Dixie Lee brings home an alligator, a snake, and an owl as pets to protect her family from such spooky creatures as the churn-turners, the bogeyman, and the mist sisters
Marcia Vaughan became a librarian in 1975 so that she could inspire children to read. After a short while, she began writing her own books. Her first two stories were never published but her third, ‘Wombat Stew’, illustrated by Pamela Lofts, was published in 1984. It might now be considered a classic of Australian children’s literature.
This story followed a very charming format of setup, then delivery. I liked how at the end, all the spooks ended up being real, and the critters Dixie collected were able to save them. Very satisfying!
Charming creature spook story. I love that it's a little girl bringing all the critters home. The word choice is great; I can't help but read in a Southern accent and cadence.
A classic story set in the swamps of the South. Perfect to read aloud to youngsters (first, second, third grade) to give them a thrill. Warning: the pictures of the boogeyman are truly frightening. Beware!
