Anyone looking to think through the epistolary form in novels will be decently guided. The book is replete with references to French novels, including quotes in French without translation. To some this may be an immense wealth of detail and evidence, to others it may be a burden and annoyance.
I realise that as an eighteenth-centuryist, I really should know French. Yet it's quite annoying not to have any translations whatsoever for any of the quotes that Altman uses. On the whole, I enjoyed her analyses, so I suppose I shouldn't be complaining too much.
