Matriarchy & Corruption #2

Arrival: Gay Romance in a Post Apocalyptic Dystopian Society

Rate this book
A post-apocalyptic story of forbidden love. A gay romance in dystopian society. What if men and women lived in separate asexual communities? It is seven decades after the pandemic and the population is still teetering on the brink of extinction. Most people are infertile, and male babies are rare. Adult males are generally impotent and lethargic, a consequence of altered DNA. A minority of people still crave physical, sexual pleasure. The West Beach fertility unit doubles as a brothel for deviants, women who desire men. Alton and Paul are among the minority of men who are virile. The Matriarchal society doesn't work in the interests of all citizens. When Alton leaves his rural male community, he is shocked to discover he is expected to provide sexual services to wealthy women. He can't do it. He has someone special on his mind. Alton feels more than brotherly love for his lifelong friend. After five months apart they will be reunited but does Paul feel the same? Contains hot young men getting sexy together. All characters in the book are over 18. Speculative fiction meets M/M romance in a post-apocalyptic dystopian Matriarchy. Arrival is approx 41,000 words and is a standalone book. *** 2016 Rainbow Honorable Mention ***

***2016 has been a very unstable year. Not only have I lost favourite role models in droves, I have been into dark places more times than I could count. Yes, I experienced highlights as well but the darkness has had a big impact this year and the only way to keep it at bay was reading, mass reading, back to back books with no stopping and no reviewing. I do apologize to all the writers that I won’t be able to review their books yet but I will get to it. Promise!***

I feel like I wasted my time. There was absolutely no tension in the story. No stakes. And there was weak world building. It felt like a poor knock off of Twice Caught. There was just nothing driving the story. I kept reading, waiting for the big reveal or the conspiracy, or for the other shoe to drop. But nothing happened.

This was a fun read. I've downloaded both books, but I wanted to read this one first. I'm looking forward to the second one (well first one). In general this story was well paced and enjoyable. The author does a good job creating characters and giving them a unique voice. The main characters are of course perfect looking and sounding with no flaws, which is what people expect. Personally I would have liked to seen them each have at least one or two flaws, but I don't think it would have worked in this sort of story.

The story did have a few surprises which was really nice.

I liked the feel of this story, even though we are set in a future that isn't perfect, it's not dark and dirty and the people who inhabit the story aren't victims (well not in the way we've come to think of them).

I enjoyed the ending and I can see where this will play into the next book. What's nice here is that the story is a standalone and you don't have to read anymore, but I will.

The sex scenes are not over the top, and work in the contest of the story which is another plus.
