I am not sure why the other two reviews are so very low because this book is actually quite encouraging and weightier than much of the Christian books that make the rounds. I have heard Dr. Ulmer minister in person on several occasions and participated in seminars where he was the teaching professor. Reading this book was similar to hearing a sermon from him—although, the reader cannot fully grasp the depth and passion from which he speaks with except in person. I suspect this book was taken from a sermon series on the topic because of the style: personal and folksy, as he can preach that way and in other settings, he can deliver quite formally, depending on the setting, as a highly educated and learned person. In the book, just as in person, Ulmer exegetes the Word of God and then delivers with clarity.
Whether this was a “Ghost writer” transcribing his sermons—or from his hand completely, it was Ulmer.
The message is solid—God sees us not as we see ourselves and He wants us to have a heart for what his heart desires. That is the basic theme yet the book goes much more in depth.
I did not do the book justice in reading it having drawn out the time reading in snippets when waiting for 5 or 10 minutes somewhere. I will probably pick it up again and actually considering a Bible study based on this.
This is a good read for any Christian but would be especially helpful for one that is backsliding, depressed, discouraged, and generally struggling.
