The Flophouse #3

Sean's Sunshine

Rate this book
As a young detective, Sean Kryzynski expected violence on the job, not to get stabbed coming back from lunch. Add an angsty bedside breakup, and by the time he gets home from the hospital, he’s over everything, including his irritating, hot-as-balls nurse, Billy No-Last-Name with the big, cynical brown eyes.

Billy’s whole porn-model flophouse is experiencing a wave of altruism and adulting—people getting real jobs and going to shrinks and doing good works. Billy opts in too—he wants to be a good guy—but his assignment is taking care of the world’s most exasperating, headstrong patient. At least bunking with Sean means Billy has his own spare bedroom and some peace and quiet to do classwork.

The porn model and the policeman seem to have no common ground, but Billy's experience herding his younger siblings helps him manage Sean with unexpected empathy—a skill Sean has been working on too, because he wants to be a good cop. Eventually they chip away at the walls around each other’s hearts and discover a real connection. If not for their incompatible day jobs and inconvenient pasts, they might even be falling in love….

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up.
When I started this book I had no idea it was sort of a spin off of two Amy Lane series (Fish out of water and Johnnies/The flophouse ) and I was getting annoyed by so many side characters’ interference- it’s one of the reasons I only gave 3.5 stars. But maaan, let me tell you, the main couple here is absolutely amazing. And how could you be surprised when it’s Amy Lane!! She writes some awesome characters, so layered and so freaking real , I could almost say I’ve met them some other time in my past.
Billy/Guillermo with his sad past and his snarky, loyal and fierce personality, I ADORED him!! And it was so freaking funny when he swore at the other MC half in English half in Spanish!

“But I don’t need them, you stupid fucking pendejo!”Billy yelled. “I need you!”

Now Sean…Sean was awesome . He was so loving, so supportive even though he was bothered by Billy’s job in porn . He reined it in and he kept supporting and encouraging Billy. Their bond is beautiful, their interactions were so wonderful to watch and everything felt so realistic and so well done . And all that without being cheesy or too syrupy. Amy Lane never disappoints.
It’s a shame that the book drags a bit here and there because of the presence of so many previous books side characters . And I think I could have doné without so many talks about bowel movements and diets and (untreated) eating disorders though I understand Amy wanted to paint us the exact and accurate picture of the hardships of porn star life .
I enjoyed very much this book and if you can get over the fact that it’s a spin off , the main couple is SO worth it.

PD . I need Randy’s book ASAP!!! And it better be a 🐕 in there for him!!!!

Amy Lane has long been one of my favorite M/M romance authors. I will buy almost sight unseen anything that bears her name and I trust her to deliver a really good story no matter which characters are featured. If you have never read any of her work, you should start with the Fish series. From then on characters appear with one another throughout the different series, but beginning with the Fish series will allow you to meet almost everyone. Her books are above all love stories. Love in all its guises.... love in all its genres. Billy is starting to get his life figured out, thanks to the good luck at finding the flophouse. It’s amazing how your life can change when someone actually cares about you and respects you no matter what you are or how you choose to support yourself. Billy has been asked by Sean's friends to care for him during his recovery for a lung injury after he was stabbed. Sean is doing his best, but the beautiful young man taking care of him is pushing way too many of his buttons for comfort. He needs to get better as quickly as possible. Billy and Sean are in the meantime, doing a complicated dance around each other. Their circumstances sometimes put them at odds, but they are definitely on a direct path leading to one another. This little universe that Amy Lane has created is very hard to resist. The characters are all so adorable, loveable, and human, warts and all. Do I think this is how most people involved in porn are treated? Diffidently not... but it would be great if a little compassion and understanding would take place. The characters are wonderfully complex. Sean’s upbringing influences his life as much as Billy’s does his. The story makes an interesting comparison between the two. They are taking two very different journeys through life, yet somehow end up in the same place when they need to be. Thank you, Amy Lane. Keep the books coming and I'll keep buying and reading.

This is another of Amy Lane's Fish-series-adjacent books. It's not bad: I generally go for the uber-frank communication between her MCs and a generous tolerance of flaws. It's just that I could do with a little more structure and differentiation between the books. Particularly when scenes from other Fish books are included in these adjacent books, but are just presented from a slightly different angle - there ain't nothing much new happening.

Just like book one, the plot was literally everywhere and confusing. Like the things that happened had no buildup and like one of bad guys wasn’t even mentioned again after they brought him down. Nothing was explained as to why he did what he did or who the other bad guy was or how they found him and honestly I was confused the entire book but finished it for Billy and Sean. That’s literally it.

4,5 stars .... I am obviously really lucky at the moment with my books ... although they are all much sweete4 than expected

This one was also a gem and I am sure, I will read it again.
The main focus of this book is the relationship of these two and their character development.
I loved that!!!!

I am so happy that I read it and really hope for the audiobook

I received an advance copy, in return for an honest review.

I am loving the Flophouse series, which overlaps with both the Fish series and Johnnies series. This book’s events are concurrent with Fish in a Barrel and Constantly Cotton.

Billy is a curmudgeonly 20-something who waits tables in addition to starring in porn scenes for Johnnies, while he works on completing his gen ed credits before transferring into an engineering program. Billy has his sights set on a real life already. Sean is a curmudgeonly homicide detective recovering from stab wounds, and in need of a temporary caregiver. Billy figures he’ll at least gain a quiet place to study – and a reliable bed of his own – for a few weeks. In the process of healing, solving a string of burglaries, and supporting one another, these two strong willed men find their perfect match in each other.

I highly recommend this book.

Something about this story really brought out the "Feels" for me. I loved Sean and Billy as nurse/patient and eventually as a couple. There was real growth for both. I'm a firm believer in the"family you choose"but love seeing restoration of blood families warts and all. Writing is never an issue with Amy Lane. I will continue to read series set in this world.

My effort to somewhat order these overlapping series from the same world are below.

Order (at a minimum) for Amy Lane's world including crossover characters from: Johnnie's, Fish Out of Water, Flophouse, and Racing the Sun SERIES.
As of July 2023

1st read,
Johnnie's #2 - "Dex in Blue" = Henry's brother & eventually helps run Jonnie's
First published September 30, 2012

2nd read,
Johnnie's #4 - Black John = Owner of Johnnie's & With Galen who hires Henry & later joins Ellery's start up law firm.
First published January 26, 2015

* (might want to read Johnnie's #5 which is Reg & Bobby's story they appear in multiple books in various series but are not as vital to the timeline as say Galen, Johnny, and Dex. Reg and Bobby make a great couple, plus Reg is not your typical m/c. Wonderful story)

3rd and 4th books that should probably be read,
Fish Out of Water (Fish) #1 & #2 = Ellery & Jackson are featured in nearly all the books in this world)
First published July 29, 2016 for book 1.
(FYI, I actually started at book#3 and was mostly fine. )

These next two could be flip flopped in order, but are the order I would have chosen if I had known what I know now before I had started down this "Rabbit Hole" of a world. Many of the timelines from Fish overlap with ones from other series; you get more details or other perspectives etc...
5th read,
Racing The Sun (Race) #1
(Sonny & Ace are featured prominently in upcoming Fish and Flop books)
First published April 25, 2013

6th read,
Flophouse (Flop) #1 Shades of Henry
(Henry and sometimes Lance are featured prominently in upcoming Fish and Flop books)
First published March 31, 2020

7th read,
Fish #3 A few Good Fish
First published August 28, 2018

8th read,
Only Official Crossover which is Fish#4 and Race#2 "Hiding the Moon"
(Burt and Ernie feature prominently...)
First published October 23, 2018

9th and 10th read,
Fish #5 and #6 = Fish on a Bicycle and School of Fish
#5 - First published October 15, 2019
#6 - First published December 15, 2020

11th and 12th read, (12 and 13 can be easily flip-flopped, but I wanted to know how Sean was doing after Fish book#6.)
Flop #2 and #3 = Constantly Cotton and Sean's Sunshine
#2 - First published April 5, 2022
#3 - First published March 7, 2023

13th read and final as of July 2023,
Fish#7 = Fish in a Barrel
First published July 26, 2022

Hooray, “K-Ski’s” story!

After finishing this book, I am still experiencing all the squishy feels that Amy Lane’s books give me. She has the capability to write a book about random everyday people that find each other, form a bond, and become a tight knit family. Some of Amy’s characters are family by blood, but most are family by choice. “Sean’s Sunshine” is another perfect example of people trying their very hardest to live a life, make ends meet, and be a beacon of good in their community.

I am so excited to read another Flophouse book. These young men are a bit broken, struggling with their own body issues, and trying their best to help each other. Billy volunteers to take care of the injured policeman, and ends up finding family in the process.

Sean Kryzynski is a cop who had black and white views of the world. The cops were the good guys, and the people who broke the law deserved to be in jail. He learned from Jackson that people had both good and bad in them, and the world isn’t always black and white. He found out this harsh reality the hard way by getting a knife to the lungs, and exposing the corrupt policemen he worked with.

On top of the journey that Sean and Billy take together, we get to see the events of the previous “Fish In a Barrel” book through their eyes. I was happy to revisit Dex and the Johnny boys. What truly stole my heart is how much page time another Flophouse resident named Randy gets. He is such a kind soul, and I hope he gets the best HEA Amy can write.

If you like hurt/comfort stories, books where the characters grow and change, and you shed more than a couple of tears along the way, this story is for you. Billy and Sean were perfectly written for each other. After finishing this story, I feel like I was given a warm hug on a sunny porch.

Do you know that feeling when you’ve read a really satisfying book and your heroes have got their HEA? But sometimes you just want to see a few slice of life things – domesticity and how they live together? Well Sean and Billy did this kinda backwards because to begin with we get the slice of life.

Recovering from a stab wound that almost cost him his life, Sean has been ‘assigned’ a nurse from none other than the Flophouse full of Johnnie’s boys and he’s really not sure how he feels about it. He appreciates the offer, but really, just how long is it going to take him to recover and what’s a porn star going to do to help him get around until he’s back on his feet?

This story is full of the frenetic insanity that always surrounds Ellery and Jackson from the Fish Out of Water series, but Sean and Billy are on the sidelines. They somehow wind up with a case of their own, that leads to some shenanigans in the dog park (seriously hilarious), as well as the normal gut-wrenching, angsty family stuff that Amy Lane is infamous for.

We get to see what Ellery, Jackson and their crew appear like from the outside – avenging angels of chaotic good come to mind – as well as catch up with some of the other guys from the Flophouse. But what I enjoyed the absolute most about this story was the love that grew between Billy and Sean – how they got to know each other in embarrassing and touching situations; how they moved around each other as they tried to navigate something that they could never really have expected to happen; and how the cop and the porn star fell in love.

This one had me in tears a couple of times (some of them happy, some of them sad), and there were no quick fixes for any of the things that went on. I really enjoyed the glimpses into the other series (this slots in with the other Flophouse books as it falls into the same timelines), and there was an appearance from Dex and Tango who are a couple of my favourites from the Johnnies books.

This was a real pleasure to read and when I finished the story, I gave a happy sigh because not only was it full of epic adventure, family, porn stars and our favourite Fish duo, but the slices of domesticity and happiness were so good for the soul.

An easy 5/5 from me and I really can’t wait to read further books in this series.

Heather's Notes
I liked this one more than 2 but still something is missing...and I still don't know what? Maybe they need more action?? Maybe it was because I had already read all the main series stories. I really don't know but I hope the author goes back to J&E. I seem to like those books more. Also I literally figure out who the thief, as soon as he was introduced. Seriously, it was so obvious.

I've been looking forward to Sean's story for a while. He was a guy that thought he knew how the world worked only to realize he needed to readjust his perception a bit. We've seen him grow and go from a decent cop to a great cop. Of course we wanted him to get a relationship of his own. Amy Lane has a few series that all sort of interconnect (though she does a good job of making it so you CAN read them as stand-a-lone, though I do recommend reading them all as you would miss out on how all the characters interconnect) and it is great seeing the others. Billy is from the Flophouse series which grew from the Johnnie's series. Sean is from the Fishiverse. It was wonderful to see Billy come take care of Sean when he was injured. I especially liked that they didn't meet and immediately click. Rather, they rubbed each other wrong initially and it was only once they each looked beneath the surface (and their own initial impressions) that they found how well they did fit together. I personally really enjoyed the journey. Billy especially grabbed my heart which was funny because I went into the book because of how much I liked Sean. Billy just stole the story. And, in keeping with the general theme all these books seem to have, everyone has their own path to walk. Accepting and understanding people can change everything. Read the book and read all the series. It is worth it.

I really enjoyed this story much more than i initially thought I would. Officer Sean K-ski, whom we know from the Fish Out of Water series of stories was injured in Fish in a Barrel and Billy from the Johnnies series was asked to provide nursing care for him in exchange for his own bed to sleep in. No more flophouse was a great inducement so Billy agreed, never knowing that he was about to start down a path that he never anticipated--the road to being reunited with his family, falling in love with a cop, and finally getting his own HEA.

There's a lot of overlap between these two series and the author does a great job backfilling and keeping readers up to date so you don't have to read both to enjoy this one. But it helps--very definitely. Needless to say, this left me with just the right amount of warm and fuzzy feelings and I'll gladly step back into this world if the author decides to add more in the future.

This book is the latest addition to the world that encompasses multiple series, including The Flophouse, Johnnies, and Fish Out of Water. I am a huge fan of this world, so I was excited to read about porn model Billy finding love with injured police detective Sean. I was not disappointed!
Billy is stoic, grumpy, and determined to keep Sean on the path to healing after the stabbing that almost killed him. Sean is at different points annoyed, bemused, and impressed by his temporary nurse. I appreciate every moment of these two interacting, opening up about painful pasts, showing vulnerability, and falling in love. They have such great conversations, along with lots of steamy chemistry.
The supporting cast is made up of characters I've come to love from prior novels. The timeline of this one runs alongside Constantly Cotton and Fish in a Barrel, and I recommend reading those for more details about people and events shown or mentioned here. This entire world is fascinating to me, and Sean and Billy's romance makes it even better. These men are generous, stubborn, and kind. They love dogs and their friends and each other. I love them!

This is the third book in the Flophouse series, but is part of the larger Fishverse, so there are appearances by some of my faves from the Fish and Johnnies books. This story focuses on Billy, who lives in the flophouse, and Sean, our favorite detective from the Fish series. Jackson volunteers Billy to stay with Sean while he recovers from an injury. I figured Sean's attitude in the Fish books was due to his interactions with Jackson, but no, turns out he is naturally a bit of a snarky jerk. And, so is Billy. Yet, somehow this story is so sweet. Billy has been undervalued his whole life, and it was so lovely to see him realize his worth and that he can be loved. I will say that if you haven't read the other books in this world, you may be a bit confused, because it runs parallel to events that happen in the other books, which get mentioned or factor into this story. I do wish more was gone into at the beginning of this book to refresh my memory about how Sean got injured, as it had been awhile since I read the prior book. Overall, a great addition to this series and I look forward to the next one.

I am loving this series, and this latest addition did not disappoint. I've been waiting for K-ski to get his HEA, and here it comes! It is strangely fitting that prim and proper Sean ends up with a flophouse guy, and the journey was all kinds of sweet and yet still entertaining. I love Sean and Billy together, and it was great to see their relationship blossom from caretaker/patient to friends and then finally to lovers. Their background stories and how they got there broke my heart (especially Billy's) even as I smiled and laughed, but the tears (both happy and sad) were worth it for the HEA at the end, of course.

I love that these series (Flophouse/Fish) run concurrent (these are NOT standalones) and the events both refresh my memory and take me back to happy places. Getting to visit (however briefly) with some of the guys from Johnnies was great, and of course. the added bonus-catching up with Jackson, Ellery. Man, if I could live in Amy's Fishverse, I would. Instead I have the next best thing - Fishverse adjacent. These books are why I love this author and her stories. Thank you, and next, please!

Three Stars... Definitely not my favorite of the series...

I have been enjoying this series. It runs concurrent with the "Fish" series & acts like a continuation of "Johnnies". Its great to read a check in here and there with the old gang from both and see what everyone is up too.

Cotton's book was an odd installment. It didn't add much to the overall series, I guess, because Cotton's character was really in a state of trauma. However, this book picks up the pace & is a worthwhile read.

Sean is still recovering. The stab wound isn't going away, impacting his life. Billy from the flophouse was called in as a nurse to help him out since his closeted boyfriend dumped him at the hospital. The book mostly revolves around Sean trying to get back on his feet but also allowing himself to be vulnerable with someone new. There is a slightly mystery of local larceny that needs solving, but with the small pool of suspects, its not hard. The twist was a bit of surprise.

I like this pairing and joyed the byplay. Its a decent read if you have read the others as it builds on what other books and series have started.

Sean Kryzynski is a cop, recently injured, and in need of some light nursing. His friends (hi Fish)think ex porn model, current student Billy would be perfect for the job. For his part Billy is thrilled to be out of the revolving flophouse the porn models, past and present use. For the most part this set up works out. Sean is stubborn and doesn’t accept help easily, but Billy is used to herding the reluctant ducklings, so it works.
This is another of Amy Lane’s spinoff series that is as engaging as the original series’. I love the cameos from Johnnies and the Fishiverse. The evolving romance is believable and entertaining, the characters are well fleshed out, the comedy is great. I can’t think of a thing I didn’t love in this book.
I’m an avowed Amy Lane-aholic and would be happy just reading her to do list, but this is another home run. I would recommend this book to everyone I know.
This is a lovely, lower angst book that is an easy read, and is difficult to put down.

We got an inkling of them in Constantly Cotton. I have been anticipating their book since Fish in a Barrel. This surprises me. I don't know why I am shocked at how much I enjoyed this book. I gobble up this book once I open it. This had a nice flow to it. I love how they came together, and I am always glad to see how the Johnnies universe might expand outside the studio. The romance slowly builds in the forefront with a splash of action/mystery. Good Vibes.

I always intend to read these slowly, and it never, ever works.

It was a treat to see scenes from the Fish Out of Water series in new perspectives. I have no idea how Any Lane does this but I am forever Here For It. But ALSO, Sean's and Billy's story is a delight in itself. The way the business has progressed, the way the cop is dealing with the bad in his profession versus his ongoing internal changes. while the porn star is doing similar with who he'd been and who he wants to be, is satisfying on a visceral level.

This novel ends at 88%, and then we are treated to a "Fishlet". And then another little thing that, omg so funny. Delightful.

So, yeah. Another in these multi-dimensional interconnected series of series that, in a few years, I'll re-read with fond delight. There's no better gift.

There is a really good, moving romance here drowned in lots of spending time with the HEAs of characters of many many many other Amy Lane romances - I have not read all of those, do not want to and had a hard time "wtf is this scene" (it probably ties to some other story). The last chapters of this book somehow suddently are about a totally different couple (about which she wrote I dunno how many books already, half a dozen maybe). Great for committed fans I guess, but not my cup of tea.

Incidentally, while being a woke cop is a theme here, and the dangers of a corrupt police, then somehow the good guys end up using precisely those same tactics, but in the name of "good" and that was a bit disturbing.

I recieved an advance copy of this book for review purposes.

Another fine flophouse novel!

Taking place concurrently to School of Fish and Constantly Cotton, this novel continues the Flophouse series' themes of not only finding your tribe, but also finding or reclaiming the parts of yourself that make up the grown up you want to be.

Because the flop house series entwines with the "fishiverse" there is also some mystery and action in the mix, so that stirs up the comfortable domesticity of a recovering cop and his pornstar nurse maid.

All in all, a sweet ride with some exciting bumps but overall great suspension!

I love the flophouse series and I have always been a fan of Sean, aka K-Ski.
So when this book came I was super excited.

And Amy Lane did not disappoint.

Billy and Sean were a delight to read about. Their courtship was full of everything you could want. A teeny bit of angst, a big dose of longing and lots and lots of laughter.

There were many cameos throughout the book from the FishiVerse but this book was pure romance between Sean and Billy. You could feel the affection radiating off of them as they danced toward each other.

I do believe this is my favourite Flophouse. I did read it many times after getting it.
Highly recommend!!

While I genuinely like Sean and Billy as characters, I found this book exhausting. You really need to read Fish in a Barrel before this as it runs parallel with that story and it’ll spoil parts of that book if you don’t.

I thought the dialogue was repetitive at times, and honestly, after so many books set with the porn actors, I didn’t need reminding of their preparations. I’m also kind of done with stupid heroic crap done by injured people.

The little mystery in this was somewhat pushed to the background behind mountains of dialogue (internal and external); I actually forgot they were solving that at one point. However, I had partially figured out the resolution of it and I did like the outcome.

Everything just felt so earnest and tragic and like everyone should be walking around on the verge of tears all the time.

I think this will be the last I read in this series as I just don’t care about any of the remaining damaged “Bambi eyed” flophouse guys.

Finally we got Sean's story or as Jackson affectionately calls him, K-Ski. I was not disappointed. It was everthing I needed. Sean's story was even more painful than I suspected. Family is not all what we need or expect. Billy's was in it's own way similiar to Sean's but instead beaten and kicked out. Sean and Billy, whose snark was strong, made a great couple as they slowly and sweetly fell in love. I loved all the glimpses of the Flophouse boys, Dex and Chase and Jackson, Ellery, Henry, Jai and Ernie. There was less physical drama which was a change I thoroughly enjoyed. Well done, Amy!

I've read all of this series (and related series) so far and while I enjoy them, there's something oddly puritanical running through them. I'm getting stuck on the queer tragedy aspect of them, alongside the judgements around porn, despite the author very clearly trying to be sex positive. Sex work is work and while there is certainly still stigma, does that stigma need to be internalized by the overwhelming majority of the characters? I'd like to see the character who's in porn because he likes it; he isn't putting himself through school, family hasn't brutally kicked him out, it's just another way to make money. No tragedy, just acceptance.

I loved Sean and Billy, I've been waiting for them to take center stage in their own book and I was so not disappointed. This was a fantastic spinoff/mashup of the Johnnies (Billy) and the Fish Out of Water (Sean) series. They were both self aware enough that they knew that they were works in progress and they were putting in the work to become the best version of themselves. Another wonderful addition to the series.

For the love of Pete. This is my throd time trying to write this review. Grrrrr. This book is phenomenal. I love the Fish boys so much and I was really wondering where this was going to go with Sean. He's changed so so much since the beginning and sees that he needed to and still does. But he helps Billy see things and change in ways too. It's just a great story. Heart wrenching but great. And of course, getting to see Jai made it even better!

just another repeat book

Disappointed again. I actually purchased this book but struggled to get through it. It was so predictable. And if you read Amy Lane’s other related books, she incorporated those stories into this story. So I felt like I was rereading two previous books while trying to get through this one. Ugh, why bother if you can’t tell a new fresh story. Same old same old theme.

Four and a half stars

SEAN’S SUNSHINE is the third in Amy Lane’s Flophouse series, but stands alone well (I picked it up without having read the prior two in the series, and enjoyed it immensely on its own.)

Officer Sean Kryzynski finds himself recovering from a stab wound, and to that end, with a nurse, Billy. Naturally these two butt heads, but fall into a friendship that allows them the space to explore more.

Awesome

Book 3 of the Flophouse series. This is Sean and Billy's story. I loved how it starts with Billy helping Sean after being stabbed and is in recovery, Billy has a no nonsense attitued and tries to make sure Sean doesn't over do it. Their story is a wonderful journey.

I do wish Amy had wrote where Sean and Billy adopted the 2 dogs they talked about :P
