After having pillaged a Christian Monastery in Great Britain, Erik and Svend, two young Vikings, return towards Finland.During the trip, they stop off at a port where Erik meets an old drunk who talks about a mysterious land called “Markland”.He speaks about having seen it just before being shipwrecked. He returns home poor, and never managed to buy another ship to go back and search for it.Erik listens to him with great interest. The old man, seeing in Erik the same driving spirit of adventure that he had possessed when he had been younger, decides to give Erik the map for the route to Markland, wishing him to be the first to touch that unexplored land.
