Ever since she was young, Kiki Howell has loved to listen to a well-woven tale with real characters, inspired plots, and delightful resolutions. Kiki could spend hours lost in a book, and soon she knew that creating lives, loves, and losses with just words had to be the greatest thing that she could do. To that end, she pursued her study of literature and writing, earning a bachelor’s degree in English from Kent State University.
“After a long break having my boys, I finally just had to write again. And, as soon as I gave the stories the space, they entered it. It’s both awesome and humbling to find the words in my mind become characters on a page and create their lives.”
Kiki is a multi-published author residing in Northeast Ohio with her incredibly handsome and talented, singer/songwriter husband and two children.

I consider myself a lucky person because I won Kiki Howell's book, Rituals, in a giveaway she had recently. I did not know much about it, except for a vague notion that it had something to do with witches, but like many of the books I read, I quickly skimmed the blurb and did not read an excerpt. Suffice it to say, this is not a book about witches. Instead, it is an emotional journey between two old friends , Maddie and Ryan who find each other after many years apart during which time Maddie was married to an abusive man.

The book begins with Ryan conducting a Wiccan cord-cutting ceremony for Maddie as a way to help her move on from the sexual and emotional abuse perpetrated by her ex husband. This is the type of ritual that I might be involved in if I was a practicing Wiccan. Nothing paranormal about it and later, certain Wiccan principles are discussed as a way to work through difficult life events that are firmly grounded in the here and now.

Maggie had never seen Ryan as anything other than a good friend and had been blind to what other people saw as his unrequited crush on her while they were growing up. The true magic happens when Maddie tells Ryan that she is seeing him in a completely different way thanks to the ceremony and then he is able to tell her how he has felt about her for all of those years. Maddie, now free of feeling like a victim, boldly owns her sexuality and comes on to Ryan in a very compelling way.

Let me not leave out the fact that Ms. Howell knows how to write incredibly hot "tie me up, tie me down" sex scenes between a couple that share each other's love of creative rope-play that will have you squirming in your seat, especially if you also share their brand of kink. I felt like Ms. Howell understood what really happens between a couple who love this way, as opposed to the multitude of writers out there who have no idea how to write BDSM in any form, be it hard-core or not. For those who are not used to it, I would not consider the BDSM elements as hard-core as compared with books that take place in sex clubs or even "play parties." The range of emotions that are shared between Maddie and Ryan were truly beautiful to read.

Along those lines, this was a surprisingly emotional read for me. After Ryan and Maddie spend a wonderful week together, the emotional stakes are raised by the appearance of Maddie's ex. Again, I will not go into detail here, but the way the narrative was written portrayed Ryan's fear and blazing anger so well, that I felt like I was in his head and body experiencing his emotions. During this part of the story, I found myself near tears and rooting for Maddie and Ryan to work things through the best way they knew how - through intense physical intimacy, as well as the kind of honesty I would only dream to be able to verbalize to the person that I considered my soul-mate.

Maddie has found, Ryan, her closest friend from childhood through social networking on the web, after her bitter divorce from her abusive ex husband. Ryan then helps her release her bind, and the terrible memories through a Wiccan ritual cutting all ties to the man she left and his abusive ways.

Feeling freed, and grateful Maddie and Ryan learn to create their own rituals. Creative in their endeavors as they emotionally and sexually explore both of their new found freedoms, that is until Maddie's controlling ex-husband tries to force himself back into her life.

Ryan has loved Maddie his entire life. He's always been her rock, and would do anything and everything to keep her safe and make her his. He knows that she feels the same way and is willing to be patient with her, but when her pshyco ex comes back to force himself on her, Ryan saves the day.

Kiki Howell's Rituals is an intriguing story that hooks you almost immediately. The chemistry between Ryan and Maddie is sizzling and the bonding scenes are scorching. I love how karma comes back to bite her ex-husband in the butt, and a little justice is served in the end. I'd definitely recommend this hot short read.
