made me fall in love with the genre. It might not be good enough to today's standard, but in the 90's it was the most interesting romance novel I had ever read.
It was enjoyable but all the back and forth for so long and the being afraid to “show” their true feelings for so many pages got annoying after awhile. It could have been condensed by A LOT and been more enjoyable. Moreover, for a majority of the book Maria was a TWIT and her moods changed with the wind - too self-centered and immature.
I LOVE THIS BOOK. Every time i put it down I would think of what’s going to be happening next. Me and my boyfriend were breaking up and all I could think about was reading the next chapter of this book ( I know it’s terrible).
This is a well written story. Lots going on and the characters are interesting. I love when a book draws you into the adventure and this one drew me in easily. I highly recommend this as a fast read. Ms. Busbee is a very good author.
Bingeable, but more like cotton-candy fluff. This book had many great elements, but not a lot of substance. The adventure was scattered and the characters were pretty flat. They came to terms with their issues without much reason other than the editor told Shirlee to wrap it up. Also, I feel like she could have either developed the side romances better or just left them out as they came off as completely unnecessary filler. Ramon and Caroline would have been more of an interesting story since Ramon seemed to actually have more depth to him than was let on. It almost felt like Shirlee was setting them up to have their own story and never really wrote a parallel book about them. I want to hear more about their story since it seemed like there was a lot left unsaid, and he felt more likable than Gabriel.
I liked the hero, who from the very beginning was described as a decent aloha-male, which is seemingly a contradiction, as alphas tend to be high-handed, arrogant and contemptuous jerks.
This is not your typical bodice ripper, where the hero repeatedly rapes the heroine and the heroine stupidly and helplessly falls in love with her tormentor.
The heroine even wanted to force the hero to treat her badly, the way he was treated by her brother, but the hero showed her how different he was from her cruel brother.
This extremely well-researched and well-written full length novel provides a lot of bang for the buck about the swashbuckling high seas era of the 1600s when England and Spain fought for dominance. Pirates, privateers, and those representing their country brought Gabriel Lancaster and Maria Delgato together as revenge and dominance were sought between the families. In a love-hate relationship, slavery, kidnappings and plundering were the adventures of the days. For someone who loves history and high sea adventures, this lengthy novel is highly recommended.
It was a good read but for me the story was too long and certain parts seemed repetitive. Parts of the story seemed based on history which I wasn't really interested in. A historical romance involving pirates and the hate relationship between England and Spain. I started to hate the female character, she seemed to cause most of the issues with him. Overall, the storyline kept me entertained with plenty of action and romance. It's like an enemies to lovers romance with a HEA ending.
Love the swashbuckling, revenge driven books of yesteryear!
I have read Whirled Bushes for years. The same books again and again. They give you more than just a love story. They take you on an adventure while the hero and heroine fall in love against their will.
Great love story.Fighting to stay alive on the sea.Maria was the Spanish Rose in this story of pride and violence .Gabriel was English and Maria was Spanish enemies. It is a story about love and hate on the high sea
