Tatuaggio maori.

Chissà se la ghiotta e preziosa valigetta dell’indimenticabile Paul Osborne riuscirebbe a placare la febbre di Caryl Ferey…
Ferey che inizia i suoi romanzi in progressione, costruendo personaggi e intrecci più che apprezzabili, e poi all’incirca verso la metà vira verso il grand guignol, di solito mancando il bersaglio (non lo splatter, quello è sempre assicurato).

E invece questa volta è tutto giustificato, spiegato, motivato, si segue il crescendo, si cade dentro, si diventa partecipi, Paul Osborne diventa amico e personaggio che non si vuole più abbandonare.

E che dire dell’altro meraviglioso protagonista?
No, non tanto i magnifici maori e meticci che abitano queste pagine, con i loro tatuaggi da esposizione: ma la Nuova Zelanda, l’isola del nord, quel mare, quegli alberi e quegli uccelli, sembra di conoscerli da sempre – oltre il fatto che sia un paese quasi ai nostri antipodi, con la forma di stivale rovesciato, e Auckland sta dove potrebbe stare Ragusa, se avesse la spiaggia – oltre, Ferey ce li descrive in cinemascope.

Έξω από τις περιττολογίες, ο Caryl Ferey είναι ένας συγγραφέας που θα ήθελε να μοιάζει με τον James Ellroy. Γι' αυτό και οι ιστορίες του έχουν τσακισμένους ήρωες, κοινωνικά στοιχεία και πολλές δόσεις φρίκης. Αυτό που τον διαφοροποιεί από τον μέντορα του είναι ο εθνολογικός χαρακτήρας των βιβλίων του, που λίγα από αυτά εκτυλίσσονται σε ευρωπαϊκό φόντο. Αυτό που αρέσει στον Ferey είναι η κουλτούρα των χαμένων πολιτισμών, ο ξεπεσμός τον ιθαγενών μετά τον "εξευγενισμό" τους και η λύτρωση του λευκού γι' αυτόν, μέσα ίσως από την εκδίκηση του ιθανενούς.
"Ούτου" σημαίνει εκδίκηση, όμως δεν μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε εξαρχής ποιανού η εκδίκηση είναι ακριβώς. Ανεξάρτητη συνέχεια του "Χάκα", το "Ούτου" κλείνει τον κύκλο της Σάγκα Μαορί και, μαζί, μια φρικιαστική επίσκεψη στην σκληρή κουλτούρα των Μαορί. Η ιστορία του βιβλίου δεν αγγίζει τα επίπεδα έκπληξης του προηγούμενου του, όμως αυτό δεν μας εμποδίζει να χαρούμε μια σκληρή (και ίσως επική) αστυνομική ιστορία που θα προσφέρει μια πληρότητα στο χάος μερικών εξηγήσεων του "Χάκα". Γι' αυτό και θα πρότεινα, εντελώς ανορθόδοξα, όσους θέλουν να ασχοληθούν με την Σάγκα Μαορί να αρχίσουν ανάποδα ή, ακόμα πιο πειραματικά, να προχωράνε και τα δύο βιβλία ταυτόχρονα. Αιτετικό, ξέρω, αλλά σίγουρα θα μιλούσαμε για ένα ακόμα μεγαλύτερο έπος.
Η γλώσσα του Ferey αποζημιώνει και εξελίσσεται, ενώ οι χαρακτήρες του είναι αρκετά ενδιαφέροντες για να θες να τους συνοδεύσεις και αρκετά σκληροί για να κρατάς αποστάσεις. Ούτε εδώ βλέπουμε από μηχανείς θεούς, σε ένα φινάλε ταιριαστό σε σημεία με το "Χάκα", λιγότερο σοκαριστικό αλλά σχεδόν τέλειο μέσα από την συνοχή και την ειρωνεία της τραγικότητας του.
Το "Ούτου" είναι ένα αστυνομικό για όλους, και αυτούς που απαιτούν δράση και αυτούς που βλέπουν πέρα από το περιτύλιγμα. Ακόμα και αν είναι εκρηκτικό και σχεδόν συνωμοσιολογικό, μιλάμε για μια μοναδική σπουδή πάνω στην Νέα Ζηλανδία και την έννοια του τραύματος, μαζί με την εκδίκηση. Τολμήστε το και δεν θα απογοητευθείτε!

Βιβλίο με δυνατή πλοκή και έντονους χαρακτήρες. Επικρατεί ένα έντονο "μπλέξιμο" στη δομή της ιστορίας, είναι αρκετά πυκνογραμμένο, αλλά μάλλον αυτό είναι απόρροια του στοιχείου που κυριαρχεί στο κείμενο και έχει να κάνει με τα ταξίδια του συγγραφέα στην περιοχή ή και την επιθυμία του να γίνουν κατανοητά στον αναγνώστη τόσες πιθανόν άγνωστες πληροφορίες σχετικές με τη χώρα που εκτυλίσσεται.
Σε κάθε περίπτωση είναι καλογραμμένο και σε κρατά σε αγωνία. Αρκετές οι αναφορές στα θρησκευτικά, κοινωνικά, εθνικά στοιχεία της χώρας, με ορολογία που ξενίζει, αλλά όσο κυλούν οι σελίδες γίνεται κατανοητή κάθε λέξη, όσο "ξένη" κι αν φαντάζει. Αυτά, όμως, δίνουν και το χρώμα στις σελίδες και στην ιστορία.
Αν αφεθείς, θα ταξιδέψεις μαζί του.
Και ο κεντρικός μας ήρωας, είναι σχεδόν μπροστά μας κάθε φορά που ανοίγει το στόμα του.

Μετά το καταπληκτικό Μαπούτσε και το αρκετά καλό Χάκα, ήρθε η στιγμή του Ούτου και η....απογοήτευση!
Το Ούτου είναι το δεύτερο βιβλίο της Σαγκα Μαορί και απλά απογοητεύει! Ακολουθεί το ίδιο μοτίβο με το Χάκα που είναι και το πρώτο μέρος της άτυπης αυτής διλογίας, με έναν ολοκληρωτικά κατεστραμμένο ήρωα, βουτηγμένο στα ναρκωτικά, βίαιο, κολλημένο με μια γυναίκα που την είχε ερωτευτεί στην εφηβεία του, που τριγυρνάει συνέχεια μαστουρωμένος, και ρίχνοντας ξύλο προσπαθεί να ενώσει τα κομμάτια υποθέσεων που φαινομενικά δεν έχουν καμία σύνδεση μεταξύ τους! Ένα βιβλίο σκοτεινό και βίαιο, που σκοπό έχει απλά να σοκάρει τον αναγνώστη με την άσκοπη βία.
Στα θετικά του βιβλίου η γραφή του συγγραφέα και οι πληροφορίες για την
μακραίωνη διαμάχη των ιθαγενών Μαορί της Νέας Ζηλανδίας και των λευκών αποίκων.

Utu is not a cozy, sugar-coated read, Férey weaves such a compelling web of stories that I could not put this book down. Utu transported me to New Zealand with such reality, I twice missed my subway stop when reading it on the treain.

I am impressed by Férey's writings on Maori culture and his observations of post-colonialism in New Zealand. Characters are framed as symbolic extensions of the past, where the past, history and conflict define the course of present-day interactions between characters.

I thought Zulu was excellent, and Utu did not disappoint.

A vile central character, huge amounts of often gore drenched violence and sexual violence in buckets, ensure that this is not going to suit every reader. However if you can get through this then you are in for a real treat.
The writing is harsh and brutal but deeply compelling and often quite beautiful. The capture of conflict within Maori culture is fascinating and well drawn, this is one that will draw you into it's hideous crime fest and keep you reading.
The only annoying thing about it is that this is book two in Ferey's Maori series, and book one is only available in French or Greek. Sadly I don't read either so will have to hang on in hope that someone translates the first book for me.

Une étoile parce que zéro n’existe pas sur Goodreads…

Haka (premier volume du dyptique Maori) m’avait déjà posé quelques problèmes, sans qu’ils ne m’empêchent de le terminer pour autant. Avec Utu, c’est différent.

En résumé, après nous avoir vaguement exposé les enjeux, l’idée est de nous faire suivre les pérégrinations ultraviolentes d’un (ex ?) flic alcoolique et drogué, qui après une centaine de pages a, entre autres exploits, passé une nuit de débauche décrite avec force détail avec une inconnue et a violé la femme de son nouveau collègue après les avoir fait boire et drogués.

Je passe mon tour pour la suite de ces horreurs, merci mais non merci.

Howard Curtis translated this World Noir Europa Editions. He also translated Ferey’s Zulu, which I plan to read soon. I read Ferey’s Mapuche recently by a different translator. I kept getting the sense that the story was much better than what I was reading. Curtis’s translation bears out this thought. Reading books in translation is tricky, but I’ve found that I do enough of it that I can spot a poor effort. There only seems to be three Ferey novels in English translation. He is a prolific writer, so I wish more of his works were available. I guess I could try to hone back my high school French.

I've never given only 2 stars to a book; my "excuse" for finishing this was that I've very much liked Ferey's two previous books translated into English AND I was traveling and needed something to read. The story and the author's knowledge of Maori culture is outstanding. But the endless gratuitous violence and sexual assaults were far beyond what was needed or interesting or helpful in getting the story moving. Way beyond!

οταν οι ήρωες χρησιμοποιουν κατα κόρον ουσιες και μαλιστα συνιθιζεται απο πολλους συγγραφεις, δεν μπορω να το καταλαβω.... τι επιδιωκουν?? να μας πεισουν να γινουμε ολοι εθισμενοι?? θα διαβαζουμε βουλωμενα γραμματα?? θα βαζουμε τους κακους στη φυλακη?? θα ειμαστε ηρωες?? να παρουμε λοιπον??

What a very fine novel this was. Watched a flick on the week-end with Orlando Bloom and Forest Whitticar called "Zulu" and it was delightfull. When the credits rolled decided to see who was the author. Cartl Ferry. Went to my library to find the novel and read it. Found this gem and it did not disappoint. If cop mystery is your thing, pick it up. Great read. Later. Keep reading!

I wanted to like this book, but it turns out it’s the second in a series, but the only one translated into English. Even though the first book is provided in back story, it was not enough to keep my attention and the main character, a detective, was flawed in predictable ways. The translation is adequate.

J'ai adoré Utu alors que Haka ne m'avait vraiment pas plu malgré une écriture magnifique et inventive. Utu est un polar beaucoup plus abouti, les personnages sont réellement attachants et consistants, l'intrigue est solide et sophistiquée.
Je me suis quand même dit que Férey est le seul auteur qui tue davantage de personnages que George R. R. Martin !

Ο υπαστυνόμος Όσμπορν, δεν "γαμεί και δέρνει" απλώς, πυροβολεί στο ψαχνό μάρτυρες, ή ανθρώπους που θέλει να τους αποπάσει πληροφορίες, σκοτώνει, ακρωτηριάζει, γενικώς... "χτυπάει το κακό στη ρίζα" και παράλληλα ρίχνει στο κορμί του αδιάκριτα ό,τι πρέζα κυκλοφορεί, νόμιμη και παράνομη. Φυσικά, το "βιβλίο με τους κανόνες" το χρησιμοποεί για χαρτί υγείας και... τέλος πάντων, πήρατε μια εικόνα.

Σε ένα ενδιαφέρον σκηνικό στους αντίποδες, στη Νέα Ζηλανδία για την ακρίβεια, τελετουργικοί φόνοι, περίεργες δολοφονίες, αφαιρέσεις μηριαίων οστών από πτώματα και ανεξιχνίαστες αυτοκτονίες επαναφέρουν στην ενεργό δράση τον Όσμπορν, ο οποίος με τη λεπτότητα και το τακτ ταύρου που έχει ρουφήξει δύο κοντέινερ κοκαϊνη, αρχίζει τις έρευνες, πηδάει ό,τι κινείται, δέρνει, σακατεύει, καθαρίζει, λευκαίνει απολυμαίνει.

Τα διάφορα πέπλα παραπλάνησης πέφτουν σιγά σιγά, η σαπίλα του τζετ σετ εκτίθεται, το παρελθόν του Όσμπορν έρχεται να του κάνει high five, στο πρόσωπο, με σιδερένια καρέκλα και γενικώς τα πράγματα ξεφεύγουν. Φυσικά ο Όσμπορν δε μασάει, ούτε με με σπασμένη μύτη, ούτε δαρμένος, ούτε... τι να λέμε, γενικώς δε μασάει. Πηδάει μοντέλα και συνεργάτιδες, γυναίκες συνεργατών του τις οποίες... ΓΚΑΣΤΡΩΝΕΙ ΕΚΔΙΚΗΤΙΚΑ και γενικώς το ζει.

Όσο πλησιάζουμε προς το τέλος, η βία κορυφώνεται, οι φρικαλεότητες αυξάνονται, τα κομμένα κεφάλια πολλαπλασιάζονται και μια υπόθεση που ξεκίνησε από κλοπή ενός τσεκουριού κειμηλιακής φύσεως αποδεικνύεται ότι όχι μόνο κρύβει πολύ περισσότερα από πίσω της, αλλά ενώνει και δύο διαφορετικές υποθέσεις. Και ο Όσμπορν με ορμή και αναστολές αμαξοστοιχίας με το λεβιέ της ταχύτητας κολλημένο στο "full speed" και σπασμένα φρένα, οδεύει προς το φινάλε γεμίζοντας τον κόσμο με αίματα και παρακολουθώντας κι άλλους να κάνουν το ίδιο.

Δεύτερο σερί βιβλίο του Férey όπου
1. Η νεαρή ερωτεύεται τον ώριμο
2. Κάποιος άντρας σοδομίζεται περίεργα ή βίαια
(αν τα συναντήσω και σε τρίτο βιβλίο, σημαίνει ότι έχουμε μοτίβο και βίτσιο)

Γενικώς είναι κρίμα, γιατί η έκθεση ωμοτήτων σε τέτοια έκταση στερεί από το βιβλίο την πραγματικά άγρια ομορφιά που θα μπορούσε να έχει, οι δε περιγραφές των σεξουαλικών σκηνών περισσότερο δημιουργούν προβληματισμούς για το συγγραφέα, παρά συμβάλλουν στην πλοκή, την εξέλιξη των χαρακτήρων ή στην ανάδειξη του ίδιου του έργου. Κάποιες ανατροπές είναι αναμενόμενες, κάποιες είναι ΟΚ, αλλά κυριαρχεί -παρά την ωμότητα και τη βία- μια σεναριακή αφέλεια. Και δεν ξέρω αν μου ξέφυγε κάτι, αλλά ποτέ δε μάθαμε τι ήταν αυτό που έκανε τον Φιτζέραλντ να αυτοκτονήσει. Μπορεί να το είπε ο Férey και να μην το άκουσα ΓΙΑΤΙ ΚΑΠΟΙΟΣ ΠΥΡΟΒΟΛΟΥΣΕ ΔΙΑΡΚΩΣ ΔΙΠΛΑ ΣΤΟ ΑΥΤΙ ΜΟΥ.

Γενικός βαθμός χαρακτηρισμός: Ενδιαφέρουσα λαογραφρίκη (δικός μου νεολογισμός, "λαογραφική φρίκη") που με λίγο καλύτερη διαχείρηση θα μπορούσε να έχει παράξει ένα πολύ όμορφο βιβλίο. Κάπου ανάμεσα στα χυμένα μυαλά, τα κατασπαραγμένα από καρχαρίες δηλητηριασμένα πτώματα, τα πολλά χύσια (ό,τι διαβάσατε), τα κομμένα κεφάλια και έναν μπάτσο που τρέχει πάνω-κάτω τρελαμένος από τα ντρόγκια, χάθηκε λίγο το παιχνίδι.

C’est le premier ivre que j’ai lu de cet auteur et putain j’ai adoré!

Déja, ce qu’il faut savoir c’est que le livre fait partie d’une trilogie, Utu en est le second tome et peut se lire indépendamment des autres livres. Le style de cet auteur est brut, direct, violent mais garde un côté attirant de part l’intrigue mais aussi de son choix des endroits, cultures et pays souvent méconnus ou boudés par les auteurs.

Utu veut dire vengeance en Maori, et ce livre rend justice à ce mot. Il est question de vengeance d’un peuple et d’un homme. L’effet de surprise est là et surtout, quand on s’y attend le moins. Avec le bonus du antihéros.

J’aime beaucoup le fait que ce livre donne une importance majeure aux faits politiques de la région et que l’auteur ait pris le temps de détailler la situation historique de la Nouvelle-Zélande ainsi que de l’Australie. On est complétement happé dans l’histoire du peuple Maori, leur rites et codes de conduite. Il n y a pas de filtre dans Utu, ca se voit et ca se sent!

L’histoire tient en haleine tout au long de la lecture et est superbement rédigé. La trame est bien ficelée et le storytelling est maîtrisé. J’aime bien le fait que les personnages soit définis selon leur vie passé/antérieur et qu’il y ait un focus sur l’impact que le passé a sur le présent. Il est intéressant de voir comment les démons du passé et problèmes non résolues empirent jusqu’à devenir un poids sur la conscience et sur les relations.

Ce que j’admire le plus chez Caryl Férey, c’est qu’il fait une immersion totale dans le pays sur lequel il écrit et prend le temps de connaître sa société, son histoire et ses règles. Il s’intéresse aussi à la politique du pays et son histoire complexe avec les différents protagonistes. Cela rend ses écrits plus puissants et leur donne un aspect documentaire. Il est indéniable que Caryl Férey connait le sujet et fait ses recherches.
Dans Utu, l’auteur prend le temps de décrire en détail les paysages et situations, et on se retrouve facilement transporté en Nouvelle-Zélande. Il est facile de visualiser ces forêts, peuples et océans. Franchement, ce livre m’a donné envie de planifier un voyage en Australie et chez les kiwis pour découvrir leur histoire et assister à un Haka et au rite de tatouage Maori 😀

Je tiens quand même à vous prévenir que c’est un polar et donc il y a des insultes, des mots crus et des scènes violentes. Comme ça vous êtes prévenus 😀 C’est pas fait pour les sensibles! Même le personnage principale ne suscite aucune sympathie ni tendres sentiments, il est exécrable à souhait!

Je vous conseille de lire « Utu » car vous n’allez pas le regretter. Perso j’ai acheté presque tous les livres de cet auteur 😀

Ferey, grand voyageur

Punto di forza dei polizieschi di Caryl Férey, definito “Grand Voyageur” nel suo profilo biografico, è l’ambientazione, curatissima sia nella descrizione dei luoghi per lo più esotici in cui ci trasportano le sue storie, sia per l’approfondita conoscenza delle popolazioni, delle usanze, delle tensioni sociali e razziali che le caratterizzano. Questo si nota bene in “Zulu”, thriller sudafricano che è la sua opera più nota, in questo “Utu” a location neozelandese e (immagino, perché ancora non l’ho letto) nell’Argentina del suo ultimo romanzo, “Mapuche”.

In Nuova Zelanda Férey ci ha pure vissuto ed è quindi particolarmente a proprio agio nel trasferire sulle pagine del romanzo questa terra di forti contrasti, tesa fra l’avveniristica skyline di Auckland e la persistenza negli anfratti della città e nelle isole più lontane, di antichi riti maori, con corredo di canti di guerra, tatuaggi feroci e cruenti cerimoniali.

Rispetto all’eccellente “Zulu” la trama poliziesca di Utu non appare però altrettanto originale e a tratti è come se la suggestiva ambientazione si presentasse un po’ come un guscio vuoto in cui è inserita una storia tutto sommato convenzionale, con l’annosa conflittualità innescata dalla civiltà dei bianchi rapaci, impegnati come sempre a trasformare in opere cementificate e remunerative lo stupendo e immacolato spettacolo della natura ed i luoghi sacri alla popolazione indigena in essa conservati per secoli.

Vi è poi l’altrettanto sfruttata alternanza fra il piano temporale presente dell’indagine e le reminiscenze del passato del protagonista, un violento e tossicomane poliziotto bianco incline alle frequentazioni e agli amori con ragazze meticce.

In conclusione, se la trama fosse collocata ad esempio a Los Angeles, si tratterebbe dell’ennesimo poliziesco simile a tanti altri: l’ambientazione neozelandese gli conferisce senza dubbio una patina di originalità e di interesse etnografico ma non è sufficiente a sostenere interamente il romanzo.

Utu means “revenge” in the Maori language and revenge is certainly at the crux of this police procedural by French novelist Caryl Férey. When disgraced New Zealand detective Paul Osborne—self medicating on booze and drugs in Sydney, Australia—learns that Jack Fitzgerald, his only friend in the Auckland force, has committed suicide in the middle of an investigation involving the Maori community, he agrees to return home to pick up where his friend left off. A specialist in Maori culture, Osborne does not believe that Fitzgerald killed himself and once established in Auckland sets out to prove it, doing whatever it takes. Osborne has fixations other than Fitzgerald and getting high, one of which is Hana, a Maori girl he grew up next door to whom he savagely betrayed when she failed to return his affections and whom, as the investigation proceeds, he fears has been drawn into a militant Maori sect. The story is complex and involves official corruption, mass graves, drug use, sado-masochistic sex, grisly Maori ritual killing, and a great deal of brutality, mostly on the part of Osborne. This is a problem because Férey wants us to sympathize with Osborne on his quest to prove Fitzgerald’s death was no suicide, to save Hana, and to get to the bottom of a mystery that as we turn the pages claims an astounding number of lives. And yet he makes his hero not just a compulsive boozer and drug addict but also something of a sociopath who hurts others unrepentantly and uses them to achieve questionable ends without giving much thought to what happens to them. This, along with the unremitting violence that fills page after page of this long narrative, finally has a deadening effect on the reader, who might very well continue turning pages, but not because of any twinges of compassion for a protagonist whose bad behaviour in the end has made him loathsome.

I just can't rate this book. It is gratuitously violent, and stretches credibility to the breaking point. There is a detailed description of a drug fueled, pan-sexual sadistic orgy at a swingers' club, and a variety of graphic killing and mutilation scenes. For starters. Yet bits of the writing are very strong and the Maori stuff is interesting.

Paul Osborne, the Auckland police lieutenant protagonist, ingests so much alcohol and so many substances, and has so many people trying to do him serious bodily harm that he should have been dead by page 27. He has left the force but is called back to investigate loose ends left by the suicide of his former partner. What he stumbles (literally) into is a convoluted tangle of political corruption, financial chicanery and bloodthirsty native revenge. And then there is his past - his obsession with the damaged Maori girl he fell in love with as a boy, and her part in the current case.

"His mind full of foreboding, Osborne drove to New Lynn. The painkillers had alleviated his migraine but he wasn't feeling any better. He had woken up in a room literally torn to pieces, with the cat sliced up in the bathtub, blood on his clothes, and a bullet missing from the cylinder of his .38, the girl he had spent the night with had just been found murdered near a disused sawmill on the other side of town, and there were about six hours he couldn't account for."

Utu est un livre étonnant - à prendre au sens premier du terme : il n'est pas extraordinaire, il est surprenant.

L'auteur mise, de prime abord, sur l'exotisme : les détectives de l'histoire tombent les chapeaux mous et les impers pour les lunettes de soleil et les maillots de bain, puisque l'intrigue se déroule en Nouvelle Zélande.
L'un des anciens collègues de Paul Osborne, flic maudit, vient le récupérer alors qu'il vomit tout son saoul sur les plages australiennes : son ancien ami et collègue, Fitzgerald, s'est suicidé après avoir découvert les meurtres violents d'un chaman maori. Ne pouvant croire au suicide de son ami, Osborne retourne en Nouvelle Zélande et tache de comprendre ce qui a poussé Fitzgerald au suicide, tout en tentant de retrouver la trace de son ancien amour, Hanna.

Voilà, en gros, c'est tout ce que je peux résumer de l'intrigue en moins d'une quinzaine de pages. Cela dit, c'est aussi ce qu'il se passe dans le premier chapitre, et ce qui est résumé sur le quatrième de couverture.

Utu ressemble à une grosse pelote de laine noire. L'ambiance et la texture sont là : les clichés du polar, la langue savoureuse, parfois jusqu'à l'exagération, avec une pointe de ridicule. Mais il y a un vrai, un beau jeu avec les clichés.
Ensuite, les fils de l'intrigue sont si nombreux, si mélangés, si tirés par les cheveux parfois, que j'étais quand même plutôt contente de venir à bout du pavé.

what a repulsive main character. which is not always a bad thing--sometimes i like them better for not being beautiful, rich, super-zippy in the IQ department, and always on the correct moral side. but for all that to work, they have to be right somewhere in their twisted hearts.

i don't know, maybe this guy is. i didn't finish the book. i got to a line in which the main character is musing on the inadequacy of a woman's breasts, and i gave up.

so, what, should she have apologized? said, i'm so sorry, i failed to grow enough boobs just for your aesthetic pleasure. no matter that she might be funny, or kind, or super-zippy--no, she's just dismissed for not having enough boobs.

in real life i wouldn't hang out for 10 seconds with a guy like that. so why should i spend hours on mr. protagonist's various and sundry psychological torments (and there are a lot of them) when he's gonna be a jerk about a woman's boobs?

i picked up this book because i really like learning something, all fictionally, about other cultures. the maori and their history are fascinating. but in this case i have to wade through altogether too many stupid things to get to anything good.

I read about a third of this, which was enough to know it was not worth finishing. I thought I would like it since I find Maori culture and New Zealand fascinating. The main character here, an irredeemable, hard-boiled ass of a detective named Osborne is supposed to be an expert on native culture, working on solving a complicated mystery involving a serial killer and the Maori. However, through the first 160 pages, plot is thin on the ground here, and what minimal threads of it exist are not well sewn together. An idea here or there, interspersed with ample description of the nihilistic protagonist's alcoholic rages and rampages, and then some improbable drug-fueled and unsexy sex -- that's about as far as I got. This isn't so much a mystery as random, unsavory events in loose sequential proximity. Maybe it would have turned out all right, but I have neither the patience or the inclination to risk finding out.
