At times gossipy in a fun way, at times overly detailed in its account of long-ago games (one of which I was at!). The author does an especially good job in his portraits of Joe DiMaggio and Reggie Jackson. One huge surprise: he quotes a racist rant by Thurman Munson during a mound meeting after Jackson misplayed a fly ball against the Red Sox. This was when Billy Martin replaced Jackson in right field in the middle of the inning and they had a shouting match in the dugout on national TV. (I was watching.)
