Fascinating, detailed, well-written account of Vipassana meditation by the author. Most of the book covers six months of intensive meditation by the author in the US, India, Sri Lanka and Myanmar; sitting in meditation camps organised by Robert Hover, S N Goenka, and Sayama Mya Thwin (all in the U Ba Khin lineage), and also in a forest hermitage in Sri Lanka, including a rare interview with the great Nyanaponika Thera. Also includes details of the author's interactions with Goenka, Hover, Sayama, U Chit Tin and U Tint Yee.
This book would be of huge interest to anyone who has attended a Vipassana retreat or has practiced Vipassana, or any other kind of intensive meditation, but perhaps not anyone else. I found it a page turner. There is a lot in the book about the author's "Dark Night" experiences (although that term was not in use when this book was written) and in general about the dissociative effects of extended meditation. I can't shake the feeling that many of the author's experiences were at least partly placebo-driven, but he did have a lot of fascinating experiences and has described them in great detail.
This book deserves to be widely known! I've only seen it mentioned in an Amazon review of Hover's book, and it was only available to borrow at Internet Archive so this was a lucky find.
