So you want to go to Paris? You’ve countless picture books, google mapped the Champs Elysees with the little yellow guy, imagined yourself on the Eiffel Tower, gazed at innumerable pictures of Notre Dame, Point Neuf and Montmartre etc and now you are beginning to dream Paris. Oh, to just get there and start walking through the streets. Well this book is for you. Paris Secrets - Architecture, Interiors, Quartiers and Corners. I love the structure of this book and the photographs, of course, are sublime. McCulloch explains: “The fabric of Paris is made up of many different threads - sign, facades, street scenes, architecture, boutiques, boulevards parks, gardens and even courtyards. And, just as in a tapestry, each if them is intricately liked to the next in subtle and often imperceptible ways. A row of cream stone buildings may be unified by a lacework of Parisian-black, wrought iron balustrades, while an enclave of stores may be amalgamated by a series of beautifully fine black-and-what signs.” To reinforce this the author has broken up each section into enticing sub sections. Under Architecture there is - the architecture of rooftops, the architecture of streetlights, the architecture of the islands - to name a few. Under Interiors some of the sub sections are - a sense of classic Paris, a sense of sophistication, a sense of whimsy and a sense of understatement. In the final section Quartiers and Corners the full list is - quiet spaces and places, gardens, grand and small, tables to sit and think, side streets to get lost in, corners to discover and lastly places out of town. Favourite chapters are - the architecture of doors, the architecture of courtyards, a sense of sophistication and quiet spaces and places. Here’s the push you need to book your ticket whilst I, green with envy, tell myself in the not too distant future.
I looked for a book like this for a long time and finally found it. It’s not perfect but it has a really great balance of information and beautiful photos.
