Yazawa started her comics career in 1985. She specialises in shojo manga (girls' comics). Most of her works have been serialised in the magazines 'Ribon', 'Cookie' and 'Zipper'.
Yazawa's stories focus on young, often rebellious women and their relationships. The characters are always very stylish, and Yazawa herself is known for her sense of fashion. (She even attended a fashion school for some time after high school.)
Among her most famous manga are Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (I'm No Angel, 1992–1995), Neighborhood Story (1995-1998), Paradise Kiss (1999-2004), and Nana (2000-2009), the latter awarded a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2003. Some of these works have been adapted into anime and live action movies.

4⭐️. Tenshi nanka janai (There's no such thing as an angel) is an early work of Ai Yazawa, the creator of the manga hits Nana and Paradise Kiss. Tenshi nanka janai is a funny and romantic high school drama. The characters in Tenshi nanka janai are relatable and realistic, just like in Nana and Paradise Kiss. However, Tenshi nanka janai does not have very explicit scenes which are present in Paradise Kiss and very frequent in Nana. The second volume introduces some relationship intrigues within the student council and people in their lives.
In the previous volume Midori found a birthday present in Akira's backpack that was intended for a Hiroko. Initially Midori was worried that it meant that Akira already had a girlfriend or that Akira is in love with a girl named Hiroko. Later on, Midori finds out that Akira has a younger sister with the name of Hiroko. Midori becomes very happy and relieved!
During the Christmas break, both Midori and Akira get each other Christmas presents and have their first kiss. Midori's feelings for Akira seems to be mutual! Midori also gives Akira a heart-shaped chocolate cake for valentine's day.
Things changes during spring term. Midori learns that Akira's younger sister soon will have birthday, meaning that the present she found in Akira's backpack was intended for another Hiroko! Midori has suspicions that the other Hiroko may be their art teacher. Midori has some troubles with her sleep after that, unsure how to deal with her feelings and suspicions and how she shall confront Akira and the teacher Hiroko about that.
The student council arranges a welcome reception for the new students arriving to the school. Midori writes a play for the council to act for the new students. The act is inspired by Snow White and includes a kissing scene between Shūichi and Yuko (because Midori is sure they have feelings for each other and just want to help her friends out). It turns out that Shūichi actually already has a girlfriend, the new student named Harada Shino. After the play Harada is angry that Shūichi did not mention the kissing scene with Yuko and asks him to not talk to Yuko anymore!
In the last chapter, Midori and Akira are on a date at an amusement park. They share some hilarious and romantic moments until they end up alone on a Ferris wheel. Midori has suspicions that the other Hiroko may be their art teacher, which Akira confirms. He had met her during middle school when things were a bit more messy in his life. He has avoided the teacher Hiroko and not Midori when she has been with the art teacher. Akira says that he has ended his friendship with teacher Hiroko. Later on Midori and Akira have their second kiss!<3

-A review for the whole series-
Miss Yazawa has done it again. I've praised her works so many times that it's getting repetitive. There's so much to love about this series and the characters. Ai Yazawa does a splendid job in capturing human nature and our tendencies as human beings. I feel that this series ranks up in my top two of Yazawa's series (Paradise Kiss being the first). The feelings and emotions of the characters are raw, and just so real that you can't help but want to jump into the pages and be with them.
Yazawa is a true master storyteller and artist. Although it's an early work (1990s I'm guessing), her prominent, funky, and unique style begins to take hold in her drawings. Always the fashion fanatic, the character designs are wonderful. I wonder what else she has up her sleeve. Time can only tell bit for now, I wish for Ai Yazawa recover soon!
