Improbable Cause

What happens to innocent people when they are mistakenly targeted by law enforcement? Does the law look hard enough to find the right suspects or are they prone to just looking for quick and easy answers? Then, do they just look for the easy targets? What questions do they ask? Which ones do they miss? And what happens to those they pursue who are totally innocent victims? Does the term ‘probable cause’ mean anything anymore. Is it really that difficult to build a case against the accused? Or is it all about process and resolving cases? And what part does the Media play? Have they become the de facto arm of government that convicts these people before they've even had a chance to defend themselves? What chance do these innocent victims have of ever being heard and escaping an unjust end?
If it can happen to them, could it happen to anybody? Could it happen to you?
The story of the Hammond family and its ordeal is fiction, but I could have just as easily written about any number or real cases. Instead, I preferred to write about this one, where I could control the outcome, unlike real life.
