I received this book as an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for honest review.

I liked this story. I liked that it wasn't bogged down in a lot of unnecessary angst, and melancholy. There was a lightness to the characters, and the story telling. The gender issues were interesting, and given their due, and I appreciated that. I liked that it was about the three mean learning to know, and to trust each other. I liked that they were attempting to build a solid relationship together; one that wasn't based purely on biology, or destiny. A short story, but a well developed one. I'll be looking forward to reading more by this author.

4.5 stars for this M/M/M erotic shifter romance.

Brent is a frog shifter, and has been kicked out of his pack for not only shifting into a different sex, but also a different species. This was a big twist for me as a reader! Brent was initially Brenda, and born into a werewolf pack, but her first shift was into a frog, and when she took her human form again, she...was a he! Yikes! Brent's parents supported him until he was 18, but the pack shunned him when he became an adult. Brent had little choice but to shack up with his boyfriend, an abusive partner, for two years.

The story opens with Brent being cared for by a pair of frog shifters he met as a child. Corey and Shane are a bonded frog pair, and Brent is sure they are his fated mates. Brent travels far, through the winter snows, to meet Corey and Shane again and reveal his feelings. He's afraid to break their bond, however, and they are also tentative with him. It makes Brent feel as if he's the only one believing that they are mates.

This is a cute story, with little angst. Brent's nervous about his scars from his ex, and he's unable to really confess all his feelings, because he is scared they won't be reciprocated. The frog shifter idea was fresh to me, and fun. I loved how they would drop into the tub and swim together. It was sad when Brent made some rash decisions and found Shane as a heartbroken frog in the sink! *sigh*

There are some great sexytimes and a touch of BDSM--mostly spanking and a bit of Dom behavior from Corey. I really enjoyed it, and was glad that their relationship seemed to work out. There's a lot of sensuality here, and a genuine affection which develops.

I received a review copy via NetGalley.

Brent has nearly killed himself getting to where he is going, and when he gets there he has no clue what to expect. But anywhere is better than with his loser, abusive ex…and if that anywhere also happens to be where his mates are, then he is definitely going to take it.

Being a shifter who has found his mates really should be an easy answer to all his problems, but even Brent knows that being able to change into a frog isn’t going to make what he wants easy to attain. Corey and Shane have been in a relationship for over ten years–-suddenly having Brent show up on their doorstep claiming to be both their mates isn’t exactly going to make for smooth swimming. Trying to fit three into a pond previously only made for two is going to cause a lot of waves. Especially with all the baggage that Brent is bringing with him.

Not lying, that cover is pretty much why I read this book. Totally adorable. Just look at the little froggy…don’t you just want to like snuggle the fuck out of him? Do lie, you know you want to!

I have a bit of a weak spot for the more unusual shifter breeds. Everyone has done werewolves or werecats…give me a frog or a hedgehog any day. They are small, unique, and usually a lot to fun to read about. Granted, there is less of a chance for some sneaky knotting to be slipped into the story, but you can’t have everything.

There is quite a bit to love about this story other than the fact that I really enjoyed the type of shiters on display. One of them, which I totally didn’t expect, was the fact that Brent was once Brenda, but after their first shift she became a he. I make it sound all types of complicated, but I thought it was a really cool idea. Not exactly a trans character, but I really liked the idea that-–for Brent, Corey, and Shane, at least-–the change of gender was an easy, normal thing. And well, I must admit that I wouldn’t mind such an easy transition as this…even if it meant that I had to be a frog part of the time. Ah, fantasy. Got to love it.

The threesome aspect of this story was also really well written. I actually don’t care for books where the relationship difficulties brought to bear in poly relationships are glossed over with love and cuddles. Two-person relationships are damn hard…throwing in a third just brings all new, and old, types of complications. I liked that these guys didn’t get it right the first time. That each of the three people made mistakes, got hurt, and then figured their shit out. Yeah the sex was hot, but really it was the relationship that these three had that made me really like this book.

I had a lot of fun reading this and I really do recommended you pick it up if you are at all interested in shifter stories. The boys don’t spend a whole lot of time in their froggy skins, but what time the did was really cute. And when they had to deal with the more messy human things, they do it in style.

Trans polyamorous frog shifters for the win. This book was just what I needed the day I read it, charming, touching and funny, with a bit of angst. The characters communicate, there's explicit negotiation of consent and a lovely happy ending.

I thought this book was cute! This was the first time I have read about frog shifters and I honestly really liked that aspect of this book!
Okay this is were I go into how I am so picky when it comes to Ménages because for them to work for me it has to feel equal. Well I am not sure I got that feeling with this book and I will explain why. So some of this might be spoilers and I am not sure how to explain without telling why I felt a certain way over certain parts of this book.
Brent began his life as Brenda but when he went through his first shift he turned into a frog and a man. Which makes since because some species of frogs can change sex. Well he has always known that Shane and Corey were his mates who also happen to be frog shifters like him but a different kind then him. So the call of his mates drives him back to them and from the start a lot of discussion about Brent being a part of their couple which Shane and Corey were already mated before Brent joins them happen without Brent which I found odd. You would think it would evolve all three of them so I felt like in that aspect Brent was being left out. Also there was a rule were only Shane and Corey could have sex alone but Brent was not aloud to have sex with either man alone. That part really bugged me yes I know they need to grow as a ménage before they felt comfortable with that aspect of their relationship but then Shane and Corey should not have been able to do that without Brent either and I say this also because it seemed to happen a lot in this book were Shane and Cory would have sex without Brent. So yes that bugged me and made it harder for me to see them as a ménage and it working between the three of them. Other than that I did like the shifter parts of this book and the way they were together other than the parts that bugged me. So with this book you do get steam and some angst which the steam in this book was hot!

So all together I did like this book but there were parts that bugged me and left me unsure of how I felt about all three of them together..

3.4 stars?
I think I enjoyed it more while I was reading it than I did once I was finished. It was more interested in all the different ways three guys can have sex than going over any sort of background for this version of shifters. The mechanics of how someone born to one type of shifter (wolf) can reach the age of first shift (which also isn't defined btw) and then shift into a creature from a completely different class of animal is never explained. Honestly, that threw me even more than the transgender shift magic. Born to mammal parents and then shifting into an amphibian? Ummmm...hunh. Anyway...moving on to my next book!

Sharing a Pond, Alex Whitehall's debut novel with Less Than Three Press, is a wonderful story about a young man and the couple that he joins. All three of them are frog shifters, and we find out early on that our protagonist, Brent, turned from female to male during his first shapeshifting experience (not your usual sort of trans protagonist, but it works!).

This story has a handful of elements that aren't usually my thing: soul(mates), contemporary setting, and shapeshifters. However, the story still worked beautifully for me, which is a testament to Whitehall's writing and the strength of the characters. I really liked how the mates were handled; it was a key point of the story, but not one that was overplayed.

The fact that the characters are shifters plays a secondary role in the plot. Even though it wasn't the focus, I love the way it was woven in seamlessly, giving their lives and relationships another level of complexity. There are a few really sweet moments that brought a smile to my face, like the three of them in frog form playing together in the bathtub.

Sharing a Pond is definitely a relationship-driven story, which works since we can see into Brent's head and empathize with the very realistic challenges of entering an existing relationship. On occasion Brent seems a bit immature and melodramatic, but it's in-character and not played up to an annoying level. After all, he is 20 years old, coming out of an unhealthy family situation and abusive relationship, and has no experience with polyamory. I stayed emotionally invested in him throughout the story and I never found myself frustrated with his actions, even when I knew he was overreacting or communicating poorly.

Overall, Sharing a Pond is a lovely read, especially if you like triads, sweet relationships with a dash of angst, or unusual shifters. My only regret is that I bought the ebook instead of the paperback! I want to lend this to some of my friends. :)

Sharing a Pond is a bittersweet experience that really lingered after I finished reading it. Whitehall's book is about a frog shifter, Brent, who experienced an unexpected gender change when he shifted into his frog form at puberty. He was... dissuaded from staying with his largely wolf shifter family. Brent has tough break after tough break until he eventually decides to try and track down the two men he remembers from his childhood as his mates.

This story is absolutely adorable. It's really tender and it handles references to abuse and abandonment very respectfully while still driving home the hurt those events cause. Brent's transformation and the difficulties he experienced due to his gender changing were sad but he never lingered on that aspect of his past. In fact, he was very matter-of-fact about it, saying that he really felt like he found the body he was meant to have when the transformation happened. The depiction of Brent's reaction to triggers that remind him of the abuse was very realistic. Shane and Corey are a wonderful counterpoint to Brent's indecision without becoming stereotypes. Shane and Corey have distinct personalities, and I really appreciate that at no point did I have trouble distinguishing between any of the characters.

The only thing that stuck out as awkward to me was the inclusion of John and the negative reaction he had. It seemed to come a little out of the blue to be honest. I understand that there needed to be a catalyst or some sort of criticism for Brent to start doubting himself so severely, but honestly I wish we'd known more about John before he just reacted like that. It's not illogical that he would it just seems a little sudden within the realm of the story.

Other than that small criticism, I really loved this story!

From Magnolia Reviews: Four Petals

I received this book as an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I do recommend this book. It was a good read about a poly relationship. The romance did move too quickly, but I liked that after the immediate sex the characters worked to create a relationship based on communication and mutual understanding as well as sex. There were a number of things that needed to be explained better, including the part about Brent being transgender, and the book was missing a secondary plot line to help keep it from being monotonous, but overall it was good.

I know I rated this 3 stars when I read it, but since I didn't even remember reading it and don't remember anything about it, obviously it wasn't very memorable.

I was excited to read this when I realized it was about frog shifters. I have never read a book with the type of shiver before. If was ok for most of the book. Then the big controversy that almost broke them up was manufactured and so damn stupid. All they had to do was sit down and have an honest conversation. Something that should have happened earlier about several things anyway. Plus the cause was never really resolved.

Okay here are the spoilers that should have been discussed.

First when Brent told Corey and Shane they were his mates they should have told him they had known already. Why exactly did they not keep I touch if they knew this?

Second when Brent stumbled into the spanking scene that was when the conversation about BDSM should have happened.

Third Shane hating his job and wanting a new one should have sparked a conversation not an I have to leave to see them bull....

It was meh because while there were the beginnings of things I would have enjoyed the most important element was missing. When adding a third hard, honest conversations are a must.

I received one copy of this book at no charge in exchange for my honest review. Review first posted on Nautical Star Books

Brent has overcome quite a bit to find his mates. Shifting from female to male overnight, abandonment by his family, an abusive relationship, and a long journey have slowed him down but he has finally made it to his mates.

Corey and Shane have been together for 10 years and are in a committed relationship. When Brent shows up at their door they are a tad bit confused but willing to try and make things work. Adding a third to their relationship will be challenging but they are committed to bringing Brent into their lives.

Without giving away too much of the plot, let me just say that this was a wonderful change from a lot of the shifter stories I have read. Most shifters I read about are wolves or bears or some ‘alpha’ type species that is all MINE and TAKE and not alot of tenderness and thoughtfulness. Corey and Shane were sweet to Brent and they found a nice balance in their interactions with him that was somewhere between friend, lover and guardian.

Brent was incredibly insecure about coming between Corey and Shane and being a burden. He has nothing when he shows up on their doorstep and accepting their help is tough on him emotionally. He wants to be an equal but is also afraid that he will end up coming between the two already mated guys he cares for so much.

I will say that I think the relationship was a tad bit imbalanced, which happens a lot with M/M/M pairings. Corey and Shane seemed to be fine all by themselves. Adding Brent into the mix seemed to throw things off a bit. I felt bad for Brent that Corey and Shane were having sex without him around but he wasn’t allowed to be with either of them without the other present. Seemed a bit unfair.

I enjoyed their time spent in shifter form. There was something incredibly peaceful about a tiny frog sitting in the sink. And Shane’s reaction to the frog mating call was cute.

Overall, this was a nice read with just the right amount of heat and angst to move the story along. I think the relationship was a tad bit unbalanced but that was probably expected a bit with how young Brent was and his newness to the relationship. I enjoyed the book and will be looking for more frog shifter stories!

I dove into this story with excitement and little expectations. I was looking forward to a hopefully sweet and romantic shifter menage.

The story begins with Brent being rescued by Corey and Shane. He's brought into the couple's home after he lost consciousness out in a snow storm. Brent, young, lost and afraid Brent was quite endearing; a little whiny in my opinion but likable. I never got a good picture of Corey and Shane, to be honest. What did they even look like? huh.

And I found the way they so readily wanted, and literally dragged Brent into their little love nest right in the beginning of the story was just too much, too soon and had me kind of loose interest right then and there :(

Brent had been kicked out of his pack of wolf shifters, mostly because he turned out to be a frog instead. I understand he was a little lost and lonely and afraid to break Corey and Shane’s bond by crashing into their lives. He’s also not had a very pleasant past with his ex-lover, hence he was a little afraid of letting himself truly fall and hoping to be caught.

It’s really not a bad book, but I would have liked a more difficult start, more struggle, more drama or something. I don’t know, really. Overall, the story felt a little too light and without a lot of substance :(

While I can’t say I truly enjoyed the book, mostly because I never really connected with the characters, I hope you still want to check it out.

This book's description had me hooked. The book itself? Not so much. I was expecting lots of drama, because going into a relationship with a couple, that's been together for years? That's complicated, or should be. It didn't seem complicated to me here.

The sex happens really fast, there are little problems on how to handle the new relationship and... that's it. There isn't really a lot happening. If there would have been more show than tell, then maybe I would have liked the relationship/s.

I would have loved if the frog shifter thing (totally new for me by the way) would have received more attention. And maybe explanations, because the parents are wolf-shifters... wolf plus wolf equals sometimes frog? What?

2016 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Sharing a Pond by Alex Whitehall
As shifters go, this is a new one for me. Frogs? Some might cringe at the idea. I didn't mind it one bit. Different is good. Shall we call Brent, one of the shifters, a trans, since he shifted for the first time from a girl to a guy? This is a well-done romance, cute, with a lot of caring toward their third (Brent). This was beautifully done and the poly relationship was done tastefully and beautifully. Well done and would recommend it.

I love reading books with unique shifters. I just wish that Corey and Shane talked more with Brent in the beginning- they knew that . Communication was key that Corey and Shane should've been able to do, especially cause they are the older ones, dammit! But all in all a great read that I'll prob revisit in the future.

FROGS!
This book is a little different take on the shifter genre. Brent changes from female to male during his first shift and is forced to leave his pack of wolf shifters. He also shifts into a frog. I really did like the different take on this. The sex happened pretty quick but the relationship took time. Cute book!
