The story is told in bits and pieces from the interviews Popoff conducted throughout the years with band members and others involved.

It doesn’t bring anything new, but it’s a nice recollection of various moments along Metallica’s journey from when they were formed until 2015.

There is a complete list of their albums, the creative part behind them, some inside key moments, from early times with Mustaine, death of Cliff Burton and coopting Trujillo after Newsted fled the band. There are also a lot of pictures with band members, posters, concert tickets and lots of T-shirts from various private collections - they all brought back the memories of the Big 4 I saw at Sonisphere in 2010.

Here are some pictures I liked from the book. How young and wild they were :)

Wiadomo, to najważniejsze.

Personal Response: Metallica: The Complete Illustrated History by Martin Popoff does a splendid job at telling the story of Metallica. Even though this book is a great read, it suffers from the author's decision to insert his opinions about the band wherever he pleases. Another critique I have about this book is the poor transitions between the analysis of specific albums and the overall biography. Although this book has some pretty obvious flaws, I did learned plenty about Metallica's rich history.

Plot Summary: Metallica: The Complete Illustrated History begins with the creation of Metallica in late 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Popoff then goes into great detail about the very first studio recordings of the band and even Dave Mustaine's release. The novel later tells of the recording process of Metallica's sophomore album Ride The Lightning and the touring that they did after it's release. Shortly after Popoff's analysis of Ride The Lightning, he describes the critical acclaim of Master of Puppets, and also mentions the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton. The band's so-called "CNN years" are later in the book and lead into Metallica's controversial Load era in the 90's. Later in the novel, the infamous Napster controversy, departure of bassist Jason Newsted, and even the St. Anger recording process are explained in great detail. The novel concludes with a description about Metallica's Death Magnetic, but I was disappointed that Hardwired... to Self Destruct was not touched upon.

Recommendations: I would recommend this book to anyone who is a hardcore Metallica fan or anyone who enjoys learning about the history of metal music. I would not recommend this book to anyone under the age of 12 due to the strong language that is used throughout the book. If you enjoyed Metallica: The Complete Illustrated history, I would suggest that you watch the documentary Some Kind of Monster. The documentary is mentioned throughout the book and is a good way to learn exactly what went on during the recording of the abysmal St. Anger.

This was good, but not great. A very brief history of the band's albums, up until Death Magnetic.

This book has tons of rare pictures and artwork to satisfy the most hardcore Metallica fan. It is a good coffee table book about the band. However, if you want insightful stories and more than the Cliff Notes (no pun intended) story of Metallica's rise to fame, this book isn't it. But really, unless you aren't very bright the title sort of implies that already.

The book is boring and not very insightful. Also it contains mistakes about band history and releases. It has some cool photos and looks nice on a shelve but other than that I would not recommend it.

A quick read. A good overview of the Metallica story. Not as in-depth as most of Popoff's books, but it probably met my interest level in a book on Metallica.

Cute. But far from complete. A funny past time to see how lame they looked the designer rockstars that brought the sharing world to its knees.

Unique book on the world's best metal band. Fans will love the photos and the T-shirt pics.
